Apple Pencil on Official Apple Store on Canadian Amazon is very low in stock.

Edit: It's offering used ones. They aren't selling new ones anymore there.

I'm confused about this "variant of iPadOS 17.4."

The firmware is already out (released early March) and there's no specific features tied to iPadOS unless I'm missing something. Maybe Apple has something special for the new iPad Pros... that is the only conclusion I can draw from it.
Maybe it includes proper external display support and windowing. I'd happily pay £££ for a new iPad Pro if that is the case... ;)

I mean surely there WILL be ever so slight variations in the shipping 17.4 for the new iPads (ie. like a 17.4.1/2) to handle changes to the position of the FaceID camera calculations, differences in processors, cellular connectivity, slight resolution changes on the 13 inch version, OLED burn in protection schemes, changes to interface with the newly designed Magic Keyboard etc. All stuff that is "invisible" to the user but absolutely necessary for proper functionality.

Whow, 13 inches would be a massive disappointment, I must say. It seemed like this was going to be the moment when a slightly larger iPad would finally emerge.

For me, Stage Manager on my portable monitor works great... haven't had any issues thus far.

Completely understand that. But as @kjwamlex pointed out... those kinds of developments should have happened a long time ago.

Given that iPadOS 17.4 was released earlier this month. And we are all here just speculating...

So the new iPad Pros are being held hostage by the software? That doesn't sound like anything new. I've been especially itching for these new iPad Pros since I gave my 2020 12.9" to my sister in September after her iPad 7 was bricked and became a vegetable. Since then, I've missed having an iPad and spent the time saving my money and now I'm starting to lose patience with Apple. I want to at least know when the iPad Pros are released so I can preorder my full spec 13" M3 model and not risk it getting delayed by several more weeks and months on top of that

Yes but it's a little convincing nevertheless. I guess we shall see. I don't know his mindset, but it's possible he feels he needs to supply answers, which can lead to creative thinking.

If it’s from Gurman it isn’t convincing in the slightest! Do yourself a favour and ignore him, he’s good on product specs but that’s all. I highly expect new iPad Pros this month. And as Apple rarely hold in person events these days it can be at anytime.

Based on how it has worked with Apple products in the past... you have one main team that works on iOS/iPadOS that targets development towards ALREADY SHIPPING PRODUCTS and then smaller more secretive teams that work on iOS/iPadOS changes geared toward UNRELEASED PRODUCTS. The problem is their development is NOT aligned (ie. 17.4 may have been developed without the team having specific knowledge of the new products) UNTIL Apple announces, or is just about to announce the new iPad Pro devices. I for example wouldn't be surprised if the current beta software on the new iPad Pros is a variant of 17.2 or 17.3 the internal team worked up for it, and only now with the release of 17.4 is the product being revealed to the main iPadOS team, and now they are working to incorporate the private changes in their internal version of the OS into the shipping code. Much of this is to maintain secrecy so that 17.1, 17.2, 17.3 and even 17.4 earlier this month would not contain clues about the pending products as much as possible.

Exactly, apple could get them in the stores and have someone update them overnight.

Clearly when iOS 17.4 was being developed, those developers were aware of the new products as new landscape Face ID setup localizations were in the iOS 17.4 beta. So... it still doesn't really line up.

Edit: Add source

Hey look, since iOS 17.4 Beta 1!
