Other than financial reasons, what is preventing you from upgrading/migrating to M1 Macs?

For me its gaming, Overwatch to be specific. Currently, there is no workaround for this. I am hoping that they would port Overwatch 2 to Apple Silicon. Or if anyone know a workaround please, let me know. I really wanted to switch to Apple Silicon.

What's your reason?

Just 1 thing... the GPU. The M1 has fantastic single core and multi core CPU performance but it’s severely lacking in the graphics performance area. I do a lot of 3D modeling, app development and video editing. All of those things can be done on the M1 but it would be a downgrade in performance from my 16” MacBook Pro.

As much as I am looking forward to seeing how much the M1-X blows Intel out of the water, I’m much more eager to see how Apple will make their chips appealing to those of us needing graphical power.

If it wasn’t for that (and just liking the bigger 16” screen) I would trade in my 16” hand warmer.

I am already on a M1 Air as a secondary portable machine, but don't see my main Intel iMac 5k being replaced:
1) drivers for a few peripherals like WACOM drawing tablet, trackballs, audio interfaces (this is more a Big Sur problem than Apple Silicon)
2) I still need to use a few 32-bit apps (even Calatina is no go)
3) RAM, currently have 64GB, can probably deal with 32 but definitely not 16.

By the time a "prosumer" bigger AS iMac is out, like the rumored 32" XDR M1X iMac, its specs will probably exceed my needs and the OS issues surrounding drivers may be ironed out. That is the point where I consider a complete switch. 32-bit apps can be done in a VM or remote desktop to an old Mac, which is a hassle but ok.

For me it comes down to being able to use Windows with my current Macbook. I use it exclusively for games, nothing high spec (I have the console for that) but some older PC titles that I still enjoy. My 2016 MBP is still working nicely so no need to change it just yet.

I bought an M1 MBA last year.

I am also using a 2017 5k imac and the current 24” imac isn’t enticing enough to get me to upgrade. It’s still going strong (fusion drive is slow, but I do have 40gb of ram inside). The screen is gorgeous and it pretty much does everything I need.

Maybe I will just hold out for the next revision.

Because the M1 is an iPad chip aka A14X with a different naming for marketing purpose. So it doesn't make any sense to get the M1 if people upgrade for performance.

Hence I am waiting for the M2X which will be a chip designed for laptops and not an iPad. Hopefully it comes with more than 2 ports too and have fixed some of the "first-gen" issues such as bluetooth problems.

I want a 14” display.

13.3” is a bit small after using 14” X1 Carbon for years.

I want a bigger iMac. I am using a M1 Mac mini with a 32-inch external display right now. So I'm waiting for the new 27-inch replacement, which will hopefully be larger than 30 inches.

As primary machines?

Short story:
  • Desktop: support for three monitors (no display link nonsense), maybe a bit more memory (32GB). I have a PC box under the desk for heavy workloads, so this would be ok for me.
  • Mobile: A 16” MBA or MBP (maybe 15 is ok) or in a perfect world a 15/16” iPad running macOS when docked (with full external monitor support) and iOS UI when undocked.
Long story:
Apple broke the software ecosystem. It’s focused on people doing photo/video/music work. While I do photo/video every now and then, I need Tensorflow and Pytorch as minimum for daily work, some other stuff as well. Tensorflow fork from Apple is a mess right now. Back when the first 16” MBP came out, it took a little additional effort to make things like PlaidML, AirSim, CARLA and other things run. Recently, it’s become a task that is too time consuming. I now have a Razer laptop with RTX5000 in addition to my MBP16.

GTC this year made it clear that Nvidia ISAAC is a must have (switching from Coppeliasim), plus DriveSim is coming as a community version this summer (previously required two Nvidia boxes @ $500k each). All things are saying Nvidia is the way to go. This might change in the future, but for now Apple is my daily driver for non-demanding tasks as I’m not willing to give up on the user experience. Carrying a Razer + macOS iPad would be perfect, carrying a potential MBA16 + Razer would work as well, but not as nice. Besides the daily tasks, I can still connect to workstations/servers of course, I just don’t need the Apple horsepower anymore.

Hmmm, what? Are you saying the M1 is not a performance upgrade coming from a mid-2010 27" iMac?

...I guess with "people" you meant yourself.

That said, I'm waiting for the bigger iMac.

I have four 27-inch monitors on my desk. Three are 4k, one is QHD (iMac 27). I am casually shopping for another 27 inch iMac. I like the big screen, that I can add 32-128 GB of RAM, and I have one program that runs poorly on M1. I like that I can also use two external displays with the iMac 27.

I would like an M1X to replace one or both of my MacBook Pro 15s (2014, 2015). I want MagSafe, no TouchBar, HDMI, multiple monitor support and at least 32 GB of RAM. My daughter has an M1 Air and I am impressed but I have what I need right now so I can wait for the more Pro models to come.

My main system is a Windows 10 system with 10700 and 64 GB of RAM and 5 TB of SSD. I'm using a Late 2009 iMac next to it for office-type tasks and it's fine for that. So heavy stuff on Windows and light stuff on macOS. It would be nice to run everything on macOS but I'll have to look at their next gen systems to see if they will work for me on the desktop.

I was ready to buy as soon as they became available but it became clear that they were only updating the lower end Macs - I wanted a workstation replacement i.e. the equivalent of the 4 port MacBook Pros - so that is what I am waiting for.

I could have got by with the software I need, but as time goes on more and more of the products I need are compatible with Apple Silicon.

Realistically speaking how likely are we to see the new m chips to match or outperform intel and dedicated gpus in laptops?

What is preventing me right now is the uncertainty regarding how much more ipadOS is going to get from this.

My ipad pro is due for replacement, but i also want an m1 mac. I think i'll hold out til WWDC, see how much new stuff ipadOS gets and if it gets enough of the things i want (for use on the go) that are holding me to macOS, i'll jump on the iPad Pro 12.9 and consider ditching the Macbook Air I currently have and maybe end up with a mac mini.

If ipadOS does NOT get the things i want, i'll upgrade to a Macbook Pro 13" and palm the 2020 Air off as an upgrade for the GF who is currently running my old 2015 13" Pro with a slight case of staingate :D

i.e., I'm going to have a new iPad and a new mac in my future reasonably soon (both within the next 12-18 months or so), but the order in which these things happen, and which devices I end up with all kinda hinges on how well the iPad handles a bunch of the stuff I do day to day. It's been ALMOST good enough for me to switch as my main portable device for a few years now but not quite.

I’m a bit Overwatch player, I hope they port it over but why not just get a PS5? OW2 is going to be cross platform anyway

Besides finances, as a general rule I don't buy first gen or new release IT products until they have been proven in the marketplace, and had any flaws/bugs exposed and dealt with.

In this particular case I am also hanging out for a 32GB RAM option, and cheaper storage prices will be a bonus too.

The M1 aka A14X is not the performance chip, so it does not make sense to buy it if you are looking for performance. It is not what Apple designed it for.

The performance chips are coming out later this year.

I want a mid/hgh end iMac and that's not M1 is so I'll be waiting for the M1X or M2 or whatever the mid/high end is called.
