I bought another Raspberry Pi (already have 2 others) to setup a MediaWiki at home. I already have a MediaWiki in a virtual machine on the Mac mini (2014 version). But the Mac mini doesn't like to run a VM for a long time and runs low on RAM and gets sluggish. So I only booted the VM when I wanted to get to my information in the Wiki.

So I bought this Raspberry Pi to host the wiki so I can leave it running all the time and have access to it on my network.

Right now I'm installing Raspbian on it which doesn't take too long.

What's on my mind is 9th game of world chess championship... first eight have all been draws. So anyway I opened a thread on it over in Current Events... thinking I finally found a non political current event. Then I remembered chess is always political. Oh well. Anyway it's over there with a few links. Today's game 9, already underway.

Yes, I have been reading about the chess championship.

Well they're into the sparsely populated reaches of chess history now, with a ninth straight draw, although it took them awhile to shake hands on it. So we must wait to see who eventually errs or leads the other to make an error that costs more than landing a draw.

A ninth straight draw? That must be some sort of record.

I don't know... there are so many "records" tracked in chess, as in other sports as well I suppose. Some of the ones in chess seem pretty arcane.

But nine straight games gone to draw in a world championship might be a record or at least in recent times. Usually someone messes up by now, if only by making a distracted move, losing mental balance upon realizing it, and then perhaps ending up intimidated by the clock into making another error while trying to figure a way past the other player's immediately having taken advantage of the first slip.

That sort of pressure is what can make any championship after game 12 interesting, as the remaining games are time-constrained in ways beyond the classical time controls of the first 12.

But going down that path might not be as suspenseful as are the standard games: The Norwegian is said to be way, way better than the American in the outcome of blitz games...

My bed is also on my mind, because dog alarm = no sleep. I stumbled out the door this a.m. Also, mom.

At least today is my Friday and only four more hours between work and the commute home.

I get the mum stuff, really I do.

Been there, done that, bought that t-shirt etc.

I think I may have advised you to accept small favours or offers of help when they come.

Well enjoy the long weekend. Try to find some time for yourself (a nice Shaw Brothers DVD) and don't over eat Turkey!

My other top tip is avoid the shops this weekend altogether!

I certainly know you are in the trenches with the mom stuff. I may have staved off eldest sister bailing on mom because of doing so much, which is good since middle sis won’t do squat.

You most certainly did advise on accepting small favors which I have. :)

It is good that eldest sis and I came to understanding, she was slightly shocked that mom was aggressive with me as I was escorting mom to sister’s car yesterday (in that she did not think mom was like that with me too).

@Apple fanboy - thanks. I intend to sleep (hope get you some too tonight), and do whatever I feel like in between tending to mom and chores.

No turkey this year, I used to love watching our cats get progressively more sleepy and full as I gave them turkey throughout the day (as if cats need to sleep more than they do).
Much obliged.

On my mind now: heard my former junior supervisor was let go from my previous job. She is a wonderful person who made a good life for herself, despite fighting cancer for the last two years. That leaves only the head of my department still at that job. I cannot imagine how she feels about losing her “lieutenant” and now being entirely alone. When the head retires, the NY office will be devoid of our department. Dang.

I probably shouldn’t say this as your still at work, but after moving offices all day, I’ve just crawled into bed.

Enjoy the weekend.

Also, make a point of cutting out whatever chores or tasks (irrespective of the call of tradition, unless you like the tradition) may fall to you; delegate them or discard them. Anything which adds to stress - cut it, cull it, discard it, delegate it.

None of us much cared for turkey - it was the idea, rather than the reality, we liked; thus, for years, I have abandoned turkey at Christmas, serving a roast chicken (organic, free range, with a few extra bits and pieces) instead.

And, I'll have baked ham on a different day.

What's on my mind? I'm scared. I really want this new macbook pro 2018,but the kernel panic problem and ESPECIALLY the crackling speaker one are making me so scared . I want to produce music on Logic and I can imagine giving all of my money for this laptop that maybe won't let me do my job. I've read your discussion on this amazing forum and I'm depressed.

Look if there is a problem Apple will sort it. Their customer service is legendary.

Also because a lot of people come to this site with a problem, it often appears that Apple are plagued with problems. That and the trend to find a problem with a product and add the word gate to it! Click bait videos etc!

I think you’ll find most people buy a machine and use it without issue. Buy Apple care to give you piece of mind.

It's called confirmation bias. When you're exposed to a minority projection of a problem your mind is hooked onto it being a bigger problem than it is. Personally, if I were producing music, I'd opt for a high end external DAC and a studio monitor setup. Not whatever DAC chip Apple uses and its pithy speakers.

That said, there's coil whine in some new Apples. So there's another problem, but it's not a wide ranging issue, and you really can't eliminate all of coil whine. Most of it, yes.

There are so many videos on youtube with the crackling speakers and so much comments of people who have them. The thread here i also more than 40 pages. It seems like just every single unit has it but maybe it does not happen so often . I didn't know about the coil whine one thou.. People are saying that even their 2nd replacement is the same. What's up with the 2018 models? This is crazy. I really don't know what to do. Maybe I shoud go with the 2017 models? Have you heard about any issues with those?

Re MBPs, rather than be frantic and "scared" (that is a strong verb to use for a computer) why not wait for around six months when Apple will more than likely have addressed this issue?

Is there a pressing reason, or imperative for you to purchase this machine now?

And why not raise this in the MBP section of the forum, which is specifically dedicated to discussions of that model?

FWIW, a mic on a cam will pickup faint sounds or amplify certain frequencies. In any case, the concept of Apple being a premium brand went out the window numerous years ago. You can advertise as premium, but the only thing that's premium is outer materials and your highly modified, albeit buggy OS.

Pretty sure it's a minor issue. I'd love to rag on the Toshiba SSD being the reason, but the truth is every brand is affected by coil whine. How well its insulated or mitigated matters. I've used Samsung and or Micron SSDs the most and they seem to exhibit the least noise. Since I use a PC most of the time, I tend to pick from brands I know put research into lessening the problem. I'll only buy video cards from one company rather than their competition, especially one who uses noisy fans and coil whine is present in every product they make in the non-mobo spectrum. Computer components are one section of the market where you get what you paid for. If you want a reliable, fast and powerful cruncher of a PC, be prepared to spend Apple-like money for one.

I'm expecting my next workstation to set me back $3-4K.

Currently thinking about and searching around for ways to automatically backup Raspbian OS. I made a thread about it here, in case anyone reading this might have some good ideas.
