There's a lot of tech packed in these devices. I think prices will continue to rise, but our desire to upgrade annually will diminish. We'll treat like as we do laptops and just upgrade once our device is no longer supported / no longer performs well.

Agree - and this is what I intend to do now.
I will stick with my 13PM until Apple release a handset with enough change for it to feel like an upgrade. Every year I upgrade and after setup etc I get the 'meh' feeling, as though it's just more of the same. The update to iOS16 should make my phone feel new all over again for now!
With my laptop I moved across to Apple Silicon with a M1 Max, and now a M2 as my portable machine - both will keep me going for many years, until there is a next big leap, or until I'm forced to upgrade......

You don’t understand the question. When will YOU stop?

You like spending your money on apple gadgets? That’s ok. When will YOU stop if prices keep getting bigger?

THATS my question to people like you.
You're getting angry/defensive responses because your original question wasn't completely objective. Rather than simply asking the question, "what is your upper limit", which would have been an interesting topic to get a sense of the demand curve for the iPhone, you started injecting your thoughts about what price YOU think is too much for an iPhone and about how people who keep buying these phones "Must be rich people". So of course people will get defensive, as everyone's circumstances is different.

most people aren't paying anywhere close to full price. here in the US, the carrier trade-in deals almost make it stupid NOT to trade in. get a brand new phone for $0? (or a couple hundred if you have an older one) why not?

You don’t get it for zero. You traded in your old phone and now have to deal with bill credits.

Honestly how is that your problem. Nobody is forced to buy.

The monthly prices are the same regardless of whether you get the free phones or not. I'm sure it's baked into the prices, but you pay the same whether or not you opt to get a free phone.

I have 7 lines (4 phones and 3 watches) and pay $220 total with taxes. Unlimited talk and data. With free HBO+.
are you by any chance single looking to marry a greek guy ? btw which state you in , i would totally move there for these kind of offers.

You pay for it one way or another. Either through inflated monthly payments or all at once. Getting "trade-in" deals means you forgo the savings offered by MVNOs. There is no free lunch.

Exactly. Some people never factor in the phone they trade is having any value and claim they got the new phone for free.

I used to buy an iPad every year but stopped after buying the 2018 iPad Pro 12.9. I miss the days when a new mid range iPad w/ cellular was $730. Now it’s double that. Add in the stagnation in software and OS and I might not even replace it when it dies and go back to Mac only. For iPhones I do the payment plans so it’s about $20 more per month now. This might be that last time I yearly upgrade.

Well, you dont understand, when will YOU stop, paying for expensive, wine, clothes, energy, Graphic cards, Cars, gifts, rent, and other stuff.

Are you working ? i hope so, so you get payed. Well then some day will come a guy called Sensamic to your boss and tells him when he will stop paying you so much for the work you are doing.

Its the same as you are doing.

"Why do i have to pay for a Ferrari, Lamborginy, Aston Martin, etc. so much when it has the same 4 wheels, as a Ford, or a VolksWagen"

It strikes me seeing people accepting buying a phone (Apple or any other company) for more than 1000€. Now with the new models a Pro 128GB is 1500€, which is absolutely insane. Maybe in 4 years the Pro Max base 256GB will be 2000€, yet still (some) people will buy it.

Doesnt matter if you pay it in 24/36 months. It is just TOO much.

I always wonder if these people who keep buying have 200.000$ per year jobs. Must be rich people, because anyone who is paying gas, electricity, food, rent or whatever surely can’t see this been right.

When will you stop?

Some people seem ok with paying 1.500€ for the 14 Pro Max. So, when will you stop?
Yes, this is getting out of hand, the prices should be low cause they are similar to the 13 series, and only a few features have been added!

It’s not about how much you make, it’s about how much disposable income you have.
Or what you can justify in your head. I know a genuinely mega-wealthy guy who drives an old basic car, wears charity shop clothes, a cheap mall watch and has a very old low tier Samsung mobile. He could afford all the trappings of wealth believe me.

The price doesn't matter. People will come up with ways to justify their purchase if they think it's worth it to them.

I judge technology by how much time it can save me and the 14 despite all the fancy tech doesn't save me more time compared to earlier models.

There is a lot that goes into this. Some people don’t care what model phone they have. I have a buddy who is a millionaire and rocks a regular iPhone 12 and before it was an iPhone 6s. I on other hand have a great job and have plenty means to upgrade every year and I do just that. Do I need it? Probably not at all, but I work hard and I reward myself when I see fit. You only get one chance in this world, screw it. Be happy which ever way you go with this or anything else for that matter.
Ah so you know Chris Evans?

Or the other thing many of us do (again I am in US, so prices are a bit different), is that we may buy the phone at full price, but we sell our previous phone so the out of pocket cost for the new one may not be all that much. Add that to any carrier incentives- my carrier often has a $300 off deal when buying the next model- it may be a very minimal cost when all is said and done.

I will stop now. I’ve been buying every single model since the 3g. But the prices now are outrageous. I remember Steve Job’s vision to have everyone own an iPhone. Now, it’s all about profit margins. I can’t justify to myself paying 1600€ for the 256gb pro max. I definitely can afford it, but it’s more expensive than an iPad Pro an even a mbp. The only way I’ll buy it will be if I get it from the states, at a reasonable price.
I bought this one with 256 GB precisely to last me two years. But since some trade in programs practically give you the phone for free then I don’t know. It would be dumb to not trade in every year because if you try to do it next year then you will have to pay up.

People seem to gloss over the fact that you're not buying a phone. You're buying a miniaturized computer with it's primary function is to be a phone/communication device. But for all intents and purposes it's a mini-laptop practically as far as computing power and all the functions it's capable of.

I hate this, and of course the only post paid value unlimited plans that are more in line with the prepaid counterparts are never eligible for trade in promotions. I’m not paying $65+ a month for phone service that’s just in my mind an unreasonable cost.
Yes. I buy my phones without carrier and then I just get a prepaid plan that costs me like 10 dollars a month. So in two years I’ve only spent 240 + 1,000 for the phone = 1240 instead of the 70 dollars a month that would cost me 840 a year or 1,680 every two years.

It's expensive, but then it is also the device I use every day for everything.

The rate at which I update has been changing, from every year, to every two years and now a four year gap. I could easily have gone six years, but the camera upgrade is something I've wanted for a while.

Maybe this one will last me six years.
