I don’t decorate either. And I don’t miss the mess!
It occurs to me that I could actually put up a live Christmas tree this year, as it's the first year in a long time I wouldn't have at least one cat trying to help me decorate it, but I gave my tree ornaments away to nextgen at least five years ago.
When both kitties had passed the age of 12 I thought to try a tree again --too lazy to chase mice might mean too lazy to climb a Christmas tree? -- but no, and the two of them immediately seemed to figure it was their Christmas present and went about climbing it. I ended up that year with a bare tree and just some mini lights in the windows.
After that I settled for a foot-tall antique fake tree the proprietor of the old general store in a nearby village had found in the attic of the place and given me as a Christmas present after using it one year in her seasonal display in the store's front window. I took to putting that on a worktable in my studio, made a few paper-backed fabric ornaments for it and closed the studio door at night to keep those ever-curious Santa's helpers out of the place.
I still miss that pair of cats terribly since they hung out here for 20 years, but I must say it's been a whole lot of fun (and efficient) just to leave things out in my studio that they'd have been all over in any other season of my finishing up home-brew gifts and wrapping them. They never quite got around to that "mission accomplished" stage of cat careers even if near the end the tasks they undertook were all merely of their own choice.
