I would go with the 12 Pro instead if I just couldn't fit the 12 Pro Max in my pocket comfortably. Otherwise, I'd be willing to pay an extra $100 to get a bigger screen and better telephoto lens.
12 Pro Max: larger main camera sensor with 1/1,7" size, which really matters as all photo enthusiast know.
12 Pro: same small sized sensor from last year 1/2,5".
This means for me the 12 Pro Max is the only way to go.

I know I'm going to use my iPhone Upgrade Program to move to a newer 12 Pro. I just can't decide which one, primarily because of the better camera on the 12 Pro Max. The better OIS, the larger photo sites on the sensor which make it better in low light (and I imagine also help dynamic range since larger photo sites = lower ISO = better dynamic range from shadow to highlight), and the 65mm telephoto (2.5X) make it really tempting. Honestly, if it was 3X or especially 4X optical (not just from the standard 0.5X but really 78mm or 104mm) it would be a no brainer. I tried it out the digital zoom at 2.5x on my iPhone 11 Pro as a comparison and it is a bit tighter but it's also not significant. Just kinda nice? But I'd really like to have the better OIS for video to pair with the amazing new video functionality and the larger sensor.

I like the middle size most. When I use my wife's first gen SE the keyboard feels too cramped now. The Max seems like it would be a monster but I haven't used one. But I have used something similar.

Back in 2014 I used the iPhone 6 Plus for a year. Wanted to try out phablets when they first came to iPhone. Hah, in 2020 5.5" is hardly a phablet. Anyway, didn't like it because of the keyboard and reachability. However, having had a taller phone since the X (but not the Max), I'm used to using reachability which is also easier to activate with the home indicator gesture than the old home button method. At least for me. I also have changed the way I hold phones having used these taller displays. A few iOS versions ago, they added the ability to have a smaller keyboard via a toggle. So that addresses some of my concern.

The biggest reason I hated the iPhone 6 Plus was because it seemed like I either got a lemon or it was way underpowered for the 1080p display at the time. It only had 1GB of RAM and I would experience a lot of crashes and stuttering. Honestly I feel like that painted the wrong picture for me about the bigger phones, but IDK. I remember going back to the smaller size when I got the iPhone 6s was such a massive breath of fresh air.

The thing is that I don't need a phablet. I have an iPad Pro 12.9" 3rd gen that is great. I've also been stuck at home most of the year, although hopefully that changes by spring if this pandemic will end. I also lost my job recently, but like I said, I'm on the iPhone Upgrade Program so it's the same monthly cost either way and my wife is still working and I have a lot of savings. But I'd still like to maybe make the payment go down by switching to the 128GB Pro. I have the $1099 256GB iPhone 11 Pro on the plan now so it would be the same to move to the iPhone 12 Pro Max at $1099. I needed a little more than 64GB, but 128GB would be plenty with my iCloud storage and 256GB was always overkill.

Guess I could always try it out and send it back if I hate it. Not sure how that works on the iPhone Upgrade Program? Wish I had more than two weeks to test it out. Also wish it didn't come out until after the election because who knows what kind of craziness will be brewing then.

The 12 is physically smaller than the 11, has 5G, has a better camera system with night mode on all the camera units (night mode is for wide camera only on the 11), OLED screen and better chipset.
The 12 Mini has all those upgrades and at a lot smaller physical size.

For you give dowry
The soul of the devil to sell
And as if from heaven,
All to thee pushes the devil
For you give dowry
The soul of the devil to sell
Let raging in the heart of the blood
I need your love

But seriously-buy a white iPhone 12 Pro Max .

After watching the keynote I’m probably not going to upgrade this year.

Although I’m on the upgrade program.

Even though I mentioned this earlier but coming to think of it if I don’t upgrade then I’m the loser since I’m going to pay for my present 11 Pro for another year anyway.

So I’m thinking I’ll go with the Pro Max for the camera and nothing else.

5G is the main reason for choosing the 12 over the 11. You may not get much of a connectivity improvement now, but you will appreciate having 5G as it rolls out wherever you are. It's better to spend a little extra to get a device that will last you for years to come.

This is only applicable for people who keep their devices for years. For the next year or 2 5G will not be available as widely and it feels like a waste of money to buy a phone based on promises for the future.

Exercise is where the cellular watch comes into play. Carrying a phone to me when exercising is just a massive pain, the watch you don’t even notice it’s there.

Sometimes I go for a long "power walk" during the working day where I absolutely need to carry a phone in case important emails with attachments need reviewing and replying, or, I get added to a video conference at the last minute. I totally agree though, my preference is going alone with the cellular Apple Watch whenever possible.

When I go out for a run I don’t want to be answering calls and replaying to texts. The non cellular is great for recording your exercise without unnecessary interruptions in my view.

I have a 11 pro now. Undecided as I might go for the 12 mainly for the weight. The 11 pro feels like a brick in your pocket. I like the even weight distribution of the 11. The 12 should be better. Better camera on the 12 pro and 2gb more ram is not much difference. The 12 is lighter but I would like more ram but hate the weight of the pro.

That’s the great thing about having the 2 different models, choice.
Some people don't need to be always connected and can grab a non-cellular model, others could use the extra point of contact should problems occur and the cellular model is an amazing option.

Nothing will happen after the election. Biden is a pro corporatist, pro billionaire hack and so is trump. Politicians are millionaires who serve billionaires

Holding off to see the screens in person.

it’s either going to be a 256gb 12 pro mini, or the iphone SE if the 12 fails to impress me.

I’m ignoring The 5G feature when I get my 12 max. If there’s a toggle to turn it off and stay on LTE that’s what I’ll do. The feature that I like are the Qualcomm modems. From apples marketing they said the LTE speeds you had on the last iPhones will be double now

NO, It's a rort here, for me to have 5G i have to upgrade my plan from $40AUD to a $65 plan lol, so extra $300 a year, its available in and around my town but i work from home, always have so would rarely use it, and when i go out of town for work to more rural areas you can't get it anyway and will be years away.

I think he’s right to be honest in terms of biggest seller of the new phones. Seeing as Apple continue to sell the XR/11 too, I think they’ll continue to sell well too. I have no doubt the 12 Mini will be a big seller too.

Yeah i'm very torn between 12 Mini and 12 Pro.
