So you paid $1k for the X. Meanwhile, I can get the XR which has more advance SoC than your X, still retina screen at more than 300ppi, and for $250 less.

If you only look at ppi, plenty of Android phones better than your X
look at the ppi of the 6,7,8 a smaller screen phone also. a 6.1" screen with that level of ppi is just not as high of quality screen as the smaller iPhones. similar yes but no where close to the + phones or the oled phones.
Geekbench so far is out on the xr and it isnt any better than an X from a year ago. The x is a better phone then the xr sorry it just is

How would you almost pull the trigger on an XR? It doesn't go on pre-order until October.

It should be noted the XR at 2.98 inches is narrower than the Max at 3.05 inches, but has the same screen real estate. Both the XR and Max are 414x896 point phones. The XS is considerably smaller, at 375x812.

So despite the fact that the XS's cost is closer to the XR, IMO the proper comparison for the XR is against the XS Max. Yes, the Max all around is a nicer phone than the XR, it is also bigger and costs 56% if you want more than 64 GB.

Camera is the same as the XS's and Max's wide angle, and all three are a considerable improvement over the 8/8+ and X.

IOW, it's brand new tech in the XR camera, but the drawback is there is only one lens. Fortunately, Apple has introduced Portrait Mode on the single-lens XR camera this year.

My guess is the XR has 3 GB RAM, which would be 1 GB less than the XS and XS Max, but at this price point I don't care.

I was hoping for 4, but I doubt I can push my luck.

Errr... The pixel density of the iPhone XR is EXACTLY the same as the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, and iPhone 8.

And BTW, the pixel density of all those phones is also the same as the SE, 5S, 5C, 4S, and 4 too.
This is the problem. I can’t believe that Apple didn’t AT LEAST use the 401 PPI screens from the Plus models, OR make the screen 1080P (whatever the PPI would have been).

This basically, Plus in the photos it looks just like a poor mans XS, the XS models really outclass it. Have to see one in the flesh to know for sure though.
So Kinda like buying a Porsche Cayman.
Poor man’s Porsche. But it’s a Porsche! Lolz

its a tragedy really. its hard for me to recommend it to my mom coming from an iPhone 6+. the screen on that 4 year old phone is better even though the phone is crap. I might just talk her into a 8+ ill see if she likes the xr more and can notice in store before getting one
[doublepost=1536987050][/doublepost]most people can see the difference between an iPhone 8 display and an iPhone 8+ display. so this 6.1" screen will look that much worse than the smaller 8 screen. I dont understand apple at all.

Cost probably. But it makes sense, given that people don't generally complain about the iPhone 8's screen. It's already Retina after all, you need to be closer than about 10-11" before you start the see the pixel structure.

Also, I don't think the math would work out easily while keeping costs down. If they used the LCD type in the 5.5", then it would be a 6.4" screen. That would add considerable cost, and would make it a more direct competitor to the XS Max. Basically it would mean the XS Max would have almost no reason to exist aside from the telephoto lens and OLED blacks.

What are you talking about? The PPI of the XR is the same as the 8. The screen will look exactly as sharp as an 8. If you have a plus then sure you might see a difference, but anyone upgrading from a 6/7/8 will be fine with the XR.

Plus the XR has the same landscape mode features as the plus models and the max which the XS doesn’t have. Swings and roundabouts.

I can’t wait to try the XR.

So you buy phones just because of numbers on the spec list. You are in the wrong forum.

Show me a phone that can beat the Poco F1. The rest of Android phones are overpriced as well.
You’re even hanging on the poco in the iOS section? Lol...

Apple has got to be the most stingy HUGE company around. From their grossly overpriced storage to their year in and year out price hikes, to this phone. They know a lot of people can’t afford the Xs or Max but they still want an iPhone. For a lot of people, the XR is the only option they have. Apple had no incentive to make the XR a great phone. I feel the Xs and max are GREAT phones, but the price is too high for me being so cheap. But no one can say the 2 X models are cheap or cut any corners. They are the best phones ever made, pretty much unanimously. The XR is a cheap slapped together phone that will be marketed hard to the people who can’t afford an x. Never before has the cheap iPhone been SO much worse than the flagship. Too bad.

It’s not a 720p screen. This seems to be a popular myth that keeps getting repeated for some strange reason.
It’s a lower quality screen than a 7+. At least match the 7+ is what I think the point is. Lcd will never be as good as oled, but they could have at least made a lateral move instead of actually lowering the quality.

If you know it isn’t 720p then don’t call it 720p.

And the baseline should be 326 ppi, and that’s exactly what it is, the same as the iPhone 8.
How much bigger is the XR than the 8? It’s pitiful for a screen the size of the XR to have the resolution it has.

Exactly, and it’s much higher PPI than the iPad Pros and people don’t moan about them! x

Even though it’s bigger than an 8 it won’t be any less sharp than an 8 though

That statement doesn’t make much sense. The 8 and XR have the exact same pixel density so it doesn’t matter if one is bigger than another. Yes the pixel density of the Plus is higher, but if you are comparing the XR to the 8, there will be no noticeable difference with regards to sharpness because they are the same.

BTW, both the XR and 8 screens have a slightly higher contrast ratio than the Plus screen.

I can agree with all the concern for the 326 PPI on the Xr but something I’ve thought about is this: I bought my wife the 10.5 iPad Pro a few months ago and the screen is amazing to me and the PPI is 264. I’ve haven’t heard one person say anything bad about the IPP screen. I pre-ordered the Xs Max 256 silver and I’m starting to feel kinda dumb for spending $1,250... my justification is that I’m coming from a 2 year old 7 plus but that even that phone is still working flawlessly. I do like 3D Touch. The price has me wondering if I should return it.

You can’t compare a phone the size of the XR to an 8. It’s even bigger than the 8+, but has a lower ppi. Apple cheaped out knowing that millions of people will buy it because it’s the cheapest way to experience a 2018 iPhone.

This statement confirms you don’t fully understand the point of pixel density. At the same viewing distances it doesn’t matter if the phone is 3.5” or 4” or 5” or 6”. If they have the same pixel density, their sharpness will be the same.

If someone is satisfied with an 8, they will be satisfied with an XR.
