One of the best films I’ve seen in a long long time. Guy Ritchie, and it is the story of how the British stopped the Nazi U boat supply chain to allow America to join the war, because the U boats were guarding the Atlantic. Such a brave group of men and woman. It’s come after Churchill’s secret documents have been declassified in 2016 I think it said. Anyway well worth a watch.

Oh forgot to say it’s on Amazon Prime.

I ordered Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 4K used and was surprised to get a factory sealed copy with the digital copy intact. Just a few things I find fascinating:

1. The movie is nearing 90 years old but still has substantial sales
2. The American Film Institute ranked it among the 100 greatest American films, and also named the film as the greatest American animated film of all time
3. Disney mortgaged his house to finance it
4. the first film to be entirely scanned to digital files, manipulated, and recorded back to film.
5. Adjusted for inflation, and incorporating subsequent releases, the film still registers one of the top-10 American film moneymakers of all time and is the highest-grossing animated film.
6. Over 3 million hand drawn frames. Amazing how this was all done by hand.

Cult of the Cobra.

A 1955 B-movie, lot of actors that are familiar faces from 1970’s and 1980’s TV. A bit disappointing, the only snake to woman transformation is in a death scene at the very end, all of the other metamorphosis are shown just as shadows on walls.

Been a spell, like a decade or two LOL. Time to see how it stand up...

I didn’t know that classic was also from 1984. Sometimes I have the impression that that year was really an explosion of creativity and change. The Macintosh, for instance, was born that year. Many legendary movies and albums were released that year as well. It has something magical, and I don’t think it is because of the 1948 novel by Orwell.

There are years that are, somehow, blessed with great events and creations. Apple did a documentary about the year 1971, which apparently was also really rich music-wise.

Do you know that feeling when you watch a movie, you enjoy every minute of it, or the plot, the mystery, the scenes (photography), and get delighted by the performance of the actors… and after finishing it, you check that movie’s critiques, articles, reviews, and ratings on IMDB, RT & FA, the consensus is that it’s a piece of *********? At least, that’s their consensus. I disagree. Well, I can understand their point, but I enjoyed it and they cannot change that.

That’s what just happened to me with the movie “Dark Crimes” (2016), nominated to one of the worst movies of that year, and the lowest point of Jim Carrey’s career.

I disagree. I think it’s a great performance by Carrey. I think the dark, cold, humid atmosphere is excellently portrayed. And the plot keeps you hooked until the end.

I’m not sure if such harsh criticism is because the movie touches controversial topics such as BDSM and prostitution mixed with drugs and police corruption, or because my standards are lower than average. Or maybe because I just enjoy watching Jim Carrey.

I too think Dark Crimes is a good film. Very much a change in pace for Carrey which I think put many off kilter as they went into the film with preformed expectations. Not a surprise to see Charlotte Gainsbourg as Dark Crimes is very much her style of film.

As for the paid critics they are just the same as the rest of us, forming an opinion and sounding off. Only they put themselves on a pedestal and are generally best ignored...

Alien - The Franchise:

Alien - 1979
A master class in science fiction & gothic horror. Ridley Scott was talented & hungry, it shows. A tremendously creative team, given leeway and an extended budget to do it right by the studio. Alien feels eerily real and that's very much an accomplishment...

Aliens - 1986
Vietnam in space... The sequel had to be different, James Cameron knew this and made the right decision. A tremendous SciFi action film, not such a good horror film. A film that in many respects has yet to be surpassed on many levels, both technically & dramatically.

Alien 3 - 1992
Much maligned, had David Fincher been allowed to complete his vison undisturbed Alien 3 would have been a lot more than it is today. That said the Assembly Cut is a worthy watch. Personally I prefer Alien 3 over Aliens as it's more rooted in horror, also effectively closing out the original trilogy. Sadly the film is a prime example of studio & executive interference.

Alien: Resurrection - 1997
The odd one as it's kind of goofy in places. I see it a different take with it's own unique flavour, bit of an outlier all the same entertaining if into the genre. A popcorn flick with some horror/shock value, it works on it's own level.

AVP: Alien Vs. Predator - 2004
Extended version is fair, an ok watch. To me Alien & Predator were pushed together as a function of profit and dont really make for a good fit. AVP is an interesting scenario that's portrayed well, equally if I want to watch all the films in sequence I wouldn't include AVP as I consider it a separate entity.

Alien vs. Predator: Requiem - 2007
Plainly bad, there are better horror flicks from the 50's & 60's depicting kid's in a bind with an alien, monster or even a Blob for that matter... Unless an avid fan, save your time.

Prometheus - 2012
Technically stunning. I rather feel Ridley Scott wanted to direct/produce an Ancient Aliens film, however he had to tie it into Alien to get the greenlight from the studio. Prometheus is a good film, however the whole "bad" android storyline shatters any illusions the first three films so perfectly set up & projected.

Alien: Covenant - 2017
Another that's technically strong, however storyline & casting are all over the place. Further more reenforcing the "bad" android that only serves to shatter the illusion of fear & dread the original 1979 film so effortlessly set up & projects. Covenant is best described as how to get killed in space by alien's for Dummies...

Alien: Romulus - 2024
Cordially cautious as Romulus could be a return to form and Alien's horror roots or further extend Ridley Scott's "bad" android wet dream. We'll see soon enough.

To watch all the films chronologically & my preferred versions:
  • AVP: Alien Vs. Predator - 2004 - Extended/Directors Cut
  • Alien vs. Predator: Requiem - 2004 - Extended/Unrated Edition
  • Prometheus - 2089/2093 - Theatrical Only
  • Alien: Covenant - 2104 - Theatrical Only
  • Alien - 2122 - Theatrical Release (Ridley Scott states himself this is the definitive cut)
  • Alien: Romulus - 2142 - TBC
  • Aliens - 2179 - Special Edition/Directors Cut
  • Alien 3 - 2179 - Assembly Cut
  • Alien: Resurrection - 2381- Extended/Directors Cut
Last but not least Alien Isolation 2014. While a computer game it's a noteworthy entry in the franchise, if you've played you already know exactly why... You play as Ellen Ripley’s daughter, Amanda set in 2137, 15 years after the events of the first film. Set in one of the most horrific and tense environments/situations imaginable with little more than your wits to survive. Those that have interest check out this link here on MR.

Safe to say you will feel like your in the original film. You will be stalked & hunted by a perfect organism with a structural perfection matched only by its hostility. Alien Isolation, you will experience the fear & dread first hand of one of the most iconic & terrifying horror/Sci-Fi antagonists ever created, H.R Giger's Alien.

Arguably Alien Isolation should have been the source for a feature film as it get's back to the roots of Alien. Adding more twists & turns into the lore that make sense and honour the original, not disrupt it...

Of the series, only 3 are worthy. 🫤 I’m sure you know which ones. 😉 Since hope for any franchise is that they move forward, Prometheus excited me, there was an intriguing story, outstanding characters, a path to something more that was squandered horribly in Covenant, I hated it. Won’t go near Romulus until I hear a ton of feedback.

Feel that, as a fan I have to watch first hand. Romulus I want the film to go back to the roots of Alien, well done horror. Tagging into Prometheus & Covenant deeply concerns, especially the latter.

Prometheus would have been far better as a stand alone film, if well received subsequently followed up. Sadly that wasn't the case so we got what we got. Covenant is a shambles at best, basically a cast designed to be Alien fodder. The recipe was spoiled from the get go. Demystifying the unknown, way to go to kill a long served horror franchise.

As for me "I'm not drawing any straws, I'm for killing that goddam thing right now"

or maybe not...LOL.
