Just booked a trip to the Twin Cities next year. It’s at the end of February so it will be cold, but that was the only time I could swing it. I’m excited to visit—I’ve never been before.

I know that feeling although I do look forward to the time off work at Christmas as the phone and emails go quiet.

It’s got me thinking of ways to separate my work and home life. I’m self employed project manager so I only have 1 set of devices and very often find myself being text or emailed at all times which drives me mad..

I’m thinking of separate user accounts on laptop a work email and a new phone so I can fully switch off.. any tips to avoid a new phone? Do focus modes work?

Can you send specific numbers to voicemail, with a message saying you'll get back to them next weekday? Or send all except family members to voicemail?
It's probably cheaper than moving your family to France or Australia where you have legislated rights to switch off out of work hours.

Always wondered the point of keeping bugs or anything worst with software not revealed for a good amount of money? Like well over five figures. Even mobile devices as well but that a little less common. Never heard of any company offering it for a mobile device hardware.

So I have a separate MBP for work. In the evenings I just leave it on the stand next to my Mac Mini set up in my study. But for time off and weekends I tend to put it away so it’s out of sight.
A bit pointless as I have so much other work stuff in there at the moment. Samples of products etc.
As for phone I don’t get work calls. I access work emails through Outlook which I get zero notifications for.
Same for Teams. I turn off all notifications. But then that’s my standard set up for all apps!

I’m only off for the two bank holidays at Christmas. Not my favourite time of year as I don’t celebrate it.

Woke up to my girlfriend screaming at me to wake up. She said the bathroom toilet line snapped at the tank and water flooded the bathroom and back bedroom. Spent 2 hours (and many towels) mopping and sopping, frantically calling the landlord at 4:30 am.

Finally got a hold of him and all he said was “just soak it up, open the windows and turn a fan on. Oh yeah, buy a new water line.” Now, I realize it’s horrible timing and no place is open or anything, but don’t you think he’d want to come over and assess the damage? It’s not like he lives a state away (right around the corner).

Anyway, it’s being taken care of now but that’s not how I wanted to start my day.

I work for a commercial landlord whose a very wealthy guy but incredibly frugal..

He has me speak to all tenants and he has me follow that “it’s not our problem” approach which I hate and makes me very uncomfortable.

Glad you got. It sorted

That’s gotta be tough… you probably don’t really have entirely separate locations where you can keep things, either physically or digitally.

I think all your ideas sound great, actually! You just have to resist the urge to log into that other user account at midnight if you have something important going on at work.

I wish I could help you more but A) I have not fully entered the “workforce” and do not anticipate being a project manager at this stage, and B) This just seems like a tricky problem to solve. I’m sure there are ways though!

Taking my Gorgeous girlfriend to Gabriola Island BC for a two day trip next weekend. I'm beyond excited. I'm brining some card games and reprovisioned my Plex server so we'll have some old school TV shows to watch

Although I can't imagine it'd be much worse than WI! (Although, of course, with the vagaries of weather from state to state, it might be much colder in MN than WI at that particular point in time.)

My mother lived in the Twin Cities for a couple of multi year stints when she was young. I think there was a lot she liked--although winter was not one of those things! But even years later, she'd talk about some of the cultural things. It must have been a horrible shock moving from Minneapolis to a city that was a cultural wasteland in the mid-1970s.

I also once lived in Minneapolis, although since we moved when I was only about 4, I don't remember much... But part of me does wonder what my life would have looked like if my parents had ended up staying there.

Anyhow, I am thinking about what are good strategies there are for explaining the need for rough drafts and that it is an important part of the writing process. This is what is on my mind.
He's probably too young too appreciate this, but I remember hearing of a professor who had a sign that said something like "Shakespeare's First Draft: 'Should I kill myself? Final Draft: To be or not to be?'"

Then something you and your son's teacher might not want him to hear about... (And this probably didn't amuse my high school English teacher when I brought the topic up...) But Rex Stout (most known as the writer of the Nero Wolfe mystery novels) apparently did very minimal editing on his books--the first draft is said to be pretty much the last draft. Stout was a pretty successful author despite this. This raises an interesting thought: how different writers can take such wildly varied approaches to the craft. The first draft is the last draft vs. the first draft is only the first of many to come. Then there is pen vs typewriter vs computer vs dictation. And so on.

Iirc, the Twin Cities has an extensive system of tunnels between buildings (second-floor, over the surface streets) in the downtown (Winnipeg has a similar system, although it’s underground). You could roam the DT area without a coat.

Winnipeg really enchanted me. Those underground tunnels were lined with retail, restaurants, snack stands, wine shops, etc, and I daydreamed of having a downtown apartment, going underground to walk to a job, then picking up groceries/wine while walking back home at the end of the day, rather than scraping the ice off windshields to drive to work on icy streets, freezing the whole time, like I did in all of the places I grew up/spent my career. Builds character, I guess…

Too easy! :D My grandpa always said you haven't lived until you have to dig yourself out of a blizzard which at this point, Ive had to do twice now.

It does sound wonderful though. To be young and single and free to roam underground labyrnths of food and wine. The grass is always greener on the other side. :)

Yanno the funny thing is while I was trying to get the point across to my 3rd grader and rather terribly I'll add, I was thinking on the inside that I'm exactly this sort of writer. The first draft is the best draft as far as I am concerned. As an adult, I absolutely do additional drafts but those are for grammatical or spelling corrections mostly or subtle refinement of a thought. The guts stay the same. Anyways, the point my son was making, as someone who genuinely enjoys writing and puting thoughts to paper, I didn't exactly fault him for.

FYI: I want this on a T-shirt "shakespeare's First Draft: "Should I kill myself?" Final Draft: To be or not to be?"

LOL'd at that :D

PSA: Within 2 weeks for Venmo & PayPal users, Oct-2025 end:
Opt out of letting your info be searchable.
Too many ways people hack your data these days.
I got the below in email, it's legit.

Hi Michael,
We’re excited to share that starting in November 2025, Venmo users and PayPal users will be able to pay each other in the U.S. and worldwide. That means that PayPal users will be able to find and pay you using your phone number, and later by using your email address.
If you’d like to be searchable, no action is needed. If you’d like to limit how PayPal users find you, you can adjust your settings here or in the Venmo app under Settings > Privacy > Find me.
We’re also adding ways for Venmo users to search for other Venmo profiles. Today, you can search by name or username only. Starting in November, you’ll be able to search for Venmo profiles by phone number, and later by email address.
If you prefer not to let other Venmo users find you by your phone number or email address, you can adjust your settings here or in the Venmo app under Settings > Privacy > Find me.
We’ll be updating our Privacy Statement to reflect these updates. You can review it here to learn more about how we handle your personal information and the choices available to you.
Thanks for being a Venmo customer!

I have never broadcast my payments to others. I never understood why people would want this, but if they do, that’s fine by me.

I didn’t know the find me options were there. Thank you for pointing this out and posting 😀

That is infuriating. It’s like the Instagram map (which I also disable). All of these things are on by default.

Interestingly enough, I don’t see this feature in my settings (this is on the Venmo app), so it might not have reached me yet, but when it does, I will turn it off right away.

I've told my kids and they set their setting to private.

Other friends who blast public all their Venmo transactions, for "fun" I'll like them and comment at times ...
Money transactions should not be social stuff, IMO.

I want this on a T-shirt

Easily done these days! For example:

(there are many places to get as few as one or two "trade show giveaway" items made with your own graphics or text, I just happen to have used VistaPrint in the past)

Thanks for this tip, Mike! I just went into PayPal, which I use very rarely, and after some hunting around finally found the data and privacy settings, and was able to adjust them (I think). In a couple of weeks at the end of October I'll check again to be sure, since that's when they will actually be implementing the new settings structure.

I don't use Venmo so no problems with needing to change settings there.

Just saw the Dance Series performance in the college's art gallery tonight. I've never been to a performance like that, it was really cool. All the musicians were improvising, and the dancers moved throughout the three rooms. The audience was really one with the performance—sometimes it was as if I was performing with them. There were a few moments when the dancers (who were also improvising) got about an inch from me. Also, one of the performers was playing an alpenhorn, and about halfway through the performance she started taking it apart and handing the pieces to different sections of the audience. By that point, the audience had sort of congregated in a few different places. So we all had different sections of the alpenhorn, and she'd come around and blow through them, each sounding a lot different (smaller sections quieter and more delicate-sounding). And then there were all the paintings and sculptures in the gallery itself, which I neglected to look at because I was so immersed in the music/dancers.
