height adjustment would be nice

I could see that being useful. Interestingly, when the first iMac G5 came out, there was an interview (I don't know if I'll be able to find it :( ) in which an Apple exec was asked about this, and they stated that they had done market research and found that, while the iMac G4 had height adjustability, no one was really making use of it. I wonder how true that is? I've used the height adjusters on external Dell displays before, but primarily so I could put my iBook in front of and below the display.

the keyboard and mouse seem a bit outdated for a system that advanced. Perhaps they will invent something better soon. Maybe a touchscreen imac.

Yes and no! Looks like it might be a a touch-sensitive keyboard. A user would choose between different kind of keyboards, create hotkeys and arrange their position.

To me the mouse looks really dated! I think a virtual touch pad would be more likely. Something that allows you just to use your fingers on a surface to scroll and left and right tap!

Voice activation will be much more defined and second nature.

It grieves me somewhat that Microsoft seem to be leading the way on new human interfacing methods.

Well lets just say they scream the most about it.
With Apple you never know what they are working on, up to the time they are done and ready to present a finished product.
I wouldn't put to much weight on what Microsux crows about, since they never had an original idea anyway.

No offence to the OP, but change for the sake of change is pointless. Every redesign of the iMac was to solve a particular problem, or adopt a compelling new technology. The current iMac design is about as minimalist as you can get. Any changes from here on will be minor cosmetic ones (thinner design, smaller bezel etc...)

No offence to you, but why would you think a design change is pointless? I am a PC user wanting to change to an iMac, but until they remove that god-awful thick chin I will stay using a PC with a screen that shows my work and documents rather than a thick wad of plastic.

And it isn't just me, this has been said hundreds of times before. And with Apple seemingly investing a lot of money into grabbing some disgruntled PC users, a change of the design to remove the chin can only be a good thing.

Yeah, but, then again an imac with a chin is prettier than most (if not all) windows boxes - even if you have to hide your shame by tucking it under your desk, whirring away.

i'm in a similar position, i hardly use a pc anymore, but i am waiting for apple to upgrade the imac range, if they make it better looking: great! but i'm more interested in processor upgrades.

You people are putting me off ordering an iMac today, which is a shame as I'd just psyched myself up!

Not really, if you have your unit under your desk you never see it - I couldn't care less if it was covered in pink polka dots, because with a 'windows setup' all you see is a big flat screen monitor with a thin 1cm edge. Just like you do with a Mac Pro.

Not a big fat wad of plastic.

Until...?

Tomorrow? :) Nah, personally I am waiting for a new design to be launched, must be in the next couple of months surely.

Even if a new one came out today I'd wait until CS3 is released as I will need to buy another copy of CS2 for Mac, if I wait I can just upgrade my PC version to Mac CS3.

However if i borough an imac only for them to bring out some sleek skinny sexy beast in 4 weeks time i'd be upset - so wait. Even if you get an old one still it will be much cheaper.

That sounds very much like the continuous 'I'll wait just that little bit longer' type of thought, that results in zero purchases! I think I've learnt that 'waiting' for new technology is a futile effort, as you'll always be a few months from something 'better'.

But thanks for your advice :)

I really think a new design in 2007 is doubtful.

Updates? Yes! Hopefully an update before too long, but Apple doesn't redesign things very often. Even the Mac Book Pro and Mac Book aren't exactly earth-shattering redesigns from iBooks and Powerbooks.

Furthermore, Apple seems to have a lot of focus other than computers right now. I guess it's possible they'd make it a tiny big thinner when they did an update or something, but I doubt it. I think we'll just see speed bumps/bigger hard drivers, etc. in 2007.

Of course, I wouldn't mind being wrong. I'd like to see a sleeker iMac, without so much chin, but I still find it a beautiful computer right now. I love mine, and I look forward to my next!

In defense of the chin

I also thought that the chin was the weakest point aesthetically, but i've since discovered that it is the perfect place for post-it notes. Now I don't know what I'd do without it.

I would just like to publicly kick my own ass for the last comment here. I've finally learnt that MS talk about it - Apple make it happen!

So your whole motive to get an iMac is for aesthetic reasons? If so, you will probably get tired of it pretty fast. I got my iMac for its function. I use a PC at work, and I can't wait till I'm back home working on my Mac. I don't even notice the "chin" at all, because.....I'm looking at my screen.

Like the other poster said, I'd rather have this "chin" than a huge box beside my desk with a bunch of wires hanging down. You tell me what would be more ugly.

Like you were saying, trying to keep up with the latest technology is futile. I'd just get the Mac now and enjoy it. Bought mine about 3 months ago, and I love it. Plus, even if something does make its debut in a couple of months, you can always sell your Mac (they hold their value pretty well, comparatively). And by that time, you will have a lot of experience with the Mac interface, which that alone would make your purchase worth it.

As great as an iMac redesign would be, I wish there was a regular tower & monitor setup similar to the MacPro but in the price range of the iMac. I can see the argument about not having wires everywhere, but it worries me having absolutely everything crammed together behind a screen. With my peecee I can get inside the thing if I need to.

No, my whole reason for getting a Mac is for performance and to use a nice OS - having said that, yes, as with most things in life, aesthetics comes into it, and I am certainly not prepared to outlay £1000 on something I find revolting to look at.

Although contrary to you questioning me buying for aesthetics, I am sure you actually agree as you yourself state "I'd rather have this "chin" than a huge box beside my desk with a bunch of wires hanging down. You tell me what would be more ugly"

Not sure if you brought your PC this decade or not, but most of them sit on the floor these days - just like the Mac Pro does.

FWIW, as I type this reply, I see no wires and more importantly.. no wad of plastic.

i doubt they will get a new design for a couple years....just modifications.
They really have no reason to redesign it. Where as laptops change more frequently.
