Thanks for reminding me. Sign me up for a Haswell Mini. A quad-core Haswell with Iris graphics and a hybrid HDD would fit the bill real nicely.

I just bought the quad-core i7 Mac Mini and have been wondering if I purchased at the wrong time. Luckily, I have until January 7th to return it, since it falls within the holiday shopping time frame. The model you just described would be amazing.

i got tired of waiting and got a 2012 i7 two days ago :D The things is crazy fast... i love it.

Tragic!

Expected Iris graphics (+ "cooler" Haswell processor) are much better, PCIe SSD is impressive, Wi-Fi ac (nice to have!) and (much possibly...) TB2/DP2.0/USB3.1 and also, a higher RAM capacity (if redesigned)!!!

I don't really care whether a new Mac Mini comes...Q1or Q2 2014? It will be very welcome, especially if redesigned!!!

(There is a slight risk to confront a "small unpleasant freak"...but I hope APPLE will think positively!!!)

The new Mac mini will be ... whenever it comes out ... like the new Mac Pro, but just a slice of it.

Like so:

I'm hoping for two completely separate designs. Sticking with the current strategy of a single design to please multiple crowds is just a bad idea.

I'd go with one designed around the i7 quad-core chips from the rMBP, and a different one using ULV processors from the MBA. As for what they would like like, something similar to the new AirPort Extreme for the quad-core models and the Apple TV for smaller ULV Mini's. That way you create enough separation between them that people feel they're both unique and useful in different ways. That's something the current Mini lacks, IMO.

The only way that Apple would do this would be to split the product line into two: Mac mini and Mac mini Pro (or some other moniker, it really doesn't matter what they call it). This is highly unlikely since the Mac mini is not a high volume product like the MacBook.

If they switch to a new product design, they will probably let the old mini pizza box design die. After all, with no more optical drive, there are no more design requirements for a 6-7" wide chassis.

Today's Apple does not like to proliferate product designs.

I would hardly call a machine that scores over 13k on GB3 tragic... :D

Plus, it is more than likely that new mini won't be out until mar/april and will have new look... Where as i really like the current look :D

i'm just hoping they make it smaller (a bit bigger than the current Apple TV) but still have the Aluminum unibody...plus SSD as standard.

Disagree. I think the mac mini is small enough. Making it any smaller just further complicates the cooling even further.
SSD standard sounds cool, but you wind up paying more upfront and not getting what you want. I think the apple SSDs are Samsung 840s if I remember correctly. A solid SSD, but far from the top of the charts anymore. Id rather pay less to get baseline HDD and ram and upgrade those parts myself. That way I get what I want in the device and I likely save money doing it.

As the new Macbook Pros still only allow for 16GB of ram, I don't really see the mac minis being able to handle more.

The mac mini is a consumer pc, not designed for the hardcore professional. Thats what the Mac Pro is for. Id say <1% of all consumer customers that buy the mac mini need more than 16gb of ram or the current i7 processor lineup. Ive got the 2.6ghz i7 in my mac mini and its at idle 99% of the time.

I have been watching ebay for a 2011 2.7 Mini but they are pretty rare. They are having a Black Friday sale near me with $100 off any mac. I can get the base mini for $479.00 should I just go ahead and get the new one?

i'd get the i7..

i have that i5 chip in my MBP and it can be quite sluggish and one things.

the 2.3 i7 chip in the mini is a whirlwind... and worth every penny of that upgrade :D

same here i idle quite a bit. but love having the speed at my disposal for when i need it... :D (and bragging of course)

also i think this is true for most current and would be mini owners. its in fact one of the reasons i don't think we are going to see a new one for a while. the current one really holds it weight well against much of the rest of lineup... and better than quite a few... granted in GPU performance is not so important to you...

ahh, well. wait and see :D

Does anyone here know if the Mini's use Intel vPro in any of their chipsets? Maybe the server model? Are they used anywhere? I haven't seen Apple advertise it, wonder if they do it.

O RLY, you mean like the iPad Air, iPad 2, iPad Mini, and iPad Mini with retina display? Or the iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, and the iPhone 4S? Or the iPod Touch, iPod Classic, iPod Nano, and the iPod Shuffle? Or the three different MacBook Pro models in two different sizes plus two different sized MacBook Air's? No? How about two different size iMacs and a gazillion different configurations of all of these?

But, two different Mac Mini's would be out of character? LOL

Apple is currently updating their Store. Maybe its just from black Friday, or something else is going on.
I'm hoping for a new mini like everyone else, but nonetheless I'll be getting one during the holidays!

Edit: disregard. Sadly no update, just false alarm (and wishful thinking) :/

Don't confuse iOS devices with OS X devices... the volumes are an order of magnitude larger.

The MBP and iMac examples have something in common with each other but not with the mini... display size. The other differentiator with the MBP and iMac, processor power, is also available via two distinctly different minis. Of course, you can still get many more mini combos through the BTO option.

They are not distinctly different.

In fact, it's impossible to tell them apart by looking at them or doing common tasks.

If you need convincing, go to Geekbench and look it up. A quad-core i7 mini has double the horsepower of a dual-core i5 mini. And who cares what they look like? A dual-core MacPro looks identical to one with eight cores.

Geekbench is a synthetic benchmark. The i7 doesn't equate to being twice as fast in the real world.

Go here if you want to see some useful comparisons: http://www.macworld.com/article/2013250/lab-tested-2012-mac-mini-gets-a-nice-speed-boost.html

They're not distinctly different. In fact, they have so much in common they're practically indistinguishable.

And looks do matter because not everyone needs or wants something designed to house and cool a quad-core CPU and a pair of 2.5" hard drives.

My Mini lives under the TV a lot of the time so it would be nice if the new one was black to match the Apple TV  . I'm interested in potential upgrade but having just added ram and new hdd I'll wait for a potential refresh next year as to make spending the money worthwhile it will have to be a jump forward (e.g. Haswell +). I went for HDD rather than SSD as I was expecting to spend money on new Mini.

If you really need the double horsepower, pay and buy it...if you can do your work with less horsepower (dual-core), this is much wiser...

PS: Generally speaking, technology is changing almost every year, you don't have to purchase the BEST of 2013 when you don't need it and later, you run after the BEST of 2014 and so on...save your money for other family activities or so...this is my advice.
