I think the iphone XR is a very viable option. What are your opinions about this device?

Personally, I'm struggling to see the value given it's high cost ( $1300NZD or $851USD) so I'm going to wait until I see it in person.

No doubt it will be a great iPhone, but I'm not convinced yet.

The XR is going to do very big numbers in Asia. They love their phablets over there.

I update every three years, bought 8 on day one, so not looking to upgrade until 2020 at minimum. So none of the 2018 phones are of interest.

That said, I would buy an Xr if it were the size of the Xs: not a phablet fan, and until I get to handle an Xr, seems too much like a Plus phone size-wise, which I am not a fan of.

Was not impressed with the X display, meh about Face ID, camera is not important as I use DSLR for shooting and phone camera is for the odd spur of the moment pic (and for that, still darn good camera), add in price tag, not a fan of X other than closer to 6/7/8 sized.

I don't live on my phone, it's a tool in my tech arsenal, so not looking for a TV/laptop/tablet replacement in my phone.

If it were smaller, I'd actually consider it instead of the Xs I'm about to get.

However, I'd still go with the Xs due to:

  • dual rear cameras
  • 4GB RAM
  • higher resolution, pixel dense screen
The Xr is intriguing, but Apple's differentiation decisions worked to drive me up.

If I was going to replace my 6s this year I'd go with the XR. I barely care about screen quality on a 5-6" screen. If I want to watch a lot of video I'll do it on my TV. CPU is the same. Ram is the same. Don't care about 5g since I'm on a capped data plan.

Would be nice if it was thinner/smaller like the XS but not $250+ worth.

The nicer camera would be cool for travel, but the price is too big of a delta to justify it IMO.

Because youtubers only care to showoff the flagships.

In reality, the XR will be huge.

It's like the 5C, but now it's not gimped at all (having the same SoC as the flagship). If you only read the tech blogs, you would feel that nobody buys the 5C, while in reality, many people did. XR will be bigger than that.

When you consider the cost of your travels , the slightly extra cost over two years of have the amazing camera might be worth the splurge

Never pay a premium for older technology

I almost pulled the trigger on the XR. Money savings would be nice, but to be frank it was because I wanted one of the colors.

I did not get the XR because of the thicker bezel around the screen and the extra thickness of the device would have felt clunky to me. If I'm going to have a phone of that external dimensions this year I might as well go for the Max, which I did.

Had they offered a 6.1 inch screen with external casing dimensions proportionate to the XSs I would have gone for it. But the added thickness and width the LCD apparently caused killed the XR for me.

If I were interested in picking up a phone this year (not sure yet) and it was an iOS device, it would be this one hands down on price alone.

Biggest drawbacks for me is I’m not like most people and want that 4.7 inch form factor. I’m sick of this big phone trend. The Plus models were an unwieldy joke and I’ll never buy anything that big again. The XR is slightly smaller but I would need to hold it.

Still wish this was the smaller model instead of the middle size.

The 828p resolution I couldn’t care less about. I have a 32 inch 720 bedroom TV that’s fine for me. This phone would be more than fine visually-speaking. Its for out and about as far as video goes. YouTube videos and the like. Not movies or shows. At home I use bigger screens anyway. Not my phone.

Apple seems to make as good an LCD as could be had in 2018 and This is supposed to be tuned perfectly. I see no issues here, but that’s me.

People can bitch about the specs all they want. In my real-world use-case, non-issue. But I’m not one that cries about specs if the phone does what need it to do.

For the price, I think it’s the hands-down winner this year with the 3 options available. I will never pay 1k for a phone. Ever. From anyone. Amazing spec-sheet be damned. I have my limits and its been reached.

Honestly a used X from last year would be my preference due to screen size alone. This “phablet” revolution needs to die a horrible death. I just don’t want any part of it.

I honestly like... If that screen was a little higher res, I think I’d choose it over the Xs Max I chose .

I loveeeee the coral.

So you buy phones just because of numbers on the spec list. You are in the wrong forum.

Show me a phone that can beat the Poco F1. The rest of Android phones are overpriced as well.

How would you almost pull the trigger on an XR? It doesn't go on pre-order until October.

It should be noted the XR at 2.98 inches is narrower than the Max at 3.05 inches, but has the same screen real estate. Both the XR and Max are 414x896 point phones. The XS is considerably smaller, at 375x812.

So despite the fact that the XS's cost is closer to the XR, IMO the proper comparison for the XR is against the XS Max. Yes, the Max all around is a nicer phone than the XR, but it is also physically bigger and costs 56% more if you want more than 64 GB.

No love. Old tech. Camera well below Xs. No 3D Touch inferior display etc. Better off saving some money and by a 8+.
Camera is the same as the XS's and Max's wide angle, and all three are a considerable improvement over the 8/8+ and X.

IOW, it's brand new tech in the XR camera, but the drawback is there is only one lens. Fortunately, Apple has introduced Portrait Mode on the single-lens XR camera this year.

Do we know the XR has 4gb RAM or 3gb RAM?
My guess is the XR has 3 GB RAM, which would be 1 GB less than the XS and XS Max, but at this price point I don't care.

coming from an X id never want a xr screen honestly. The screen is worse then the iPhone 6 screen. ppi is lower screen is bigger. bezels look worse then a 4 year old phone.

Errr... The pixel density of the iPhone XR is EXACTLY the same as the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, and iPhone 8.

And BTW, the pixel density of all those phones is also the same as the SE, 5S, 5C, 4S, and 4 too.

So you paid $1k for the X. Meanwhile, I can get the XR which has more advance SoC than your X, still retina screen at more than 300ppi, and for $250 less.

If you only look at ppi, plenty of Android phones better than your X

I'll show some love. :D I don't really care about the ppi since I'll be coming from a 7. I don't need the second camera nor care about videos not rendering in full hd. Xr is the perfect upgrade for me because of battery life, 6 inch display yet smaller than the Plus, X functionality, and iOS 12.

I think it is a great phone. I was all ready to buy it. But I use the 2x telephoto option about 75% of the time I take photos, so I don’t want to lose that feature. XS Max for me.
