Just watched this 2024 French version of The Count of Monte Cristo - have to admit I've never really been a fan of the book but I thought this film was pretty good. 🙂

I love the book!

Do they do a better job of making him "different" when he comes back? That is what cracked me up about the 2002 version, which I also love.

And that was a hard selling point in the novel but in the novel it's easier to swallow because you can imagine him looking just different enough to not be recognized.

He has a few disguises he uses which I'd say are fairly effective. Considering the years that had passed since anyone had last seen him I guess a good bit of makeup and wigs would have been enough addition to the changes time would have made on his features. Haven't seen the 2002 version. 👍

I love the book and the 2002 version of this story.
I love classic fiction but always tended to go for stories where the outcome for the main character was a little bit more cheerful. :D Looking at the plot of the original book, purists will notice some differences in the film (as there usually is) - the ending is not quite the same as the book. It's one I'll happily watch again though and I'll also have a look out for that 2002 version. 👍

I think it's a good film. Enjoyed it. Festive fun.
I think calling it "a good film" is stretching it.

But, I too enjoyed it as a holiday themed popcorn** flick, with lot's of familiar faces, none of which are doing their best work, IMHO, but good enough for what it is if you don't take anything too seriously. :)

** I didn't actually eat popcorn watching it. I rarely do when watching movies.

a.k.a. the rock being the rock...

Sure.

I always enjoy JK Simmons, one of my favourite actors. Though maybe not my favourite Santa? And wasn't he strangely "ripped" in this one...?

Chris Evans isn't bad, but in this one he was even more of a walking cliché than the Rock.

Lucy Liu only shone in the (relatively) brief fight scene.

As a Norwegian looked forward to see Kristoffer Hivju (who was awesome as Tormund Giantsbane in Game of Thrones) play Krampus. But the costume was a bit overdone, and the character wasn't too engaging.

But all this is me being a bit (too) critical. As I said, as long as you take it for what it is, a not too serious action/comedy holiday romp, it's entertaining enough. :)
