Can I ask a question? Why is it that everyone equates having an iPad with no need to have a large iPhone? I have an 11” iPad Pro and a Pro Max. Both fit a need. I wouldn’t be comfortable watching a movie on my iPhone even being the biggest screen. I’ll do that on my iPad (on a flight) or better a TV.

Also, some apps are better on the iPhone and some apps are better on the iPad. I don’t carry my iPad with me wherever I go and sometimes there is a wait where having a larger screen is nice when passing time, like when I read a book on the PM screen.

Just thought I’d toss that in because I see the same thoughts expressed in 12 Pro threads and now here in the mini thread. I like the 11” iPad because it is less cumbersome when I’m reading in bed and the Pro Max because of the screen real estate when I’m out and about.

Anyway, carry on... I hope more people get the mini so I can get the Max on launch day. 🙂

Pretty simple for me. I don’t use my phone on the go except for essential things, like calling, texting, etc. I don’t personally see a need for screen real estate on the go. I do however see a need for a light weight, easily manageable/pocketable device. My iPad is at home for content consumption, light photo editing, etc. My desktop is there for gaming and heavy work. They all fit an individual, specific use case for me.

I'm in the US, on the west coast. I went to the Apple website and it showed 11/6, but I did not see a time.
Maybe I just did not dig far enough- but I appreciate the answers here!

Thanks for that extra info, too- I envisioned it being like trying to buy those concert tickets you mentioned. haha. I am glad to hear it is not nearly that bad.

I will look forward to the 5AM start to the day next Friday. :)
It could just be for the non-US sites (I'm in Australia so it will be midnight for us). I can't wait either!!!

I just have no need for a large phone even when I’m out. At home I have larger devices.

I can see the benefit of having a large phone, when you unexpectantly get delayed, such as train late, or waiting for an appointment, and only have your iPhone with you. I guess it is all a matter of priorities? For me small phone is best to carry and use walking, while large phone is obviously more enjoyable in actual use when stationary. Which is best just depends on lifestyle.

Everybody is different. I got used to having a large phone but now I’ve upgraded to a smaller phone, I am seeing the benefits of not having a cumbersome device in my pocket anymore. My iPhone is more of an ‘on the go’ device that I use for work, texts, social media and a bit of web browsing. I’ve realised I don’t need a big device for that and when I get home I use my iPad anyway which is a big device. It’s nice for me to have that balance between devices without the inconvenience.

The Pro Max will appeal to many I’m sure but to me it’s a huge turn off with the new size. The iPhone 8+ was just that bit too big IMO and stretching the sizing a bit further is bordering on iPad territory. When I’m constantly removing my phone from my pocket so I can sit down, I realised I didn’t need it even though using a bigger screen is nice.

I remember those days from when I had a 7 Plus and the new Pro Max is bigger still!

When I got an X, I swore the I would not get a bigger phone again. Now with the 12 Pro being bigger, the only comfortable size new iPhone to carry will be the 12 Mini. For myself I am sticking with my 11 Pro for now, and hope that a Pro Mini will come out in the future, as I really want that 2x camera.

the 12 and 12 Pro were released 1 week after the official release here in Bulgaria and for some reason we will get the mini and Pro Max at the same time with everyone else, what a nice surprise, can't wait

Love the size. I can’t wait to get the mini, and I wasn’t even intending to upgrade this year. They really hit it out of the park with a small phone displaying the same amount of info as an 5.8”, on a screen with high PPI. It really feels like that old Apple magic to me.
Same here. There was nothing that Apple could have done technology-wise to entice me to upgrade to a similar sized phone this year (currently still using an XS) - but reducing the size of the phone is the one feature I'm willing to pay for as it will genuinely change my day to day user experience.

It will of course also be nice to also have the new tech too, particularly the better main camera and night mode (although a bit gutted to lose the telephoto lens). These days the technology updates generally feel more incremental, which is why I only upgrade every 2 years. This will be the first time I've bought the most recent phone on its release since the 7! Even though I know that next year's iPhone mini will be better, I'm just desperate for a smaller, lighter phone.

Because I'm going for the 256GB model (in black) I doubt there will be too many issues with supply, as the highest memory model in each line tend (if I remember rightly from previous years) to have the lowest demand on launch.

Same here. And even though it's nice to a larger screen on a phone occasionally, for me that benefit is outweighed (literally!) by carrying a larger, heavier phone around which is less comfortable for one handed use in the majority of 'mobile' situations. Plus, I can do nearly everything I need to on smaller screen, but I can't make a bigger phone any smaller physically - i.e. it's easier for me to adjust my eyes to a smaller screen, than it is to adjust the size of my pockets, or weight in my hand, of using a bigger phone.

Yes, I used to travel a lot for work and personal, so having the larger screen in the airport, in the Uber, waiting at the hotel, etc was more convenient than even an iPad mini. Being on the move so much, plus sometimes needing to quickly review emails, I found having the biggest screen I could easily carry - it’s in my hand or my back pocket more than in my handbag, btw - to be the best.

I get it, men like the smaller, more portable and pocketable devices. That’s my husband, he loves the size of his Pro. I just became curious with the justification for the smaller phone being that “I have an iPad”, but you explained clearly. You don’t have pauses or waits when you go out, so you don’t look at your screen much, if at all. Got it and thanks.

Some men wear baggy jeans/trousers and like huge phones too. My wife is petite and has small hands so hates big phones even though she carries a handbag and uses her iPhone for business and pleasure. It’s not always a gender thing but more a personal preference I think. Most of the women I work with tend to carry iPhone 8’s, X’s, XR’s and very few people I come into contact with carry the bigger iPhones. It’s difficult to pinpoint the demographic for the Max phones really.

I think once the 12 Mini is released it’ll be a very common iPhone to see about as there is clearly a lot of love for smaller devices still.

Why do we try and put things into columns of gender preference? It makes no sense. Men and women alike individually prefer small or large things. Men and women alike individually prefer colorful or neutral things. Gender preferences are not as black and white as some like to think.

what do you all think the 12 Mini keyboard will look like? I guess it will be a cramped keyboard.
Probably very similar to the keyboards on the original 6, 7 SE1/2 etc. I.e. slightly narrower, but not massively different. I've found that using the swipe feature is actually easier on a more compact keyboard, so depends on your preference. Plus, some people who are attracted to the iPhone mini are probably doing so because they have smaller hands/fingers, and so a more compact keyboard isn't necessarily seen as a downside to everyone. Whether you see it as 'compact' or 'cramped' will likely depend on why you're buying the phone

Correct. My wife uses her iPhone for everything including watching her series and shows.
She refuses to use the huge 85" TV we have for that.
I on the other hand prefere using my iPad Pro for YouTube and even do that on Apple TV and have always enjoyed smaller phones.
So even though I got the iPhone 12 Pro right now, I'm definitely getting the Mini on launch day.

Exactly the reaction I suspected when I made my statement. As a woman, I’ve noticed many times that men here state what women want or why they want a large iPhone. It has made me chuckle quite often because I don’t “live on social media” and I don’t carry my phone in my handbag all the time.

I find it funny that the moment I state that men want something more pocketable, the question of gender arises shortly after. Anyway, I was genuine when I asked my question initially because I didn’t fit what was being stated regarding the iPhone size and having an iPad. Whoever you are, get what you want.

I’ll step out and let the mini conversation continue. It is a cute little phone. 🙂

I'm sorry if you took it any other way than me raising that question to everyone. I in no way meant that directed towards you specifically, but I can see the timing is poor. I've seen these questions raised far more by men on this forum and you're 100% correct. Every year we get the "is gold acceptable for a man?" thread, by a man, and it's an astronomically dumb topic. Again, I'm sorry, and I understand your above reaction.

No worries @Cryates. It’s all love here and I do understand now where you were coming from, so no need to apologize. I always come from a place of understanding, but I know that can get lost behind the keyboard sometimes.

everyone crapping the mini's size, as if you never used the OG, 3GS, 4, etc and were simply wowed by its existence. I don't get it

The 12 mini uses the same logical resolution as the X/XS/11Pro, just downscaled to the smaller screen (7-8% smaller), so I expect the keyboard will be the same as on the X/XS/11Pro as well, just scaled down proportionally.
