I completely understand this, but with all due respect, I think there are other ways to calm kids down than an iPad at the dinner table. I'm just trying to remember what my parents did in that situation, cause I did NOT have an iPad at 6 years old... I also was not a rowdy kid by any stretch, so idk. Honestly, I probably just sat there, I don't remember.

But hey, I'm glad you found something that worked.
I didn’t have an iPad either at 6 years old but then my parents rarely ate out because I was not the best behaved child. Maybe in hindsight I should have sat my kids at a different table and let them annoy everyone instead of keeping them quiet. I certainly wasn’t going to sit there and let them ruin it for me at the time, it was my holiday too.

I didn’t have an iPad until I was middle aged. But that’s because they hadn’t been invented.

We rarely ate out as a family though. Only if we were on holiday.

On the rare occasion I do eat out these days it’s usually late or the sort of restaurant that people don’t really take their kids to.

On my mind is a photography show I’m setting up for tomorrow and then at until Tuesday. Just finished packing my stuff after packing the van up earlier. Will be an early start and a late finish Tuesday night.
Will most likely miss the England game then. Could be a blessing given how we have played so far!

When I was eating my cheeseburger combo meal today, I noticed the dad of the family across from me, not teach his child about being polite and moving out of the way, but he jumped over her onto the plastic bench seat. Later, the parents left the restaurant with the kids still finishing their food, including the toddler in a high chair. The older one cleared the table and took care of his siblings but gaaaaahhhhhh, what kind of parents do that? Unfortunately, I'm sure it's too many here.

They hadn’t been invented until I was 28 either, the closest thing I had as a child was a Game Gear and a Nintendo GameBoy, but that was when I was 10. I couldn’t really take a Spectrum 128k to a restaurant.

Took my 5,1 Mac Pro, PowerBook G3 Lombard (that I never got to work, even after replacing the hard drive), and 2011 15" MacBook Pro to the recycler today. Figured they aren't really worth much anyway, so I'm fine just recycling them. The 2011 just had tons of issues, so I'll probably end up getting some other MacBook as a secondary one--maybe a 2012.

I've also posted my M1 MBA up for sale on eBay, so hopefully that sells relatively soon (it's got 5 watchers, so I'm a little hopeful at least). I want a laptop with a bigger display, that's the main reason I want to replace it. It's had a good four-year run. I've got my huge LG Ultrafine monitor here with my Windows machine, and I've got my iMac back in Wisconsin, so a large laptop would be really nice, too.

I still have my mid-2012 quad-core i7 MacBook Pro. It works quite well and the discrete graphics hardware helps, but it's better in winter when I need a heater for the room. My M1 MacBook Air seems to handle most anything. I wouldn't be ready for another until the M6 version. This AI nonsense is likely going to be a mess, like the dotcom business.

I'm only 31, so I had a Gameboy and all that stuff as a kid but my siblings and I were absolutely not allowed to bring them into restaurants, or really anywhere else for that matter. The placemats and crayons were absolutely crucial for us.
I'm old enough (barely) that technology wasn't a central part of my life when I was young. I didn't have an iPad till I was 9 years old (it was an iPad Air 1st gen). Back then, I'd use it to watch a movie on the plane or on a road trip, but not for much else. I NEVER brought it into a restaurant or anything though.

And honestly I hated the crayons at restaurants, I'd always push them off to the side.

I was waiting for someone to say "You had place mats! You went to the fancy restaurants!" 😆

Have to record a video for someone, and I’m not kidding… I look and sound THE WORST!! Like, an actual atrocity on both fronts. UGH!

Nah, I'll just suck it up for now. Ironically, I looked decent from about 9-15 years old, but since then, I swear, my appearance has degenerated. At least I can talk more clearly now! So I guess there's a trade-off

I feel the same every time I need to record a video. On the bright side, apart from these recordings, I don't spend time thinking about how I look or sound. So at least it has a limited effect. Once you're done with it, you'll just go on with your life.

If it’s any consolation I also avoid recording videos or voiceovers.

I just hate that. I’ll always let someone else do that if at all possible.

I cannot stress enough the importance of proper lighting when it comes to videos/photography. It's more challenging with video since the lighting can change as you move about. And composition. Good composition is even more important than good lighting. Crop out any extraneous background, include only what adds interest to or supports the main subject.

As for audio, mike up. If it's just one person, you can use a wireless lavalier mic. Most video recorders have a mic input plug. For multiple people, a boom mic is in order. If you're poor or on a shoe string budget like me, you can make your own ghetto boom mic with a broom stick, some tape and a microphone.😅
