Just watched The Marvels and had much the same reaction to it as I did to Captain Marvel.

It wasn't mind-blowing, life-changing, Oscar-winning or a masterclass in film-making because, you know, that's not what it was meant to be. It was, however, fun, engaging, entertaining and a decent way to spend a couple of hours. Could've hit harder in some places and had a bit better flow or depth in others, but overall, I enjoyed it.

Iman Vellani was a highlight. I really love her enthusiasm and heart in the role and think she's great as Ms. Marvel. Looking forward to seeing the Young Avengers come together. Again, not expecting it will alter the course of Earth history and bring us closer to a utopic enlightenment, but I'm sure it'll be entertaining and probably underrated, much like how Captain Marvel and this one was... probably 'cause it's central characters have girl germs, or something.

I really like Captain Marvel, but am prepping myself to be disappointed in the Marvels. Fingers crossed I’m wrong. :)

Seen a few as of late, but I watched this tonight as it's on Disney Plus and you know what, I thought it would be rubbish woke nonsense going by reviews etc, but I thoroughly enjoyed it! One of the best Marvel films I've seen in ages. And I would love to see an X Men mash up. The way they did that fight scene in the beginning with them switching around was superb!

Does anybody have any thoughts on the new Calamity Jane? It is worth my time, or should I just re-read some old Heinlein novels?

The last CJ film I saw had Doris Day in it, and I have some doubts as to its historical accuracy.

What network? One of the best Calamity Jane portrayals I’ve seen was in Dead Wood (HBO).

How The West Was Won (1962)- From IMDB: A family saga covering several decades of Westward expansion in the 19th century, including the Gold Rush, the Civil War, and the building of the railroads.

This was a big film in my youth. It’s majestic, the camera perspective makes it bigger than life, incredible scenary, all star cast, and it showed me how music can powerfully set an emotional tone. It makes no apologies, but as far as it goes, it treats the Native Americans fairly, includes a good illustration as to why they had a reason to be hostile as their lands were overrun by Europeans. Includes an impressive Buffalo stampede that they direct at the railroad. It amazes me that 150 years, 3 generations before I was born the West was mostly wilderness as far as settlers were concerned.

I agree Iman has a real sparkle about her and infectious smile. She's great in the role.

I liked it, it had some good funny moments... "let the kitties eat you."

Plus, two of my favorite actors, Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson.

I thought the Marvels was okay. My cheif criticism is the fight fight scenes were even more repetitive than the fight scenes from other superhero movies. And in an attempt to make a shorter, more reasonably length movie, the non-fighting scenes (which was lots of fun) were minimized to maintain the same amount of fighting choreography

To be fair, its hard to come up with new fight scenes, after the million of them we've already seen over the years. Though I liked the one move, where Carol threw the guy upwards, through the roof.

Said as a huge fan of Captain Marvel: The Marvels disappointed me, did not finish it, did not like the story premise or its gimmick. :( There is a level of writing, coherence and intrigue in Captain Marvel that is absent in this sequel.

Ready Player One (2018)- SciFi. A grim future where many people spend a lot of time in the largest virtual reality game world. There is a contest in this game world, created by the desceased owner, the ultimate game which if won, will award ownership of this trillion dollar enterprise to whoever can find the clues and accomplish the goals. It’s average citizen players against an evil corporate owner.

I give it a solid “C” because the story execution at times was somewhere between messy and convenient, some of the sequences seemed too slick to me, and the CGI action was too animated in appearance and cluttered*, although I appreciated the nods to popular cinematic franchises and there is a race early in the story I could get into.

* For a good comparison, watch Alita, Battle Angel if you want to see a recent pinacle of portraying a cluttered virtual urban environment, incorporating CGI, while keeping everything crisp. That is a super, although unfinished story, hoping for the needed sequel. 🤔
