The Misty Mountains
This first aired back in Feb 2016, and somehow I missed it.* AMC has started a second run of The Night Manager, a John le Carre story about an arms dealer as a 6 episode mini series this last Tuesday. My machine, did not initially record it because I had it set for "new" episodes only. Remedied that and caught the episode as a re-run. Thumbs up so far. Liking the cast, Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie. Knowing AMC, I think the first episode will be repeated at least once more time before the next episode next Tuesday.

* Update: First airing in UK?

I know it aired in the UK earlier, but I was under the impression that AMC (in US) just started airing it this week for the first time. Forgot about setting a series recording for it myself, but just caught the first episode on-demand.

Thanks for clarifying! I thought i remember seeing the first aired date as Feb when looking at the recorded episode, but maybe I'm just a little confused having seen that date online, and still wondering my machine did not record it on its debut night. It's now erased so I'll check the next one (Tuesday).

Ah, was asking about this show in the Binge...thread. Just saw the first episode and thought it very intriguing! Has a big Homeland vibe to it. It's free on Amazon.Prime, in Europe at least.

But just came across by pure chance and just started with The Americans (what a treat!!) now so will take a while till I come back to it. The title is a bit off putting. Everybody I recommended it to was like: "The night what? Night Manager? Is that actually good?"

My brother was very impressed, and thought that Hugh Laurie made an unexpectedly compelling……..er, person.

By pure chance (The Americans)? There's a devoted thread in this forum! ;) Just tell them it's along the lines of The Unlikely Spy. :)

No, I came across The Night Manager by pure chance.

And I don't want to visit the Americans thread because I fear heavy spoilers!! :D
(Just four episodes in - absolutely loving it already!)

Have you, by any chance, seen "Deutschland 83" @twietee? I loved it.

No, but my girlfriend did and I think she found it excellent too. I was busy at that time so didn't join her in watching it (also I usually try not to get overwhelmed by too many (time consuming) new series).

If you haven't already you really should try to keep an eye out on Heimat by Edgar Reitz. I haven't made it through all of the movies but saw large parts of the first and the last of the first trilogy and it's totally stunning. Best depiction of life in Germany in the last century there is imo. I think Reitz did also a fourth part, but not sure. We have the collection at home as DVDs but it's just so heavy and long that it always takes a lot of effort to sit down and decide to go on with it. Still a masterpiece and I will finish it around this year ;). I'm convinced you will like it a lot.

Here is a link in case you're interested. I'm quite sure there is a version with an Engl. dub or Engl. subtitles available.

Loved the first series of Heimat - I saw it in the 80s - 1984, I think - shortly after it had first been been made. (Yes, it was broadcast with sub-titles).

Superb, as narrative, history, acting, atmosphere, pacing, epic scale and so on. I thought it brilliant.

(If memory serves, I seem to recall that the essayist, writer, and very well regarded commentator, Timothy Garton Ash, has an excellent essay about how Heimat, which addressed the whole idea of how German society engaged in the process of 'remembering' in one of his books of essays - I think it was "The Uses Of Adversity").

In the early to mid 1990s, I managed to see around half of the second series (then I headed off to the old Eastern Europe for a few months on an academic exchange and so missed the rest of it, but I seem to recall that it was a lot more patchy than the first series, some excellent episodes, some which don't work, not for me, at any rate); never saw the third, or fourth series - I don't even think they were carried on the British TV stations, whereas the first most certainly was, because I saw it on TV.

A fascinating new series broadcast on the BBC from the wonderfully erudite, entertaining and always interesting classicist, Mary Beard, entitled "Ultimate Rome: Empire Without Limit."

A drama or a documentary? Did you ever watch Rome the series on HBO (2 seasons)? I loved that. Might go look to watch it again.
