Are you 100% sure there won’t be an iPhone X plus?

Yes.

I believe that the X is it’s own series of iPhone that lives independently of the 8/8 Plus and other phones of that legacy generation. As such, it will remain its own size with its own proprietary features maintaining a high retail price without the size and pricing dilution currently governing the rest of the line.

You cannot say with all certainty that there will NOT be an iPhone 6.5 X Plus, which has been heavily rumored for quite some time. You’re free to believe what you want, but what you say is not fact. The most trusted source I rely on myself would be Ming Kuo, I value his predictions over your own.

I respect that view, RP. I just see it differently.

If the X design and featureset becomes the new defacto 6/7/8 then Apple will have forever missed its opportunity to have a distinctive higher-end model that stands alone atop the smartphone world and I just can’t see them doing that.

And adding a Plus sized X model while maintaining the lower-end Plus models sounds harmless enough but I believe it would be too big and expensive to be successful so I can’t see Apple doing it. We’ll see.

Definitely agree. And one of the underrated features of the iPhone X is that a mere tap anywhere on the screen wakes it up for either viewing a notification or immediate Face ID unlocking, it's so smooth and so fast and so effortless it really is the advance that Apple claimed it was and that I refused to believe until I tried it.

The downside is that my daughter has an antique iPhone 7 and I'm always tapping on the screen to wake it up and forget I have to reach for that clumsy home button. So glad it's gone.

Face ID will also be the reason I'll feel compelled to update my perfectly-fine-otherwise iPad Air II. I want the ease of launch, the ease of password management, and those great gestures.
[doublepost=1518583461][/doublepost]

I don't speak for Apple I speak for myself. There won't be an X Plus simply because it would be too expensive. If the X is $1,150 this mythical X Plus will be, what, $1,500? Price is the #1 reason people choose the 8 Plus over the X right now and it's mainly for people who need a big widescreen phone to watch videos because they don't have a TV. Look for prices to come down from the 8 Plus and become the iPhone 8S Plus and iPhone 9 Plus before you ever see an iPhone X Plus.

As mentioned before the general conscious is that on the next release if Apple do go the plus route, is the whole line is gonna change, the Plus would be the flagship and the other devices would be priced down from there so the plus would be in the region of the current X price. The price gap could be quite small. The rumours of the X being discontinued probably really amount to the X being discontinued in name only. Apple were very cleaver in this regard and it gave them a lot of leeway in how they go about the next batch of releases. With the very high margin on the X Apple also has a lot of room to play with pricing structures on the future realises. Those that held off on an X at launch because of price maybe will see the new release as a relative discount and those that want a larger device will not be priced out of the market. Apple wants to push sales in Asia where phablets are the norm and Android is king, they are not going to do this by sticking with the current footprint of the X or buy introducing a higher priced device.

I am not sure where you get the notion that a plus sized device is bought for a primary way to watch movies etc..instead of a TV. Most people mention in the whole debate about screen size and movies its for when communting or traveling and as a secondary or even tertiary device in this sense. Mid size HD TV's these days are very cheap. Phablets were and have always been marketed towards production and business use, the caveat would be the Razr phone which is apparently a bit of a flop. With the size of the current X that may make the comparison somewhat muddied as compared to a standard iphone 8 it is technically bigger but not crazy big.

I'm fairly confident there will be an Xs Plus (or whatever they call them) as the Plus phones are good sellers for Apple.

The oddball phone that's in the rumor mill that's a head scratcher is the cheaper 6.1" LCD version. That one makes no sense to me given the rumored feature set removals from it.

I see the rumors holding true with at least a Xs and an Xs Plus..

If the rumours are close to true, perhaps it will separate the model out completely from the other 2 flagship devices, there will be less supply chain problems with the screen as Apple may want to try and sell these by the truck load in Asia.

Apple realises not everyone lives in the city and is kind to their Iphone so a device in the new form factor that doesn't cost so much to fix will be seen as good thing. I think this gets failed to mentioned as a reason why some may have skipped the X i.e very high repair costs.

You also have to remember Apple is in the business of selling the eco system, 1 cheaper iphone sale may lead to an Apple watch purchase or set of airpods and as we all know once you start along that road its harder to move away !! lol

The main problem with the cheaper rumored version is the removal of features like 3D Touch. These are just rumors so I guess its a wait and see type thing. If they are true then the cheaper version is odd in my opinion.

IMHO I can't see them removing those features, it will just be wireless charge etc.. camera on par with the 8 but perhaps single lens only.

I think just the lack of OLED will be enough of a difference for most people.

There probably will be a larger X model but I think there's a chance there isn't.

I know iPhones are a much different story but I keep thinking of the 12" MacBook when it came out. It was cutting edge tech, fitting all that into a small form factor and weighing practically nothing. Many people said it was too small so they were sad that they couldn't get the latest tech because of the size. For years everyone was convinced that a 14" Macbook was imminent. Never happened. It's a possibility with the iPhone but I'm leaning towards them releasing a larger one based on all the leaks.

Exactly right, Noobinator.

I own a 12" MacBook and the iPhone X is the parallel. When Apple decides to make something very unique and markets it as such they stay the course and see it through.

The 12" RMB isn't for everyone. It's for that commuting business executive or backpacking student who will pay a high premium for a fully-featured notebook computer in something that weighs as little as a tablet. The X isn't for everyone either. It's for someone who will pay a high premium for the very best experience, is in Portrait 99% of the time, and doesn't use his mobile as a TV or a game console. That big screen consumer is the one that's balking at the $1,000 price and Apple already makes a phone just for them; it's called the iPhone 8 Plus. Soon to be the iPhone 8S Plus, then the 9 Plus, then the 9S Plus. With the Plus prices falling each year. The X is its own separate thing.

I think the 6.1” if it exists will be aimed at the average iPhone user. The European market is one where the X hasn’t been as popular due to price as it has been in the US so this market needs an appealing iPhone. As you say though the puzzling part is the spec and lack of fundamental features like 3DTouch as the rumour mill suggests. It’ll be a bit of a weird release if it’s basically a crap version of the X. It’ll just lose out to older iPhones sold for cheaper.

Macs have always been niche and never really tried to compete in the wider PC market. It’s a bit different to the smartphone market which Apple have worked hard to dominate at the top end. I think they’ll want a true flagship Plus model as a certain element of their user base have got used to carrying a huge phone. It’s a potential market to exploit just like Samsung have done with the Note.

I think we’ll see the X line coming down in price and the possible X Plus replacing the current X as the true flagship at around £1200. That’s my prediction based on a lot of rumours and suggestion.

I don't see that happening. I think people (I don't mean you specifically) are confused by the rumors of the X getting discontinued. I view that to mean when the new models are released the current X won't be sold as a year old model for less dough..

I see Apple doing this

Xs = Same $999 base price
Xs Plus = $1100 or $1149 base price

The oddball rumored phone? I have no clue how Apple would price that. Maybe somewhere in-between the current 8 and 8 Plus pricing at $749? But if it's missing features It's going to have to be MUCH less than that..

If Apple wants to keep the "X" models at $999 or above - and it makes perfect sense - then a 6.1" LCD phone at the current iPhone 8 price also makes perfect sense. What other alternative does Apple have at that price point - an 8S? I have no clue about the LCD phone not having Force Touch, but I agree that they want to bring iPhone X type features (Face ID, slimmer bezels) to the $700 price point.

Let’s hope the dumbed down specs on the mid tier iPhone don’t come true then as I think it’ll be a bit of a flop and further alienating their core user base. If they want more people using the latest features the X has then they either need to review the high price or make an alternative attractive. They are not going to do that with a crap camera and lack of 3DTouch IMO.

Quite possible, bear in mind that in the UK the base X is $1400 and the 256GB $1600 , a 8+ 64gb is $1118 & 8+ 256gb here is $1328

If Apple kept the same pricing structure a X+ 256gb would be in the region of $1750 in the UK and the UK is not the most expensive place in Europe for Apple devices.

More iPhones are sold in the UK than any other European country too apparently. The price increases since Brexit are changing trends here though with the likes of the 8 and X taking a back seat.

Do not listen to that guy. He has no clue what he has been talking about in this whole thread.

Yeah, because I'm the one who said that if you combine every iPhone ever made, they outsold the iPhone X.

Apple can't bring iPhone X type features like Face ID and slimmer bezels to the $699 pricepoint because if they do they'll lose the $1200 pricepoint which just became the best selling iPhone every week since its release in November. Face ID, advanced gestures, edge-to-edge display, OLED, and the rest are what makes the X worth so much and that will be protected.

This ludicrous wish upon a star that the best features of the X are going to magically appear on a big Plus screen with the price of an iPhone 7 is laughable beyond words. I'd like a Mercedes with the features of a Bentley at the price of a Kia, please. Make it happen, Benz. LOL.

My question is, if Apple offers a 6.1 LCD iPhone, do they retain the iPhone 8 in their lineup, alongside the iPhone 7 and 6S? That Technically would be four LCD options, given though the 6.1 LCD iPhone would be similar to the iPhone X. That Seems kind of convoluted and I wonder if Apple will reduce the lineup with the LCD models.

Apple have called the iPhone x the "future of smartphones." This suggests to me that they want to bring iPhone X style features across its entire iPhone line.

Apple also wants to sell iPhones at prices ranging from $399 to $1,299 or higher.

The question becomes what does Apple do for phones that cost less than $999?

Do they just continue to make Touch ID, bezel LCD phones with new internals (like the iPhone 8)? That seems unlikely given Apple is saying the iPhone X is the "future."

So what does this new, $699-$799 phone look like? The person with the closest ear to the supply chain has been consistently saying it looks like an LCD, 6.1" phone.

Buyers like yourself will continue to buy the X series because of the OLED screen, steel body, premium feel, etc.

The "mass" iPhone buyer (the tens of millions still sitting on iPhone 6, 6s and 7 Models) will go for the new phone.

That's what Apple hopes. Honestly, I don't know if it will work as Apple has never successfully made its lower priced iPhone as "desirable" as its higher price iPhone - with the possible exception of the 8+, which is why we have this thread. But it is very obvious what strategy Apple is pursuing.

The 6S is likely gone this year. 7, 8, 6.1" LCD, SE.

If the new LCD phone lacks wireless charging and Force Touch, it will be fascinating to see how it sells compared to the 1-year old iPhone 8/8+ models, which will be $100 cheaper.

My opinion is that the lineup will always feature:

SE (entry level)
8/8 Plus (prior year's core line at a reduced price for 6 months then discontinued)
8S/8S Plus (new introduction of prior year with tweaked features)
X (then X2, X3, etc, Apple's premium smartphone offered in one size with advanced features)

Think of the 6/7/8 lineage continuing as it always has, the "S" every other year, the really giant Plus size. Then think of the X as it's own new lineage but just 1 form factor changing year over year and being replaced, not price-reduced. That's the 12" MacBook analogy. That's what keeps Apple in a space only they can occupy in the entire industry- a very expensive super premium smartphone with proprietary features. I don't see them giving that up. This past Christmas' performance makes the strategy a fantastic success.

What is now the 8/8 Plus remains the sub-$999 core smartphone line, ultimately becoming the "S", then the 9 and so on. Forehead, chin, LCD, home button, the usual since 2008.

And then the X is maintained for the foreseeable future as the carved-out space for the super premium product with advanced features made in the perfect size, edge-to-edge display, gestures, etc.

Now, it's tough to predict which features will drop down from the X line to the 6/7/8/9 line over time, but it will only occur when something superior is available for the X. So let's say in 2020 there is a better technology than Face ID developed- that would appear on the X line and then the old Face ID will be pushed down to the 6/7/8/9 line.

What we all need to wrap our heads around is that Apple has created a new market segment for super premium smartphones and it's not going away. In an industry where innovation is slowing down and consumers are holding onto their handsets for longer periods of time, it's a brilliant survival strategy. While Android races to the bottom, Apple glides by at the top.

This is, theoretically, a route Apple could take. I could understand this strategy. But the facts are that the reliable people in terms of knowing what Apple is planning do not think this will happen.

No real sense in further debating this now. Let's wait a few months for the rumor mill to firm up.

This is an interesting perspective. It remains to be seen if it holds true. For now, given the forecasts from the most reliable analyst tracking Apple, it doesn't seem to be the case.

Common sense also dictates that it won't happen. Apple will simply not sell a "new" range of phones with bezels the likes of 6,6S,7,8 - there are simply no buyers for "new" (i.e. not price-reduced last year's models) products like that.
