So just head to MS store, get a SB2 15" and try it for a month. If X1E's fan issue (alternating between dead silent and jet engine) is fixed, consider to get back to X1E?
I think your expectations are a bit unrealistic. I'm not trying to sound harsh, but as @Queen6 laptops are a compromise. Take gaming laptops, they're probably the most powerful, but at the expense of heat, and battery life. Another example is Macs, where apple generally chooses to not spin the fans, so they're run rather hot.

I prefer 15" laptop but others love 13"

Check out bestbuy they offer lenovo products, and also Microsoft. I've owned Surface products and they're good in some ways, but I feel they're very expensive. I prefer a better value for my $$

By all means visit the store and try them out, but don't sweat the small stuff

Bestbuy in Canada don’t have high end Thinkpad in showroom. They only sell cheap ones. Same as Costco. I guess stores in the US have more models.

From my limited experience no. You "burnt your bridges" by setting up unrealistic parameters for a notebook with flawed priorities. Options are simple now turn up 1st day empty handed or settle for what works and meets the requirement of the employment. I assure you as a contractor to multiple major multinationals the latter is far more preferable...

I have multiple systems for various reason and they all pay for themselves on a daily basis, as there's no one single shot solution outside of ones own initiative...

US Best Buy and Costco stores only carry the X1 Carbon in store I believe, but they should be able to order other models.

Too little, too late, nor on you....

Went to MS store. When asked about warranty for SB2, they said no repair but they will exchange for refrubrished one. Not my cup of tea.
[doublepost=1551548151][/doublepost]I am not allowed to tell due to NDA but something will happen next week.

You mentioned yourself you don't need a high end laptop since you built yourself a powerful desktop. If Bestbuy doesn't have what you need, I'm sure you can get something from the MS store.

You want to work, or you want to go home? All Surface devices fall under this category nor do I care for it or like it. Like as not you'll have no issue, MS works hard in QC. My own 1st Gen Surface Book was and remains to be 100% solid and reliable.

You can turn up empty handed Monday proclaiming some mythical beast, or you can get down with the rest of us and simply buy what works...

I love booting my GL703GS as it's paying for itself by the second, It's literally putting my kid's through private education. Anyone thinking Mac's are expensive is in for a rude awakening I assure you in comparison :p:p:p

Stop talking and act, deal with it, like as not it wont be an issue...

I don’t know who is telling you that, but I have talked to a couple of stores as well as Microsoft themselves a couple of times and they all said the same thing, while that used to be their old policy, it is no longer the case. They now have machines that are manufactured solely for the purpose of exchange and all refurbished machines are sold through their refurbished site.

You went to the MS Store and they made you sign an NDA? :)

I remember what you told us before. That is why I asked them again. They told me that they don't repair machines. They will give refrubrished ones. I cannot understand this. Don't they have to repair broken ones in order to refurbrished the machines?

NDA is not related to MS but...

Again, not sure who told you that, but guessing someone at your local store and not from the horses (Microsoft's) mouth.

Refurbished units end up here

BTW, even if they did replace with refurbished, what kind of "condition" would you consider a MacBook Pro to be if Apple replaces the top case, say in year 3? Used/rebuilt? A probably lesser condition than refurbished by that age? If an iPhone or iPad fails, what does it get replaced with?

Your going to purchase, or you going to start day one with excuses and empty hands. Stop rationalising and pull the trigger, it's not that important.

You've boxed yourself in over trivia, simple as that. Silent 4K is meaningless in comparison to making a living with the appropriate hardware. My i3 on the go 2in1 plays 4K seamlessly in total silence as it's passively cooled, equally I don't expect Hex core performance coupled to a ball busting GPU. My primary is a beast, bettering many a desktop, and no I don't expect it to be silent in operation under full load.

Now your stuck with what you can get locally, personally I'd survive, bigger question is will you...

Just went to Lenovo site, for Onsite Warranty, if it is 3 years, I can add an additional Accidental Damage Protection. However, when I chose 4 years Onsite, that Accidential Protection option disappeared. Which option is better? Now 3-year and 4-year Onsite cost the same.

Asked two Lenovo chat agents. They have no idea!

That will depend on how good or bad the contracted on-site tech company is as to whether or not on-site is your best bet. The one near me is absolute crap, so the onsite isn't worth much. But for you, it might be a better deal.

If I recall correctly, last year people mentioned that in Canada, actually technicans from IBM Canada went to their places to fix their computers. Not sure if this is in general.

It is hard to say. They contract regionally, so it can be hit or miss. Someone 20 miles from me may fall into a different contractors zone and get exemplary service.

It’s one of those hit and miss things and only as good or bad as your regional contractor.

My Yoga C930 arrived. So far I like it more than the X1E and X1 Yoga Gen 3. Don't know why during setup the fans were noiser than the other two but after setup, it is silent so far. The 4K screen and soundbar are excellent! Max brightness is good but I wish it could be brighter especially when I use it under the sun later on. Perhaps I should settle on this and install a 970 EVO Plus 2TB later.

You never know with setup, even updates. Ran one on my MBP a couple days ago, Beta 4 of Mojave. During the setup process temps where in the 90's and fans running constantly, then it booted up and temps in the 40's. I wouldn't sweat it about setup/update fan noise, it is never an indication of regular use/temps.

Sounds like an ideal machine other than one small "niggle" of the screen brightness, but every machine is going to be a compromise of things you love and things you don't. You just need to decide which compromises you can most live with. If you aren't a frequent outdoor user, the screen brightness is not likely to be an issue in the majority of use cases :)

Unlike the X1E, no fingerprint magnet nor palmrest magent. I hope the paint won't wear off in the long term.

Although some people like the X1E keyboard, I prefer the keyboard of the Yoga C930. Of course much much better than the MBP's butterfly keyboards.

I could see the contents of the X1Y3 WQHD screen clearly under bright sunshine.

Probably just a matter of care with the paint, but possibly a paint sealer would help? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Lenovo found that my Yoga C930 requires repairing with a possible faulty touch screen. Since it was within the return period, I just returned it. Now, I am back to giving X1E another chance or waiting for the X1E Gen 2. Any other good laptop that has the following specs:

- 1.8kg or below
- 14-15" screen with 4K resolutions.
- about 7 hours battery life
- fast charge
- 350-400 nits screen (300 nits 4K screen on C930 is OK for normal use but not under sunlight. The WQHD screen of X1Y3 is 500 nits. It is a bit overkill even under sunlight. So I guess somewhere around 350-400 nits may be sufficiently good)
- quiet for basic productivity work
- Based on experience with the C930, i7-8550U is OK for normal Office and Youtube use but slow for even basic Photoshop work. So I need something faster.
- ideally with dGPU but if the machine could be quiet without dGPU, I would consider that.
- has built-in HDMI port. Connection via USB-HDMI adapter may be a possible issue of unstable connection with external TV/projectors.

Note:

Based on experience with X1Y3 and C930, letters on a 14" 4K screen are sufficiently comfortable to use as long as scaling is about 225-250%.

I compared the 1.1kg X1C6 of my friend with my 1.4kg Yoga C930, I could not tell the difference in weight. However, I could tell the difference between 1.8 and 1.9kg. The 15" SB2 and MBP feel very heavy compared with 13" SB2 and 1.8kg X1E.

- The color and paint of the C930 is beautiful. No fingerprint magnet at all. Same for the X1Y3.

I'm sorry if you're not and I'm just remembering things incorrectly, but haven't you returned and gone through about six or seven different laptops in the past year or two?

No. Tired only three Windows laptops and one MBP.
