Stuff I never tell my Windows people:

* Safari won't load my bank Web site, won't properly allow responses to online polls (try answering a poll at http://www.sfgate.com), and is crash prone, so I don't use it anymore.

* There's hardly any drivers for off the shelf hardware, and those that do exist act like they were written in the 1970s. All those digital tape recorders, PCI cards, super sound gear and proprietary programs to support them - OS X drivers aren't made or supported.

* In the nonprofit sector, there's nothing that can compete with BlackBaud's software for fundraising and finances that works on OS X. Believe it or not, one company is still developing its fundraising software for OS9 in 2005! Their vendor got an earful from me...

* Using a Mac and an iPaq together are like trying to keep oil and water constantly mixed. Missing Sync in its 2.x.x version has been a great disappointment.

Things I'll admit that I like better on Windows rather than OS X:

- mouse movement feels a lot better and faster
- exploring files over a network is quicker and sometimes easier
- Photoshop runs a lot better, but that's because my PC is beefed up (I plan to get a Power Mac soon, so this will change :p)

But that's exactly why I still use both a Mac and a PC: for different reaons and likings. I'm more biased towards my Mac because I am an Apple whore like that :p, but that doesn't mean my PC is awesome too... because it is, but I just use it for games and whatnot. My Mac is used for everything else like video production, graphic design, digital photography, etc. Eventually I am going to outgrow my PC and move to Mac entirely. I'm not a huge PC gamer anyway, so my consoles can handle the gaming duties just well. :)

I went WAY too into that, huh? ;)

Hello my name is Diatribe and I am a Windows user...

...ooops, wrong thread. :D

Seriously there is little about this machine actually going wrong. The only two things bothering me are:

• Tiger beta up until 10.4.3
• corrosion on my Powerbook's palm rests

Other than that it is perfect.

I have 3 Macs, a PowerBook G4, an iMac G5, and a Power Mac Dual G5 all of them work perfectly, if anything I guess my friends would like me to stop raving on about how good they actually are!

"Only after we know each other better"

Here's my list:

- Mac hardware is simply more expensive for the power of what's supplied (with the exception of the iBook line and possibly the new Mac mini, which are great values)
- not only is the money spent on the one-button mouse included with the desktop models essentially wasted for those who used to right-clicking, but they'll need to spend more (on top of their system purchase) to replace it

- crippled Messenger client (which means a lot to IM users here in Canada)
- poor webcam support unless you want to buy an iSight. Heck--why not toss in a HD camcorder while you're at it?

- some website-embedded Windows Media content won't play (because of ActiveX controls? Anybody?) I've looked up the URLs of some of these files through their page's source code and viewed them externally. What a hassle. Also, it doesn't always work.
- WMV3 files won't play at all
- some .avi files require conversion with secondary apps (ie. DivX Doctor 2; ) others won't play correctly at all
- no ability to use media Yahoo!'s Launch site
- some sites (although few) restrict access to IE for Windows

- sluggish window resizing
- the inconsistent behaviour of the green resizing button

Whew! Feels good to get that out!

Of course the benefits outweigh these drawbacks for most. But I'll only introduce them into conversation after bringing up the advantages of our platform.

Just stretch it out if it bugs you that much.

Up until about last month, I was still "in windows mode"
Everything was maximized, it was... bleh.

Now, my windows are as big as they need to be an maximized windows freak me out. (well, not freak me out, but .. you know. I don't like them)

but.. I don't tell my windows friends.. Hmm..
I tell them everything! I GLOAT! MUAHAH!

It's mostly like:
Windows user: IE crashed again.
Me: That was the first thing I deleted off my PB. Try FireFox
Windows user: I don't have a Mac
Me: *bangs head on desk*

Hehe.. IE.

I also tell them that if they need any tech support.. to get a Mac and go to the genius bar. :)
(and that my house is NOT a genius bar.)

Hehe.. IE.

even when i rarely used windows i NEVER EVER EVER maximized windows, they were always just as large as they need to be, and then some jackass at the hospital will maximize the IE window and i will go on a tizzy because i despise of maximized windows.

thank god for no maximized windows or i would go insane

I have a Dell 24 inch monitor and Apples 23 inch ADC side by side. I have calibrated both monitors so I now know them well. The Apple Monitor while nice in every way is a little pinkish all around the screen for about 1 inch. To be honest I probably would not have paid any attention to it, but after calibration it is now irritating me. All monitors are not created equal, the Dell monitor when looked at even a slight angle fades out, the Apple monitor can be looked at at almost a 180 degree angle and it looks great, of course when you are working who looks at a monitor at angles? Also colors look brighter on the Apple monitor this cannot be calibrated into the Dell, so is the Dell the perfect one or is the Apple the perfect one? I give up.

Same here... well, minus the whole bit about hospitals and jackasses. I really don't like full windows. How the heck can you see everything else? :p

I don't tell them how iPhoto corrupted my photos, or how itunes corrupted some of my music, causing my iPod to crash.

And I try to keep my PC for running Pro/Engineer (and Picasa) quiet as well.

I like this! I can have 8 apps USABLE on the screen at once instead of just one! One major reason why I've started to use TextEdit over Word--it takes up less screen estate! :D

The Finder kind of sucks. The beachballs get irritating.

The number one thing I don't tell Windows friends? Just how irritating it is to be a Mac user and put up with ignorant clueless Windows users! Ugh!

Ummm...

1. My $3,000+ PowerMac G5 only has 3 USB ports and 2 Firewire(400) ports...and one of each of those are used to power the "hub" on my ACD...Last time I checked Dell's came with more than I could count on 2 hands.

2. You have to shell out $50 for an Apple mouse with a scrollball, you can't even "upgrade" to it in the Mice and Keyboard section of the Apple Store. Then you have 2 mice.

I'd never go back to Windows through. :shudders:

Safari RSS is forever crashing on my machine. It doesn't bring down anything with it, but the slightest little JScript error on a page and bam, done. Especially frustrating with 5 tabs open.

sorry to take over the thread with this bit of info but....

System Preferences > Network > now look for the TCP/IP tab and at the bottom you should see a button for CONFIGURE IPv6. Turn this OFF.

then if your running a wireless modem or router try configuring the PROTECTED MODE option to its off setting. this is what the definition says about PROTECTED MODE

Protected Mode
NOTE: In most situations, best performance (throughput) is achieved with Protected Mode OFF. If you are operating in an environment with HEAVY 802.11b traffic or interference, best performance may be achieved with Protected Mode ON.

i turned mine OFF. with these two changes to my setup i now have FAST web browsing. turning OFF CONFIGURE IPv6 in the Network preferences didnt really do much but i was told it could slow things down...but the second suggestion about the PROTECTED MODE made a world of difference. its like when safari was just released, remember how fast it was.

try at your own risk.

Err.... you're serious?

My gripe is the dead pixel on my 12" Powerbook. Out of a 1024x768 screen, I get one dead pixel - while in the past years prior, I have purchased 3 Dell laptops - one at 1024x768, one at 1400x1050, and one at a whopping 1920x1200 LCD resolution -- we're talking millions and millions of total pixels -- never any dead ones.

And my first Powerbook and WHAM.

Not cool.

It's cases like that where it would be nice to (somehow) break a few more pixels so your up to the limit where a company would replace the display.

And I generaly don't tell my Windows friends how old my fastest mac is, lol. 333mhz; just becuase its fun to watch them use it and think it's a much newer system.

So far, there is nothing I don't tell people about my Mac.

YES i am not the only one!!! Why are the power bricks 80 ***** bucks?? This is the one thing i didnt like about my ibook. everything else is great, but come on, the power brick shouldnt go bad in a little over a year!
My first one lasted TWO DAYS!

My other secrets.

1) My ibook had it's logic board go phut (just the once-sold it now)
2) My powerbook may one day think it only has one memory slot.
3) You can only use my powerbook on battery whilst it's on your lap otherwise it fries your knackers.
4) You can't put my powermac to sleep because of the PCI cards in it.

Also (not that much of a secret) - Yes you can get VirtualPC. It is VERY VERY slow.

Sometimes I just scroll when I don't need to with my mighty mouse; that little scrollball just feels so..... nice. But seriously, I'm kinda dissapointed w/ the mighty mouse, the scroll ball gums up every now and again (I guess from trace amounts of oil/dirt on my fingers collecting over time?), and I'm not sure about the layout of where the sensors are for right clicking, relative to how the side buttons are positioned. If I hold the mouse where I can easily squeeze 'em, then my other fingers are too far foreward to click properly, and waaaay to far foreward to scroll (esp horizontally). It just doesn't feel like it has that Apple Touch™ (i.e. things you never would think about were already thought of and solved and most people never even notice).

The other one is the gaming. I just want to have access to the games that other pc users have. I get my fix mostly from xbox, but lately I've been craving some real time strategy, and there really isn't a console solution for that prob.

And I guess on a related note, I just hate feeling like a second class citizen of the internet sometimes. It's rare, but occasionally you'll find a website that looks wonky, or that has a .wmv file that doesn't want to play. And most of the time the webmasters don't care.

Oh, and I hate how apple cripples its lower-end machines (esp. in the gpu deptartment --where you can't upgrade yourself) just to force you to by a fricken monster powermac. Ok, I'm done.... and I feel a lot better now.

Great thread topic by the way, I got a kick out of it.
