the i5 is the same chip as what is in the MBP 13" and to be quite honest it feel sluggish in comparison to the i7 mini... i'd say get the i7 as you will never be able to do that upgrade yourself. and then upgrade ram and sad yourself and save some $$$ there.

most people don't buy a new PC every year, and so the upgrade meaning that the machine will last you an extra year is worth it. plus. mini really keep value well, and the resell on the i7 will definitely be higher than on the i5 so you'll recoup some of the initial $$$ there :D

Geekbench is a synthetic benchmark. The i7 doesn't equate to being twice as fast in the real world.

Go here if you want to see some useful comparisons: http://www.macworld.com/article/2013250/lab-tested-2012-mac-mini-gets-a-nice-speed-boost.html

They're not distinctly different. In fact, they have so much in common they're practically indistinguishable.

And looks do matter because not everyone needs or wants something designed to house and cool a quad-core CPU and a pair of 2.5" hard drives.

You really should consider a hackintosh. That way you'll get exactly what you want.... maybe.

Please don't - you will be disappointed with the gaming performance. The mini cannot game well at all with integrated graphics. If you are in the market for a desktop for gaming, make sure it has something like this in it: http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-PCI-..._3?ie=UTF8&qid=1385584058&sr=8-3&keywords=660

I do have experience in building gaming PCs (I built one myself, custom), but I really want something that is portable, yet it can game at the same time.

Probably a long distant dream but that would be fantastic.

Well a $2500 15" rMBP will do it :D

So build a small FF PC??

Hey guys,

I guess we're not gunna see the new Mac Mini Haswell before Xmas this year then? I was hoping to get one when I'm back home in the UK. Has anyone got any idea when/if they think it'll be released?

If it's not released for a while, do you think getting the 2012 Mini would be a massive mistake now, even if it was fully speced? I want to get it as soon as possible as my PC has self combusted and need one for my degree, so not really prepared to wait for months more.

It seemed many sources were fairly insistent about its release in 2013... a bit of a bummer really.

i would never pay the full price for 1 year old hardware that is guaranteed to get replaced soon.

however, since you actually need a working machine... i'd recommend waiting for the mac pro to become available (this month); a simultaneous, silent update to the mac mini is not unlikely. if that's not the case, buy the (base) 2012 mac mini and sell it with a bearable loss a few months later.

If you decide to not wait for the update, consider getting a refurbished system from Apple and save some money.

It's not the mini itself I want updated, but the BTO options. Bigger SSDs in particular.

If that doesn't happen then I'll probably just go for the Pro.

Not a mistake at all

It sounds like you need a new computer now, so get one.

When my 2005 Mini packed a sad I decided it was not worth repairing. I bought the early 2009 Mini (base model), which was current at the time, and plugged in the peripherals I had already. I was good to go the same day.

I am still using the same computer, and reckon it should be good for a while longer. Sure it may not have all the latest specs, but with 4GB of RAM added to the 1 GB it came with, it can run the latest software. It does all I want for work, communication, photography and the like.

Any new generation of Mini is likely to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

I don't understand some folks' obsession with the need to have the latest stuff, all tricked out to the max. In my humble opinion, they're just a bunch of retards.

I've got the mid-2009 model base spec and have put 8GB ram and a 256GB SSD in and it really is a remarkable machine, handling desktop publishing and photo/video software etc with ease. It's only now starting to get a bit sluggish with many apps open under Mountain Lion, so am trying Mavericks on a partition. I think I will buy the new model if and when it comes - but the Mini may well be discontinued of course.

Other than a gaming rig in 2012, I haven't bought an expensive new computer (Mac or PC) for personal use since October 2009, and that was a $1499 iMac. That's partly because of the economy, but mostly because the CPUs in tablets and small low cost computers have gotten that good.

CPUs … have gotten that good.

This is why you don't need a new mac mini and this is why they have not made one since 2012. When the sony super screens become the norm is when you need a new mini as the gpus won't be good enough.

A quad core 2012 mini with a 1080 screen will do almost anything well except for better gaming. So if you game you can have a pc and a mini in your ht. most of us do this and call it a day.
The gpu in the haswell is not good enough for a super pixel screen and

when this tv gets close to 1k not 3k

I will have to replace my quad core 2012. with better graphics. I am thinking 2015 summer and I am hoping for a mini with better gpu will exist by then.

Late 2013 rMBP are already running 4K TV at 30 Hz through HDMI and are only limited from 60 Hz by software. TB2 is fully capable of running 4K TV.

I went ahead and purchased a dual core mini from Amazon. I'm not taking the chance that Apple decides to go the rMBP route and makes it nearly impossible to make any upgrades. At least I'll be able to upgrade the memory and hard drive if I want.

I also ordered the Apple wireless keyboard. Does the keyboard have backlighting ?

No it doesn't. I just got a Mini a few weeks back and I am loving it!

Had to rant: No back lighting and no number pad on the apple wireless keyboard is, well, stupid.

For me the lack of a Num Pad isn't that big a deal because it cuts down on the width. As the previous poster mentioned their would be battery issues with a backlit keyboard which I myself forgot to realize.

I got the USP keyboard too. Number pad is about productivity. There should be an option for a wireless keyboard with a number pad. REALLY.

Also, my bluetooth keyboard for the pad is backlit and does not seem to have a very big battery.

is this 1995? number pads are a useless waste of space. by the way, back lighting is extremely uncommon amongst desktop keyboards.

It's 2013 and people still use computers for large volume number entry which a number pad is essential for.

I use the number pad everyday. When I showed up to my first job out of college, we didn't have computers but we sure had nice adding machines. You get very fast, very quick.
