That’s the joy of not celebrating Christmas. No gifts to give or reserve. Glad I’m out of it!

Christmas gifts.....you know, my dad gave me money to go buy what I wanted and put it under the tree. Not so much sursprise for me, but I wasn’t disappointed, and it could always surprise the others.

Why follow any rules, if they cause stress, right.

What’s been weighing heavily on my mind lately is I think I have to go back to taking an SSRI again. I blamed my anxiety on work for years but now that I’m retired it’s way worse. Working kept my mind occupied, I guess. Now I have all day to stress over nothing. In the past I always found exercise fixed my stress. It’s no longer working. S

Thank you.

Her recent bout of pneumonia has really knocked her out, and she is failing somewhat.

My, I hope she’s comfortable and the pneumonia is under control...and the risk reinfection is minimized. I don’t need to tell you this, but sometimes all we can do is to take things week-by-week, day-by-day, or hour-by-hour. Best wishes to everyone there.

Thank you.

Today, we have had the doctor visit, the public health nurse, and the hospice nurse (a well built gentleman who has seen her a few times).

Using the marathon as a metaphor for her condition, I think that she may have entered the stadium for that final lap, - a stadium which has been visible for the best part of the past two weeks (or that was the metaphor my brother had used - he had asked 'where is she in the marathon?' - when we discussed this matter last week).

So this is my second crummy Xmas, not going home as I spent for my Mom to come here - and last Xmas saw me go home to be with Mom as Dad was suffering his last illness to pass away over the holidays. 2016 I stayed here because I was planning to go home for Easter but then got canned from the old job end of January.

On the bright side nearly done budget reporting will take a break too clean up the office, check my figures then head out to drink some Xmas brew and etc.

Edit: sorry again @Scepticalscribe that mirrors my experience last year. :(

Sorry to hear this. Just take comfort in the fact she is warm and in her own home. If she hadn’t received the care she has in the last few years she wouldn’t have made it this far.
And be kind to yourself as well!

Echoing AFB, yes, SS, be kind to yourself and take comfort in the fact that over the past several years you have been able to provide for your mother so well and that she has been able to remain in her own home with excellent, loving and thoughtful care.....she has been very fortunate in that regard. I know only too well how difficult this kind of situation is, and you have my empathy.....

Thank you, all, for your kind words and good wishes. They are very much appreciated.

Know that the end was peaceful - utterly peaceful in a wonderfully restful, easy, and comfortable - an almost clichéd - manner. If a death could be perfect, this was.

Because the final decline was so swift, it took all of us by surprise.

One of my brothers arrived mid afternoon - by which stage she was deteriorating - fast - very rapidly - by the hour. The other arrived fifteen minutes before she passed.

By then, with all three of us holding her hands, I said to her that "we're all here"; the first time I said it, she stirred. I repeated it - but very clearly, my brother subsequently remarked - as she seemed to want it confirmed.

Thus, I repeated "we're all here" (I couldn't bring myself to say "you can go now if you wish"), and she puffed slightly, - I had a strong sense that her ears were cocked, and breathed out softly, and that was it.

My splendid cheesemonger dropped some cheeses and salamis and cold cuts, two loaves of ciabatta and a few bottles of wine out to the house.
