First time I played BioShock and the lights go out and splicers attack made me jump. A storm outside helped with the atmosphere. Other than that AvP 1 was scary as hell when playing as a Marine.

The Flood in Halo

I think I'm beyond the scare stage, but The Flood did give me an eerie feeling.

AvP gave me such a crick in my neck due to tension. :)

the first and only game that ever scared me was the first Alone in the Dark on my 75mhz mac at the time :D
oh and wait the first time the zombie appeared in Return to Castle Wolfenstein was also kind of scary...

It's called immersion. :)

Yeah, but sadly this thread reeks of pseudo-macho attitudes ...

I love horror games! The problem is that I'm no longer scared by them, in fact I usually enjoy the whole "scary" atmosphere. After the first time playing, the game is no longer scary and then turns into a quest for getting all of the extras, weapons, items, alternate clothes, different endings... I can only play a scary game so many times before I know where all of the enemies and things popping out at the screen are.

Anyway! The last time a game scared me was just a few days ago, I had been playing for hours without saving and my character was almost about to die.

I never like being even close to scared in games. So I've been playing Oblivion for the first time recently, and it can really startle you at times when you're in a cave and something sneaks up on you. I've literally jumped in my chair. Yeah, I'm a wimp. :p

Dead Space. Alone, at night, by yourself. The atmosphere is intense.

Silent Hill. 1, 2, and 3, not 4.

FEAR2 isn't scary IMO, by it regularly scared my roommate with all of the random, flashy, psychedelic crap they throw at you around every corner. Especially the Alma flashing right up in front of you stuff, that really got him going. I just found it annoying, since it interrupted game play

The Flood in Halo

I think it's more the music that builds up that really scary atmosphere. Still, first time I played it I was papping myself.

In recent games, Modern Warfare 2 (online multiplayer). I was shot in the back by a shotgun close range, didn't hear anyone come up behind me, it's the one thing that still makes me jump.

The only real current gen game that gives me the willies is L4D with friends, mics on, they're all dead. There's the usual chatter whilst everything is okay but once a horde appears and you're solo... they fall silent.

That's when I get scared. The pressure of everything resting on you, the music, the hordes of zombies, the special infected. God if there's a Tank my nerves just get shot.

The first game that scared me was Super Mario Bros 3 for NES. Those boos that chase you and that freaking scary sun in the desert levels!!!

Other then that the original Silent Hill made me jump through the roof when you are in the school and those little ***** that actually don't even attack you run through the halls. (The little tiny ghosts).
