Better than the average Tom Cruise vehicle; Technically well done, story is meh & fails to engage. The supporting actors do the heavy lifting while Cruise is on autopilot being there just for the paycheck...

As much as I like & enjoy the SciFi genre Oblivion is not a film I'll revisit as it's fundamentally boring & predictable in nature...

Q-6
Maybe I am just dumb, but I never saw the plot twist coming.

Interstellar (2014)-
“We weren’t meant to save the Earth, we were meant to leave it.” The Earth is dieing in the near future, plan A and B to find a place to live. Epic, emotional, plot drama, and several paradoxes! Director Nolan strived to keep principles of space travel realistic, with the help of a theoretical worm hole and black hole, at least theoretical as far as how we guess we might interact with them.

I'm going to give it another shot...
Said as an observation, I’m the first to admit that Tom Cruise plays mostly Tom Cruise, and that is true for this movie, he is in his comfortable action mode. Despite the hate frequently leveled at him, there is a nitch for action stars, and besides that, he has several good movies, not in the action genre, like A Few Good Men, Risky Business, and Rainman. And a whole lot of action movies, some of which I like, like the first Mission Impossible, Top Gun, and Minority Report.

When I first watched Oblivion, I liked the misdirection, and some of it confusing, like why is a vehicle of people in sleep pods being brought down to Earth by Scavengers? It is all made clear by the end, and so I appreciated it more on the second watch, and I would not call it predictable, but that is because I’m taking the story at face value, not trying to second guess the plot. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing it now.

I like TC. I'm a fan.

I wonder how much lasting $$$ damage Covid did to the movie theaters? I plan on seeing Dune part two but I feel pretty comfortable waiting for it to stream.

Even before covid, movie theaters are petri dishes. I never cared for the experience. Much more comfortable at home now, with the big screen and 7.2 stereo surround sound.

I missed the movie experience, and I’ve been back several times. But it does feel like I’m in the minority and overall attendance is still way way way way down.

I can't take the 20-25 minutes of trailers before a movie even starts. Just such stupidity these days! It's like they're trying to get people to stop going to theaters.

Trailers are upcoming movies are great. The problem are the “trailers” that are commercials for commodity products and streaming television services & programs.

Killers of the Flower Moon.

Just like the Irishman, this movie suffers from movie length and ends up a meandering mess. The best part of the flick is the ending when they do
the radio show
. That was vintage Marty. At least there was no 75 year old men pretending to be 45 though. That was hilarious watching young looking men move like they almost need a walker.

I feel like this and The Irishman are from the school of Casino filmmaking, not Goodfellas or Raging Bull or After Hours MS.

What's of interest is the very next movie I watched after KotFM was the first American Pie movie. I haven't seen that since 1999. What a different world we now live in. Surprisingly it holds up apart from the Jock turned sensitive thread. That never worked before either though. It's still as vulgar as ever as well, but quite clever in parts. Eugene Levy is so good as the father. I do wonder if any of his lines were improvised? It's a pity Catherine O'hara didn't play his wife.

EDIT: Yes, all his scenes were improvised and then written. Makes sense.

I’ve always hated the trailers that basically reveal the entire story, because they show significant spoilers and it makes me suspect the quality of the movie.

More the shortsightedness of quick gains from streaming, the pandemic was merely the catalyst; video tapes, then disks were a significant form of income for the studios frequently building cult status. That's all going away, no thx to non physical media and the greed of the few.

Upshot is we have never had more content to watch, yet the quality of new releases is questionable at best. Films & TV series have become the battle ground of directors, show runners & writing teams personal politics, not a function of entertaining the paying public. This process has destroyed longstanding franchises, splintered fan base's so a very few can patronise the greater majority, who now no longer care...

The good is such a trajectory is unsustainable with studios suffering flop after flop with budgets in the hundreds of millions. First rule is to write & create for your audience not your own personal sentiments or to massage your ego. Audiences will return to theaters when studios once again produce good films on a repeatable basis, not just once in a blue moon. Above all else quit with the social politics as for the most part it only serves to turn off the audience...

People in general also like to own physical content, so they can watch as they please. Studios either need to wake up to this or more and more will simply raise the flag and take to the high seas...

I used to be able to keep up with the best TV shows and movies. Now there is more excellent content than I can watch. Almost 80 movies in the last 2 years were rated 4* on the Roger Ebert website. Most are obscure so you do have to look for them.

Same thing for television.
