I'm kinda at the point where I just can't muster up the courage to upgrade until my current devices become too slow or outdated. It just seems wasteful. My most desired feature on the iPad is OLED, but again, I can't see myself updating until the experience with my current iPad becomes too frustrating.

For me, as soon as the 2021 iPad Pro comes out, I'm getting one. I need to replace my 2018 11 inch iPad Pro because its got a cracked screen (still works but looks awful) and the battery life is dying.

Despite working at home and using my 27 inch 5K iMac most of the day, I still use my iPad Pro every day. Using the Pencil, I can annotate and mark up PDF documents and invoices from my staff, which is so much faster than on the iMac. Plus watching a movie or reading on the couch, switching music to the various HomePods, Zoom/Teams/Facetime calls from the kitchen, etc.

I love my iPad Pro 2018 12.9" and use it everyday, but when I think about whether I am willing to shell out $1200+ for the new 2021 one, its a hard sell. Mini-LED, A14 processor, and 5G alone are not going to do it. The 2018 iPad Pro screen is great, the A12x is plenty fast, and 5G right now is no real advantage. I never use the back camera on my iPad so camera means nothing to me.
iPadOS has it's limits so comparing the price to a new M1 MacBook makes the sell even harder.

The one thing that would make me upgrade in a heartbeat? Give it 8GB of RAM and let me bootcamp my iPad into Big Sur with a mouse and keyboard when I need a desktop class OS. Instant buy.
Why would you spend hundreds more on an inferior iPad over an M1 MacBook? Especially when you want to use a mouse, keyboard and a “desktop class OS”. Just get a MacBook and save some money.

It’s all about having 1 device does covers both iPad use cases (especially tablet form factor) and Mac use cases. Why carry around a Macbook AND an iPad.....

..and you think Apple is dumb enough to kill off the need for a MacBook AND an iPad? How hard is it to carry around a 1 pound tablet with a 2.6 pound laptop? lol. I remember when a laptop weighed 10 pounds not too long ago, kids these days  They will never make the iPad fully useable just like a MacBook, but you can always dream...

With a 15 pound carry-on limit, every pound counts especially when the luggage itself is already half the weight. We've had an instance where we had to leave stuff because we were 1-2 lbs over the weight limit.

Move the camera to landscape side, some additional RAM and a second USB data port.

Kids? I’m 54. I am also a consultant who travels every week for work. The iPad Pro today can run Big Sur with no problem (though some more RAM would be nice). Apple could market a special version of iPad Pro call it iPad Pro Max with more RAM and includes the magic keyboard - they could easily charge a premium for it that would cost as much as Macbook + IPad if they are go concerned about revenue.

They would never sell a mouse based system with touch-first device, even without considering the argument of selling 2 devices instead of 1, which is a strong argument too... MacOS is not being optimized for touch despite some small changes in BigSur that made people think it was... Not happening, not in the next 10 years at least...

Besides what was already mentioned in the post above mine, how many people would even consider a $2k iPad? ? No one in their right mind would buy that over a MacBook, maybe a tiny group would even entertain it. Apple is not in the niche device game, sorry. If they can’t mass produce it and sell it by the millions, they aren’t making it and pretty much no one is in the market for a more expensive iPad. I’m typing this on my $1,150 absurdly priced iPad Pro 12.9 by the way. Bought a new iPad Air 4 for $549 that will be here tomorrow and I’m selling this thing. iPad Pros are overpriced as is.

I’m atypical but for the 12.9” I want a convertible form factor, and a return to thicker bezels and Touch ID. And return of headphone port would be nice.
Also whatever is needed for less refreshing—more ram, I guess.

I can understand Touch ID and headphone jack, and agree with that, but why thicker bezels?

I can only only presume. I have a gen 2 12.9 and hold it one handed using the bezels and back to support it
I have a gen 1 12.9 and the 11 pro and honestly palm rejection is pretty good on the thin bezels one. It does not work 100% of the times but I would say over 95% so it's almost a non issue. Contrary to my Samsung Tab S7+ which has basically no palm rejection and would clearly benefit from thicker bezels....

fair enough never used anything newer than my gen 2 12.9 and a S4 Tab and I do like the bezels when using it one handed. Good to know tho it’s decent ish on the newer models coz I will be upgrading from my gen 2

Yeah, I don't know how they recognize I am holding instead of touching the screen, but it works pretty well most of the time. I guess it must be a hardware thing, I doubt they can achieve this only with software...

Yeah I like having an easy place to grab the iPad knowing there is zero chance of an accidental press. Even if input rejection works well for the most part, it’s just not worth that little bit of extra screen (or size reduction) for me. I prefer bezels on phones for the same reason.

My first gen 12.9 that serves me ~4 years keeps restarting due to battery life late last year, decided to have it checked and sent to apple. 2 Days after, i got a the replacement and cost me nothing, so i guess i will still be sticking to this for more years. Good enough for media consumption and still fast enough. Let’s see how iPad evolve in the next couple of years.

While my partner‘s 2018 iPP started exhibiting phantom touches and screen replacement is quoted for a price of a new one.

...so i will not upgrade but excited for new tech inside the Pros, new ipad mini is something i might consider

Personally I am not bothered by the bezels, but by the weight... And I prefer touch-id. So if they made an old style 12.9 at the same weight as the new (but with type C and pencil 2 of course), I would take that, but 90gr less is a big deal for me, so I consider the lighter one a better option. Still not enough for me to make me upgrade my 2015 12.9 anytime soon. It's still great, especially now that it has a new battery.
For the mini instead, I am perfectly fine. Half a inch more makes no difference to me, so I gladly take touch id and bezel and will not be upgrading my mini 5 for many years.

What would it take?

Well, since I just upgraded to a 2020 IPP last year, they'd have to give me one.

The added weight matters to me more than the added size, but still negligible to me since I don’t use my 12.9 like a typical casual tablet.

I loved my 1st gen, and only upgraded to second gen because I realized after 3rd gen there would be no more bezels, Touch ID, and headphone port haha.

I also have no desire to upgrade my mini 5, unless maybe they add landscape stereo speakers.

Exact same thoughts, but as others have said I think its entirely unlikely. I sincerely wish they would let us dual boot iPad's. But I'll freely admit it would make me never have to buy Mac laptop again either.

Separate from the request to dual boot I wish they would put more ram in iOS devices. I constantly have to close app's on my iPhone to get new windows to open in safari. I occasionally have to close app's on my iPad to free up video hick-ups. It kind of drives me mad to hear over and over how iOS devices don't need more ram when in practice they seem to constantly need more ram.

A sure fire way for me to upgrade is the resale value of my current iPad Pro haha
