Who here enjoys a fun car with manual transmission?

Well my company Nissan offered employees a special lease rate for 2025 Z car, I just got mine yesterday.
Oh, it’s a manual transmission also, yep just cause. First manual I’ve had & driven since mid 1990’s, got into her, still second nature to shift with a clutch.

Upon placing my lease order on the Nissan employee portal, I had initially picked a pretty blue exterior color, was all set to select it, when there were a few white ones.

Instantly it hit me “my very first new car” bought upon working in 1985 at GM tech center 12 mile and Van Dyke Warren MI was this 1986 Chevy IROC-Z Camaro, white.
That’s me September 1985 with it in my parents driveway, 40 years ago.

Full circle, started and ending my 40 year auto engineering career with a white sports car.
I drove a manual for 10 yes in heavy traffic in the 1990s. During that time I was wishing the car could drive itself. Fast forward in 2025 same commute my wish has come true.

You know the feeling when you thought you knew who someone is and it turns out they’re actually someone completely different? And when someone says hi to you (and addresses you by name) and you have no idea who they are. Well both those happened today. I felt awful after that. I also have an extremely difficult time recognizing people by their face which is part of the issue I’m sure.

Just a relaxed day of my spring break.

Only thing is that there was an earthquake that was 5.1 magnitude from San Diego, but not too hard.

Anyone in Cali (y’all from Southern California specifically), experienced it today?

"Finally got 68040 under my title."

Why is this important to you? What does it matter overall in your life? How could or would it make your life different? In what way? In regard to participation on MR, what is the next goal? Why?

In the meantime, yes, absolutely enjoy Spring Break! It is always a welcome break especially at this time of year when Mother Nature is reawakening after wintertime and everything is beginning to feel new and fresh again for all of us.

I'm on the East Coast and so, while not experiencing it, have seen news reports of the most recent earthquake in CA -- glad that everything is OK for you and your family and your home and immediate area! Definitely earthquakes can feel very unsettling to those going through them at the time they are happening.

Bravo.

Very well said.

"Finally"???

Really, this matters to you?

Why?

Enjoy.

Not "too hard"?

What on earth does this actually mean?

Do you mean that the effects were "not too bad"?

Or, that they did not cause significant (or any) loss of life, or any serious, or significant, damage to property, or key elements of infrastructure?

"Cali"?

While many (if not most) of those of us who are members of this site are indeed from the US, and thus, can claim knowledge of this cosy, faux familiar, terminology when used as what seems to me to be an entirely redundant contraction (why not write California?) to describe somewhere in the US, there are those among us (among whom I count myself, as I hail from Europe, the British Isles, and not the US) who are not familiar with the US, do not know the US, have never, ever set foot in the US, and thus, may not be acquainted with such cosy contractions.

Anyway, while I did not (not least because I have not laid eyes on - let alone feet upon - California) experience the earthquake in California, I have experienced earthquakes elsewhere in the world.

Once, in the Caucasus, (where I spent more than two years of my life, with the EU), I slept soundly through an earthquake, proving, decisively, (if such proof was needed) that I would fail (always and forever) the Princess and the Pea test; a German colleague described having seen the walls move, and felt the floor wobble, and (subsequently) informed me that he had (initially) ascribed it to having consumed too much beer that night.

Some years later, an earthquake struck - quite a severe one - while I was sitting in my office in Kabul (yes, I was also working with the EU, on that occasion). I was alone in the office - it was mid morning coffee break time, my colleagues had departed before me, I was finishing off a report - and I vividly recall how the floor of the office weirdly wobbled, and tilted, while the water in my glass, lapped a little, as incoming (or outgoing) tides do.

"Not too hard"..

Was it "not too hard" for the earthquake to cause (that much) damage?

You know, this reminds me of the (infamous, nay, notorious) headline of legend: "Small Earthquake in Chile, Not many Dead" attributed to (the late, great) Claud Cockburn.

In my opinion, we should abolish the titles and like counts (“reaction score” as it’s known) completely. But that’s a topic for a different thread - and has actually been discussed on a number of occasions.

Doesn’t matter to me at all. What the person is saying is what’s actually important.

In USA seems most restaurants serve water with ice, I prefer my water without ice, sometimes I state that before they serve water, forgot Sunday .
Q for non-Americans, in your country do they serve water with ice automatically or just plain ?
(And what country you living in now)
Just “ what’s on my mind” now

Okay, this is a bit complicated for me because I grew up in a place where temperatures regularly exceed 105 degrees Fahrenheit. So water with ice is absolutely necessary if spending time outside in the summer. Along with good amounts of sunblock and sunglasses. However, if at a restaurant with air conditioning, or practically anytime but the summer, it makes no sense.

Agreed.

However, (and MR was - is - the first social media account that I ever joined, this was a whole new world to me), I don't actually mind a degree of harmless (perhaps, almost benign) enthusiasm on the lines of "gosh, I'm now...." or, "imagine, I've reached the inexplicable number of...", in other words, remarking on merely achieving, or, arriving at, a new designation, does not strike me as something to condemn.

In other words, I do not begrudge someone experiencing (or, taking pleasure from) a degree of benign (harmless) pleasure (as with an online game) in achieving some ascribed rank.

Notwithstanding that, however, I will admit that the adverb "finally" (in this context) did cause my jaw to drop and my eyebrows (behind their spectacles) to rise:

Actually, I realised that I wanted to ask whether the poster in question considers this an actual goal (worth achieving, or actively aiming for) in this life......

Irrespective of where I am, (and I have worked in countries where it is exceedingly - sometimes exceptionally - hot in summer), I will always ask that no ice be served with water (though I will always request a slice or two - preferably even three - of lemon...) - if the water comes straight from a refrigerator, ice is not necessary.

I thought there might be some value in a general topic-less thread to share random thoughts, ideas, and personal news that aren’t otherwise thread-worthy.

So, within compliance of applicable federal laws, regulations, and Community Discussion rules: what’s on your mind?
[doublepost=1536426505][/doublepost]Yesterday I attended a Naturalization Ceremony for forty-one American citizens.

In 1776 the population of America was roughly 2,500,000.
Today its 325,700,000 and 41.

This is the second ceremony I’ve attended. Both were moving. I was a bit disappointed with yesterday’s speakers but it was a pleasure being in attendance to honor these new citizens.
My thoughts right now. Sex and anxiety about exams

I’m curious about the numbers in the titles. They seem interesting, except for the funny dog ones on April Fools’ Day. I know it’s about Intel processors and past PowerPC processors’ evolution, but what’s the history behind of it?

Spring break is a good time to rest between winter and summer break, the longest breaks. We understand the new year is a way to start anew, but I agree with you about spring. I love photographing blooming flowers on trees, in bushes, and even California poppies!

The earthquake from San Diego shook LA and beyond. It shook a bit in LA, but a fellow poster from the Apple Watch forums who lives in San Diego said it was very strong. It swished pools, aquariums, and even shelves.

Most of California’s earthquakes originate from the mountains near the San Andreas fault line.

Only way if you don’t want to see it, but I’m curious: I don’t use the app as many users said on iOS 18 it causes problems and bugs whereas sometimes posts show up with random emoji spam if you view the thread on the web. Has that changed now? It used to be like that in beta.
