Just booked a trip to the Twin Cities next year. It’s at the end of February so it will be cold, but that was the only time I could swing it. I’m excited to visit—I’ve never been before.
I know that feeling although I do look forward to the time off work at Christmas as the phone and emails go quiet.
It’s got me thinking of ways to separate my work and home life. I’m self employed project manager so I only have 1 set of devices and very often find myself being text or emailed at all times which drives me mad..
I’m thinking of separate user accounts on laptop a work email and a new phone so I can fully switch off.. any tips to avoid a new phone? Do focus modes work?
So I have a separate MBP for work. In the evenings I just leave it on the stand next to my Mac Mini set up in my study. But for time off and weekends I tend to put it away so it’s out of sight.I know that feeling although I do look forward to the time off work at Christmas as the phone and emails go quiet.

Woke up to my girlfriend screaming at me to wake up. She said the bathroom toilet line snapped at the tank and water flooded the bathroom and back bedroom. Spent 2 hours (and many towels) mopping and sopping, frantically calling the landlord at 4:30 am.
Finally got a hold of him and all he said was “just soak it up, open the windows and turn a fan on. Oh yeah, buy a new water line.” Now, I realize it’s horrible timing and no place is open or anything, but don’t you think he’d want to come over and assess the damage? It’s not like he lives a state away (right around the corner).
Anyway, it’s being taken care of now but that’s not how I wanted to start my day.
That’s gotta be tough… you probably don’t really have entirely separate locations where you can keep things, either physically or digitally. It’s got me thinking of ways to separate my work and home life. Although I can't imagine it'd be much worse than WI! (Although, of course, with the vagaries of weather from state to state, it might be much colder in MN than WI at that particular point in time.)Just booked a trip to the Twin Cities next year. He's probably too young too appreciate this, but I remember hearing of a professor who had a sign that said something like "Shakespeare's First Draft: 'Should I kill myself? Final Draft: To be or not to be?'"Anyhow, I am thinking about what are good strategies there are for explaining the need for rough drafts and that it is an important part of the writing process. This is what is on my mind.
Ah, one joy of fountain pens: the times when one's fingers that look like one just strangled a Smurf!Spent the afternoon acquiring blue fingers.
I have been fine-tuning some nibs in Wing Sung fountain pens to be as good as those in my Pilot Custom pens.
Iirc, the Twin Cities has an extensive system of tunnels between buildings (second-floor, over the surface streets) in the downtown (Winnipeg has a similar system, although it’s underground). You could roam the DT area without a coat.Just booked a trip to the Twin Cities next year. It’s at the end of February so it will be cold, but that was the only time I could swing it. Too easy!Iirc, the Twin Cities has an extensive system of tunnels between buildings (second-floor, over the surface streets) in the downtown (Winnipeg has a similar system, although it’s underground). You could roam the DT area without a coat.
Winnipeg really enchanted me. Those underground tunnels were lined with retail, restaurants, snack stands, wine shops, etc, and I daydreamed of having a downtown apartment, going underground to walk to a job, then picking up groceries/wine while walking back home at the end of the day, rather than scraping the ice off windshields to drive to work on icy streets, freezing the whole time, like I did in all of the places I grew up/spent my career. Builds character, I guess…
Yanno the funny thing is while I was trying to get the point across to my 3rd grader and rather terribly I'll add, I was thinking on the inside that I'm exactly this sort of writer. The first draft is the best draft as far as I am concerned. As an adult, I absolutely do additional drafts but those are for grammatical or spelling corrections mostly or subtle refinement of a thought. The guts stay the same. Anyways, the point my son was making, as someone who genuinely enjoys writing and puting thoughts to paper, I didn't exactly fault him for. He's probably too young too appreciate this, but I remember hearing of a professor who had a sign that said something like "Shakespeare's First Draft: 'Should I kill myself? Final Draft: To be or not to be?'"
Then something you and your son's teacher might not want him to hear about... (And this probably didn't amuse my high school English teacher when I brought the topic up...) But Rex Stout (most known as the writer of the Nero Wolfe mystery novels) apparently did very minimal editing on his books--the first draft is said to be pretty much the last draft. Stout was a pretty successful author despite this. This raises an interesting thought: how different writers can take such wildly varied approaches to the craft. The first draft is the last draft vs. the first draft is only the first of many to come. Then there is pen vs typewriter vs computer vs dictation. And so on.
I have never broadcast my payments to others. I never understood why people would want this, but if they do, that’s fine by me.PSA: Within 2 weeks for Venmo & PayPal users, Oct-2025 end:

Too many ways people hack your data these days.
I got the below in email, it's legit.
Hi Michael,
We’re excited to share that starting in November 2025, Venmo users and PayPal users will be able to pay each other in the U.S. and worldwide. That means that PayPal users will be able to find and pay you using your phone number, and later by using your email address.
If you’d like to be searchable, no action is needed. If you’d like to limit how PayPal users find you, you can adjust your settings here or in the Venmo app under Settings > Privacy > Find me.
We’re also adding ways for Venmo users to search for other Venmo profiles. Today, you can search by name or username only. Starting in November, you’ll be able to search for Venmo profiles by phone number, and later by email address.
If you prefer not to let other Venmo users find you by your phone number or email address, you can adjust your settings here or in the Venmo app under Settings > Privacy > Find me.
We’ll be updating our Privacy Statement to reflect these updates. You can review it here to learn more about how we handle your personal information and the choices available to you.
Thanks for being a Venmo customer!

That is infuriating. It’s like the Instagram map (which I also disable). All of these things are on by default.PSA: Within 2 weeks for Venmo & PayPal users, Oct-2025 end:

I've told my kids and they set their setting to private.I have never broadcast my payments to others. I never understood why people would want this, but if they do, that’s fine by me.
I didn’t know the find me options were there. Thank you for pointing this out and posting 😀
I want this on a T-shirt
I think I'm done buying computers for the time being. I had my stint with my Lenovo gaming laptop, but it just wasn't practical to use.Might buy an Alienware Laptop.. really wanting to play killing floor, Battlefield etc.
I couldn’t agree more!I've told my kids and they set their setting to private.
Other friends who blast public all their Venmo transactions, for "fun" I'll like them and comment at times ...
Money transactions should not be social stuff, IMO.
