I don't know anyone that uses it in the states. I'm not young, not involved in crime, and don't live in Asia (I hear it is heavily used there). So I'm just am old fuddy duddy.
I’m almost 50 and use it to communicate with my friends in Europe, freelance clients in the US, my graduate student classmates, and my adult ESL students. So, yes, you are indeed a fuddy duddy, but please don’t try to broadly generalize that those of us who aren’t young and don’t live in Asia would presumably be guilty of crimes if we use it. Not cool.

Weird thread.

I am all for giving people choice. Don’t know why some people here are so upset that WhatsApp even exists, or that it is transitioning to Apple Silicon. This was long overdue. You don’t want to use it? Continue to use the exact same messaging app you were using.

Not because nobody around you uses it that nobody on the planet is.

The beta is not good with emoji - when I click on the emoji button a new window comes up where I have to double click an emoji to use it then close the window once I’m done!

Curious on the reasons you think WA is better than iMessage.

I use Whatsapp to communicate with cross platform users (Android) and for work mostly.

For my private connections I use iMessage, because
  1. The photos and videos are shared are high quality, uncompressed - Whatsapp is really bad in this even though you select higher quality in settings
  2. Skeuomorphic design of iMessage is much softer on the eye and easier to use for me.
  3. WhatsApp being part of Meta is something that makes me switch to iMessage at any chance I get.
  4. Too many scam/spam messages - this is really annoying.
  5. Whatsapp calls are buggy, uses too many system resources and Facetime/FT Audio are far superior here.
Several reasons. The biggest and most important is that I have one place where I can message everyone on my Mac. Can't do that with Android users.

I travel to Italy every summer. At this point I could use a dual eSIM/eSIM & physical SIM on my iPhone 13 and it shouldn't be too cumbersome, but it's still easier to have one messaging app tied to my number.

I like being able to see the status of when people were last active.

Phone calls by and large have been no problem internationally.

I get far more spam messages via Messages versus WhatsApp.

Because WhatsApp is crap and we are forced to use it as they are the pioneers or whatever , and both family, friends and work rely on this ****** platform that is extremely slow to adopt new standards , bring enhancements and features, and optimize their applications (in terms of efficiency , for cpu and battery)

WhatsApp European user

Hopefully this means an iPad app isn't far away.

The UI in this beta is awful, but at least it performs a lot better than the Intel version does.

Was buggy as hell. Had to log in, which logged out my other Mac. Then crashed twice. UI ugly etc.
Uninstalled with 5 mins and back to Appstore version.

Here is your answer about "nobody uses WhatsApp":

WhatsApp is by far the most (and maybe only) used messaging app in all Latin America (Chile, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela).

In think in Central America (Caribbean) is the same.

Here no one knows about iMessage (apart, the iPhone has very low use share compared to Android; must be 20%-80%). Telegram, Signal and other minor apps are rarely used.

So, the hundreds of millions of users of WhatsApp not enlisted anywhere else are here.

I hate it. But, everyone uses here. Is like WeChat in China.

About the Apple Sillicon-native: I installed it. Works but it looks very unfinished. I'm interested in battery usage, since the Intel-based version very bad at that.

I don't know why people assume that something they don't personally use must be bad.
Are you serious, man? That's Apple's entire motto and this forum is one hell of an example of it. We're also talking about a company that literally had a guy hired to turn Apple consumers and the brand itself into a cult (Guy Kawasaki). The dude hilariously released a book called 'Cult' a few years back... LOL, dude's so out of touch.

Facebook Meta is one of the last companies you should trust your personal information and conversations with. Use any other messaging app but WhatsApp or Messenger.

I’m lost why What’sApp gets such positive promotion here on the regular?

Apple Messages, Signal and plain old text works for me.

Which do you use instead?

Whatsapp has an established user base, especially outside of the US. That makes it really hard to move away from because you won't find your friends on other apps.

Also I can no longer reply to individual messages on this Beta version, so I am going back to the current release until these things are sorted

Oh cool. Cant wait to give my data to Suckerberg even faster.
JK. I took 5 minutes online to find a better solution.

I can't get a device linking code to appear, and the bug reporter does nothing. I guess I'll wait until it's out of "beta"

WhatsApp is end to end encrypted , and has been for a while , way before iMessages(iCloud) which just got end to end , lol

Not sure what you're talking about... iMessages has always had end to end encryption.

Yes, if you had "iCloud Backup" turned on and had "Messages in iCloud" turned on, then a copy of your "Message in iCloud" key was backed up along with your messages - which was absolutely necessary in order to decrypt those messages to restore them back onto your devices.

However, with Advanced Data Protection turned on, your entire iCloud backup is now encrypted with a key that stays on device.

They claim it is , you think they’re lying ? I dunno

If end to end encrypted it means they don’t have access to it . Same for apple in iOS 16.3

End to end encrypted does not mean "They don't have access to it."

It means, that when your message is being transmitted from your device to the recipients, no one has access to it. This is because it is encrypted with a key that only exists on your device and the recipients device. Ergo, it cannot by intercepted while being transmitted. E2E encryption of messages being transmitted between devices has nothing to do with how data is used/abused on device, where it can be collected and sent to a remote server.

The messages you send and receive are still readable by the app (WhatsUp). Which means Meta can still mine (scan) your messages on your device and send that data to their own servers. Just because a developer says your messages are end to end encrypted, it does not guarantee that the app (developer) is not scanning through your messages and collecting data.

Yeah, except it's not. Espousing the virtues of your products does not mean you think everything else is "bad". If you feel someone else's bragging is to make you look or feel bad, that's mainly because of your own insecurities.

But sticking to the point, do I think WhatsApp is "bad"? I can't say for sure, because I've never used it, and never will use a service/app from a company like Meta, whose vast majority of revenue comes from advertising, which is value-based on how much data they can collect from their users.

No one outside of Europe seems to use it for the most part. Why Europe seems to use it so much is beyond me.
Why shouldn't I use it? 99% of my contact have WhatsApp. Even iPhone users use it.

BTW, right now we have an international diplomatic scandal between Chile and Argentina because of a leaked meeting audio.

The point is this was related to a previous WhatsApp protest audio that was sent by the Chilean Secretary of Foreign Affairs to the Argentinian one about a cancelled port infrastructure project.

This is the level of trust on WhatsApp security in this country: used even at a government level. 🤣

Simple. It’s multi platform. iMessage is only iPhones.
Yea, everyone I know will still use the text app since all plans in America have unlimited text for like the last 10 years. I’ve never met anyone who uses what’s app but maybe it really is just Americans who don’t use it, idk

Same here with the unlimited texts but isnt the green bubble SMS? Which means it’s much slower than iMessage. How does that work in a group chat with iphone and android users? Surely if conversation is flowing quickly the iphone users messages are instant and the androids have to wait a few seconds for each message to send. Seems a bit weird to me.

WhatsApp just doesnt have that problem.
