Yeah...I try to avoid the subject of my four logic board failures on my iBook. Doesn't look so good when trying to convince people Apple computers are superior.

I'm on my 5th one . Thats one thing I don't mention. I also dont mention that Safari sucks (atleast Camino works great) and that Dashboard uses grotesque ammounts of memory. Why should a widget that just goes to a webpage to download stuff use 20mb of ram?

After I listen to their story, I just politely shake my head in agreement and as I turn away, I'm flooded with a sense of cynicism and my mind goes into hysterical laughter. :D:D

This is especially true of people who have told me about their dilemma with PC's and after suggesting a Mac, they chose to nurture their dysfunctional behavior. :(

...but to reply directly to the topic of this thread; I've had no real issues with the recent builds of OS X and since I'm a recovering mac evangelist, I say nothing. Part of my therapy. :D

Am I the only one who's experienced the dull testicular ache? I assumed that the subtle pain was indicative of sterility. Hey, maybe I'm wrong... maybe it's giving them super-strength! :D ;)

Nope, you're right. It is sterility, and it is usually followed by Severe Impotence Disorder (or SID) ;) Or so I've heard...
But if you think this is Mac-exclusive then you've obviously never had a Dell Inspiron on your lap

That a PMac G4 800 with 768mb RAM and a Radeon 8500 64 mb couldn't run Knights of the Old republic, DOOM 3 and barely ran Jedi Knight 3: Jedi academy. Had its motherboard fail. This broken machine fetched enough on ebay to build a PC with Athlon 64 3000+ and Radeon 9600 pro 256mb which crushes Jedi Knight and KOTOR 1/2. And does respectably well on DOOM 3.

I just hate telling windows friends that my 4 year old Mac that couldn't do any real prductivity any more broke. Then that broken obsolete mac got me a brand new high speed gaming PC.

I kinda don't mention my Macs; it enables me to walk around with a look of self-satisfying superiority...

<--.... like that.

Other than that I sorta don't tell them about the vast list of apps that are not available on the Mac format and mumble vaguely that "oh there's probably some open source equivalent out there ... just search on the right sites ....."

As far as the Mac itself, it would have to be the sense of speed loss when you go from one format to the other.

Oh and the firewire could well be redundant.

I hate that the "home" and "end" keys don't work (usually) the way I want them to.

I agree, but there actually is a fix for this. Stole this tip from some where else, don't remember where.

Create a file ~/Library/KeyBindings/DefaultKeyBinding.dict with this
content:

/* ~/Library/KeyBindings/DefaultKeyBinding.dict - Home/End keys more like Windows */
{
"\UF729" = "moveToBeginningOfLine:"; /* home */
"\UF72B" = "moveToEndOfLine:"; /* end */
"$\UF729" = "moveToBeginningOfLineAndModifySelection:"; /* shift + home */
"$\UF72B" = "moveToEndOfLineAndModifySelection:"; /* shift + end */
"^\UF729" = "moveToBeginningOfDocument:"; /* control + home */
"^\UF72B" = "moveToEndOfDocument:"; /* control + end */
}

Yup, sometimes my G5 sees my Powerbook on the network, sometimes it doesnt. I hate that because then i have to unplug the network, try again, then try putting it to sleep and waking it up, and sometimes, eventually I have to restart. Boo!

I don't hold back any details about using a Mac to my Windows-using friends and family - I give all the good and all the bad when talking about anything related to my Mac experience. :D

The only bad things I've really had to share with anyone were:

1. Not compatible with our HP Officejet All-In-One (yet).
2. The way the sound console (or whatever) sleeps when no sound is played for x amount of time, then when you do something like send an Instant Message, the sound effect is delayed by almost 2 seconds.
3. Will see but not connect to my iPaq.
4. Expensive... but I always add that you do get what you pay for.. :D

Where on your screen is it? Mine is in the middle, about 1/4 of the way up. Obviously it depends on your text size, but I'm typing this in Safari, and it is where the "ili" is in smilies.

I don't tell people about that. Nor do I mention how slow Safari/Dashboard are sometimes. And the latch...but that is going to get fixed while I am out of the country.

OSX Networking really leaves something to be desired. It's really annoying that there are things that after four major revisions still aren't fixed. For example: If I'm at work and I mount a network drive, then put the computer to sleep and take the computer home without unmounting the drive, when I wake it up at home, the computer will lock up for about a minute when it realizes the mounted drive is no longer available. I'm unable to do anything; I get the spinning beach ball for about a minute, until it finally comes up with a dialogue box that says "(share) is unavailable" and it gives me an option to disconnect. This is something that Windows handles MUCH better.

I'm going to be either shot or banned for saying this, but i can't stand the way itunes creates all those damn folders and does not store all the music in just one.

The real thing that ticks me off is how SLOW iPhoto is. Granted i have 17,000 pictures but doing anything with them takes forever, resize, or organize. The fact that I burn my pics to a disc then re import them and they are all jumbled and lost all the organizing i did, while also importing the originals and stuff it non-sense. I had 10K pictures, formated the drive and re-imported the pictures and now i'm upto 17K it's ridiciulous that i have to go back through them. I saw my friend using Picassa and I didn't wanna show to much interest but on his old broken Dell he was scrolling up and down, making changes on the fly all without a single hiccup, i didn't wanna show to much interest

Call me crazy, but the last thing I want is 6000+ MP3s in *one* folder. Ugh.

My biggest complaint, right now, about OS X is the lack of a *good* image browser. iPhoto is fine for some things, but I don't want to add every image I ever use to iPhoto just to be able to browse it easily.

OS X really needs an app like ACDSee for fast and easy image browsing.

I hate the fact that i have to pay 70$ for a third party printer driver so that i can use my Canon printer over a network because of the fact canon is lazy. I love the fact that when we use macs in school im the only one in class who isint asking "Wheres the start button?".

Yep, this is what I mentioned above. Obnoxious. Even Windows is smart enough to just put a red "X" on the drive until you are back on the network again and can access it. This has been happening since 10.0 -- fix it already Apple!?!?!?!!!!!11!

ACDSee does make a mac version, but it isn't as good.

i like adobe's picture bridge that comes with photoshop CS2

things that i don't like in OS X:
cut/paste of files into different directories
resizing windows from only 1 corner
playing of various movies types (yes, even with VLC)
the [home] and [end] buttons which work in some apps and not others
the way itunes stores my mp3's (still working on this...)

but all in all, i love my mac.

I rarely have problems on my Powerbook, and it's a year and a half old. I think it has actually improved since I added Tiger. Everything seems to work smoother and faster.

Programs that I usually use are Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat Professional and Word 2004. I also use MSN Messenger and Yahoo IM to talk to my friends, since most of them are Windows users.

Occasionally, I'll have small problems that are quickly resolved. All of my programs open up well and quickly, and they don't crash very often.

Things I'd like (it isn't apples fault) is to use google earth (my roommate keeps flaunting that), and use yahoo's launch music video service. Little things like that.

Programs that I use all the time for my business are on the Mac, so I don't end up feeling that I need the zillions of other junky programs out there for Windows. Don't get me wrong, because there are a lot of good Windows-based programs, but there's a lot of junky ones I've had to deal with in the past. And I'm glad that there's no spyware or adware in free or shareware programs for the Mac.

I'm really used to a Mac now and it feels weird when I hop onto a Windows machine -- I've been caught trying to use Expose on Windows, just to find out there is none. No spotlight either (I love spotlight).

I don't play with my Widgets as much anymore (gee, that sounds dirty), only when I need a calculator or want to know what the temperature is.

I NEVER use Automator. Don't get me wrong, it looks like a fine program, but I just never had the time or need to use it. Same with apple scripts.

I like Safari and Firefox -- a thousand times better than Internet Explorer. I don't know why people still use IE. Probably because it's just there... Doing both print and web design, I can say that IE is the bane of all web designers. It just doesn't work correctly or it doesn't support new technologies (ie rendering PNG transparency correctly).

I like Mac Mail better than Outlook -- much better! Thunderbird is a good mail client, too.

But I've got question for all of you: Do the problems and limitations you experience on your Mac make you want to switch to Windows?

Also: What is it about Windows that you've found annoying? Was it those Windows annoyances that made you switch to Mac, or was it something else?

I hate the way that iPhoto beeps when I run a slideshow - it sounds like a cricket on helium. Changing the power performance doesn't help and I don't want to disable NAP which is the only solution I've read about so far.

Ok, this one is really stupid but also incredibly annoying (I get angry when I think about it  ): Don't you just hate how the mouse pointer on the login screen appears on the upper left corner (instead of the friggin' center where it should be) and you have to drag the mouse all the way down (it's a long distance on a 17" display) to get to the "username" textbox?! Why!? And tap-to-click doesn't work on the login screen either...

Also, dashboard is cool, but widgets are created mostly by incredibly incompetent pseudo-developers who think that "it's ok" for a widget to use 90% of the processor and 90% of the system memory just to display a static picture of homer simpson.

And some more:
-The networking problems mentioned above.
-Macs give you OCD (you have to wash hands before using them, you need sterilized q-tips to clean them, you have to buy a second set of peripherals so that you won't damage the originals that have cute little apples on them, etc.)
-If I see another "counter" widget I'm going to puke.
-Although you can tile windows with expose, you can't leave them tiled so that you can read a document while you create another document about the first document on another app (for instance).

I feel much better now :D I still love my mac.
