Yes, I know that the extended range battery (200kW Ultium) that the Hummer EV uses gets that range but it is pricey - $100,000+.

I wanted to the standard range, base, Silverado EV for $42K that has a smaller 100kW battery.
The truck they tested was the WT (of the 40k trim) with the big battery with a 80k list price. The vehicle said it had 500 miles of range before he clicked the towing button (where it dropped to 455 miles).

Do they have the VW iD3 or Copra born over there? They are other options. But agree it’s a shame BMW stopped making a smaller efficient EV.

No, like jz0309 said, the bolt is discontinued in 2024 and the leaf. nothing else in the US. Would love the iD3 or the Honda E, but no luck for those here.

We do have the mini Cooper EV, though

Same here. The i3 size is perfect for my family. The only reason I have not replaced it yet is in the US we do not have any similar sized (and as versatile) new EV's for sale. It seems it's now just SUV and pickup trucks are the new EV's coming out.

I really wanted the Hyundai Ioniq 5 when I saw the pictures, when I went to test drive in person it was a big boy. I thought it was going to be a chunky VW Golf and was super stoked when it was announced. The bolt is nice, a bit of a step down in feel/interior than my i3 but chevy is getting rid of the bolt. The new Hyundai Kona looks promising but I haven't looked into the pricing and specs yet. Sadly thats it for a functional small EV car, not much choice.

Prius Prime would be the only new thing out there I may consider, but I drive 3 high schoolers to basketball and school, none of them will fit in the back of the Prius.

Actually come to think of it, if they made a new Kia Soul EV I would probably swap that for the i3.
If you liked the Soul, you might check out the Kia Niro EV.

Gotta be in it to win it
Just be careful. Telsa has been dumping TM3/TMY for a year now. They are riding the Tax Credit wave, and even lowered prices to make trim lines fall within the credit. They even lowered the S/X. It really does take time to retool a factory.
That tax credit wave pushed me into Tesla ownership as I was debating my next car - which turned out to the M3LR. What pushed me over the edge was:
- the 7500 tax credit
- instant $1500 state tax credit
- no tax on EV sales
Plus:
- model discount
- inventory discount
- referral discount
The sign that the highland was coming was they shut down the China factory. This has yet to happen in the US.
A very small part of me wants the Model 3 refresh but I have no buyers remorse.

However, I can’t wait to see the M3 Performance refresh and see what Tesla has developed.

Glad you grabbed one before the end of the year as the tax credit is half starting in 2024.

Can you elaborate on how much the model, inventory and referral discounts were ?

The model discount reduced the price of the vehicle by the price of the upgrade to the 19 inch wheels. (In retrospect I think I would have been happy with the standard wheels)

The inventory discount was $500 and the referral discount was $500.

I saw one of these parked in my local supermarket yesterday and looked it up, seems like a really cool little EV. Having read and watched a lot of reviews, BYD have a significant advantage with their history of developing batteries and build quality sounds like it’s very good indeed.

They are fast expanding across Europe too with their dealerships. In the UK there are only 10 currently, but this time next year the plan is for 80. BYD are huge in the far east and sell hundreds of thousands of cars every month. This might take a bit of custom from Tesla’s Model 3 as these are a similar size but a few grand cheaper too. Very interesting I think and one to watch.

Watched that video yesterday. Definitely going after the Tesla model 3 customers.
I didn’t see how much it was though. That and the dealer network will help it to become a success. 10 already in the UK. Plans to open many more.

I think the entry model is £45kish. Similar pricing to Tesla but higher spec and seems to be using more premium materials in their cabins. Physical buttons and indicator storks too which might be appealing to many.

Edit: The original price I thought was based on a review I saw but was converting Chinese pricing to UK, which of course isn’t relevant.

I’m not that keen on BYD and XPeng etc. On paper they look rather good, and it’s nice that there are better value options. But make no mistake they compete on price alone. Similar with the Chinese MG.

As such I think they make the new TM3 look like excellent value for money. But anyone wanting a bit more than cheap and a long standard options list won’t fall for it.

I think that price point might be a little high. If they could get it below £40k I think they’d do better.

Yeah same here, even if the entry model is more equipped than the Tesla Model 3. People will go for a brand they know despite maybe getting more for their money for a few grand more. These prices will drop I am sure as they are aggressively going after the market in Europe. Tesla were forced to reduce their prices after all.

Interestingly BYD are a battery manufacturer and are one of Tesla’s biggest suppliers. They also make screens, which is probably why the Seal is very Model 3-esque. They are most well known in the west for making iPads for Apple I suppose and are currently the biggest manufacturer of electric cars according to the reviews I’ve watched.

I think we are going to be seeing a lot of these on British roads very soon. Not keen on their other models though, you can tell they are Chinese designs. At least the Seal had a different design team but then it is going for the middle premium sector.

Would you choose the BYD Seal over the BMW i4?

I test drove an i4 and it didn’t really do it for me, plus in this comparison it costs another £5k more than the Seal. I think the Seal is the more interesting car and carries the better tech, but if there was £50k to spend then the performance Model 3 is probably a more sensible option even with its bland aesthetics etc.

As an i3 owner, what is wrong with the i4?
Not really for me. There is very little in common between the i3 and the i4.
Just looks like a big saloon car. I’ll be sticking with my i3 for many more years to come.
It’s a shame BMW stepped away from the design ethos of the i3. Smaller, lightweight. It just ticks so many boxes for me.

I presume it didn't sell well enough (which could also be because it came out too early). How do you feel about the ID.3?

Definitely didn't sell well, not even in its home country. It was too small, quirky, expensive, and on bicycle tyres for the audience. Possibly, even too early on the market, as too many people get hung up on range where they don't even need it. Ultimately, it was too far away from the BMW brand and only suitable really as a small city car, and most people want something more versatile.

They should have spun it off as a separate brand from BMW for sure. I think VW tried (poorly) to do the same with the ID line.

On paper it got the same range as the Nissan Leaf, but cost like 20k more. At least in the US we don't do city cars, even though city cars would fit most people just fine.
