Waiting for a larger Imac than the 24" to replace my 2011 27." Although I might break down and get the 24" in two hours :)
Ugh.

So I did break down and order an Imac.

I spent the afternoon and evening figuring out what other adapters and gizmos I'll need. And ran into the hard truth that running external monitors is always going to be a compromise on an M1. I have a graphics tablet, an external 2K monitor, and a 2011 Imac that I would like to use for an external monitor with Luna Display. But the only way this will work would be to spend hundreds of dollars on a Displaylink Hub and pray it's compatible with a Luna Display. Which is looking increasingly like a bad idea. There are some other alternatives, but none seem very attractive right now.

I'm going to see how I feel tomorrow and may cancel my order. The lack of support for external monitors is ridiculous in a machine that ultimately ran me $2k with Applecare. I am not happy at the moment.

If by "nagging" you mean the Red badge on the system preferences icon;
these are the "Red Badge Killer" commands used in a terminal window, or use iTerm2:
1. sudo softwareupdate --ignore "macOS Catalina" --- or
sudo softwareupdate --ignore "macOS Big Sur"
2. defaults delete com.apple.preferences.softwareupdate LatestMajorOSSeenByUserBundleIdentifier
3. softwareupdate --list or softwareupdate -l
To check to see that it works, which asks the software updater to check for updates:
It doesn't seem to stick. :(

SSD Problems that are occurring in many M1 Macs. I am worried that Apple has not yet addressed the issue with the ssd life span being shortened to less than 2 years and I need to have my M1 last for 5+ years.
What ssd problems are occurring? I haven’t heard of any ssds actually failing?

(SSD's won't be observed failing yet because they've only been out 6 months)

This doesn’t make any sense. Lots of butterfly keyboards failed. Many people on here reported that their keyboard failed. I had an MBA keyboard fail once and an MBP keyboard fail three times.

The SSD write limit specification provided by the SSD manufacturers is conservative by an order of magnitude. So I was earnestly asking if there are any reports of SSD reports failing (since the post I responded to seemed to state that some had already failed).

Since you are badly deflecting by a counter-example that proves my point, I will assume that this means that, no, no SSDs have failed.

There was one sketchy report on Twitter that an M1 SSD failed after about 600 TB written but the smartctl output shown was edited and I haven’t heard of any follow up. That is the only one I’ve heard of. If this was a wide-spread problem, I would think that there would be more reports.

For me not yet upgrade to apple silicon because my current iMac is higher end of 21.5 inch. New 24 inch is pretty much same and use same as MBA, base MBP and Mac mini. Also I want keep my iMac 7 years plus. Also I always wanted bigger screen. So I am waiting bigger screen and higher end of iMac. Only reason get 21.5 inch (my current iMac) was there no physical space to fit 27 inch screen. It just about fit 21.5 inch. My desk and space was very tiny. Now have more room so 27 inch or whatever bigger one is will now fit.

- the lack of a sufficient speech-recognition and the official support of windows for arm64 in Parallels.
Unfortunately Dragon professional in Parallels for M1 is laggy.
- and the artifacts / blackouts of the hdmi - connected 4k Display.

For now I will not upgrade the M1 Mac mini I own (16GB, smallest SSD) and I will not buy any M1 Mac for the company I work for.

I don't need one right now, I'm waiting for the next generation, and I use it for work and we can't (yet) connect our own computers to our network, although our IT is working out procedures to do so for the future. Although everyone is working from home, IT is still in office-mode. And even if I absolutely needed a new computer from work, our IT doesn't yet support M1 Macs. If my work laptop failed they'd ship me a 2-3 year old one.

Im waiting for WWDC to see if anything particularly useful comes out for ipadOS to make decision whether to get basic’ish iPad/3rd gen 11/12.9” iPP and 13” M1 Air/14” Air combo within year or simply go all in with 16GB 12.9 iPP.

For me, the prospect of a 14" MBP with M1X or M2 chip keeps me from jumping on the M1. Right now, the only M1 Mac that makes sense for me is the base MacBook Air. And I would pick up one of those (Amazon has been letting them go for $899) except that I already have a 12.9" 2020 iPad Pro with 256gb of storage and a Magic Keyboard.

Same here, waiting for what WWDC has to offer. Hope they come out with MBP 14". Don't really care what they would called that NEW chip. Finger cross for a dedicated GPU chip as well. If so, that is going to sell like hot cakes.

No removable/replaceable/upgradeable internal storage. No support for exclusively external storage if the internal were to die. Forced obsolescence.

I'd have to replace my printer, audio interface, video capture hardware, and scanner for compatibility. Probably other things too, but that's what initially comes to mind.

I'll also have to forfeit something like 50% of my games library by upgrading past Mojave.

It took me a while to make up my mind but I want to upgrade my current setup to iPhone Pro Max and MacBook Air only. What stops me from getting myself a new MBA:

  • No native Windows support/access as I need to run one program for my work to be able to do the work-from-home thing and I'm not into paying for parallels while still having 2018 Mac mini with bootcamp at this point.
  • Old design with too big bezels for my taste.
And I'm not interested in other devices as I simply won't use them to their full potential and I really do not need them.

I will try to wait for M3 which hopefully will be build on 3 nm TSMC process. It should give even more power efficiency to fanless MBA. I also wait for a new design (even if it is similar to new iMacs which I expect to happen and have mix feeling about) - smaller bezel, perhaps bigger screen with more brightness to it. I would love to get miniLED in MBA, but I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon despite Kuo's reports.

Wherever my feet take me…
For me, it's being able to run Windows (specifically games). Yes, I know I can just get a Windows computer, but I don't want to have to buy & use 2 computers. Yes, there's an ARM version of Windows, but it's still a developer build AFAIK, but I don't like running those. Plus, I prefer running it at native speeds, not in things like Parallels.

A very good point about the 3nm process and the MacBook Air. For those who can't afford or won't pay for a MBP and need to do a bit a heavy lifting, this could make a big difference. But this is likely to be another 18-to-24 months away.

I've now ordered one. I have a Windows PC for games and heavy duty desktop stuff, so that's covered. I just want a decent laptop for, well, 'laptop things'. The portability and great battery life is a plus here.

Ordered from Apple for the 14 day 'No quibble returns' aspect. There are some worrying issues with this first gen on these forums (e.g. external displays going wrong in all sorts of ways) so we'll see how it performs upon arrival tomorrow.

Sure, but then you should wait for the 2nm M# chips. Think about how good they will be.

Of course, there's always something right around the corner. But if his current gear is good, he might as well wait for that advantage.

Really waiting on a new design for MPB (and 14 inch this time). Honestly, the screen needs thinner bezels by 2021 standards. Current version just constantly reminds me of the 2016 model - a complete failure.

I actually bought one, an M1 mini. But I have hardly used it because currently, OBS Studio is not available for Apple Silicon, deferring my planned use case for it.
