As mentioned, you will have to turn your phone/bluetooth off or your TMY will stay open.

Do you have an apple watch? If so, you can set your watch as a key. Because of how Apple manages the OS, the watch can shutoff the Tesla app to conserve battery power. I have a second screen with my Tesla complications (hard press, swipe left set as active screen), or I open the Tesla app on the watch and I can use my watch as the key. I use it when I am home and leave my wallet and phone inside the house.

I have an AWU 1.
I do have an Apple Watch, I read the watch was spotty to be used as a stand alone key. I would rather just leave my iPhone at home as I am literally 2 mins from the river where I launch. Takes me longer to drive there then it would to watch to it across the street from me. If I could go with just the watch that would be ideal.

It isn't spotty. AW OS simply shuts down the app to conserve battery. Tesla apps just work, they always work, what happens is sometimes Apple shuts it down for battery life (phone and/or watch). Since the AW OS is much more conservative with background running, it just seems like there are issues. Simply open the app, and it works.

Tesla has some of the best software that exists in the automotive industry for both the vehicle and phone/watch. Right now, I don't believe they released an Android wearable app yet though. But the software for the vehicle is fantastic, and their iOS/AWOS apps are fantastic.

That said, I always have my Tesla key in my wallet as a backup, but I have never had to use it in the 2+ years I have owned Teslas. The Tesla made AW app is less than a year old (I had 3rd party AW apps before).

They were decent, but not even small enough! And now they're discontinued and will be replaced by a bigger vehicle.
As I said above, the rumor is the the new Bikt will be reusing the EUV form factor, granted a bit larger than the original Bolt but still on the smaller side.
“Small” doesn’t sell in the US, that unfortunately is reality today

Picked up my 2021 Y yesterday. Great car, solid on the road, quiet and what a great sound system! I don't listen to a lot of music while driving, usually have a YouTube lecture or debate running from my phone. Still have to get the FSD going once the app is going.

I set my phone as a hot spot to have audible and Apple Music going. Can I use YouTube while driving just for the audio? I am assuming not, is there a work around or still have to do it from my iPhone? Just want the audio.

You can not use the Theater app (YouTube video, Disney+,…) while driving. You can use the web browser though, which is kind of slow on the intel based infotainment systems like ours (‘21).

The browser plays the audio and not the video. Loads like it would on a normal website but only the audio comes out as I expected.

A little thing I noticed this morning, the Audible app is not syncing with what I have been listening to on my phone. I am midway between a long audio book, and it was synced yesterday, but this morning it was starting at the beginning. In the Audible app on my phone it is at the right place. Anyway to force it to sync?

Nice to know. I retrofitted SiriusXM in my TMY, so I have the satellite-based app (I have 2 lifetime accounts), and pay for streaming audio with LiveOne, so I haven't needed to try streaming via the web browser. Thanks for the update.

As for Audible, I'm not sure, short of using the bowser instead of the app. One thing to note, there is a known issue with connectivity when first starting your Tesla. If you have wifi where you park, it will join, or if you tether it will join, but it will disconnect when you put it into drive. One of the later OS updates allows you to set your connection to remain with Drive. If not it will disconnect. This is an issue with people who use MyQ for their garage doors and have premium connectivity. There ends up being a time where the vehicle loses connections and can't control things.

One thing may be to switch to a different audio source before you park, so that when you first get in the vehicle it doesn't start in Audible. Once you get driving a bit, switch to Audible and see if it syncs properly. Not really a solution, but something to test to see if maybe it's starting to play before the app even tries to sync.

This is where the argument of having CarPlay/Android Auto has merit.

The last failsafe is to simply use BT and stream from your phone. Since you are listening to an audiobook, it shouldn't require interaction with the phone for most, if not all of your drive. So, once you start it you are good to go, you can pause and play with the Tesla UI. For me, I always have Waze running on my phone (with the setting to send audio through phone BT instead of Audio BT), so I get audio notifications like speed/redlight cameras, police, traffic,...

You just described my situation. I didn't realize it was a bug because my wifi has a hard time getting to the garage being that everything in FL is made of cinder blocks. I just figured it was spotty. Where did you hear about this? I'd love to get some more info on this issue.

One thing I am trying to figure out is how to get my Y to auto join my hotspot created by my iPhone. I remember seeing a video that I cannot find now where they created some shortcut on the iPhone to do this. Anyone have a step by step for this? I have never used the shortcuts on the iPhone

If you are having a hard time connecting to wifi, you may want to put a repeater in the garage. I have an Orbi mesh system, and have an access point in the corner bedroom above my garage (reaches my TMY in the garage, and my TM3 parked in the driveway). I can walk around my 77x100 (which is small) property and have a perfectly strong signal anywhere (I actually have 4 satellites).

Tesla's wifi reception strength is not strong. It is talked about in many Tesla forum posts. They also talk about the cutover from wifi to cellular premium connectivity. This can affect people who use internet-based garage functions like MyQ.

I have homelink in my TM3 and added it to my TMY so I don't have to use MyQ. I also only have it set to auto open when I get home, and not auto close. When I am home and my wife is out and I want to keep the garage door open, I simply put a piece of wood over the trip sensor to keep the door from attempting to close as she arrives.

I think the trick is to have a shortcut to turn on hotspot when your phone connects to your Tesla's BT audio. Then in your Tesla you want to turn on "Remain Connected in Drive" to the hotspot so it will stay connected when you go from P to D.

Try This:

Got to Shortcuts App
Select Automation (at the bottom)
New Automation
Select "Bluetooth"
Select your Tesla (The BT Audio connection, not the Key)
Change "Run After Confirmation" to "Run Immediately" (Not sure which is best, you could try Confirmation after)
Select Next
In Get Started - Select "new Blank Automation"
Search Actions - "Hotspot" select "Set Personal Hotspot"
Click Done

If you are using iOS, the problem is not Tesla. It is a function of iOS. iOS shuts off mobile hotspots after a certain amount of inactivity. Shortcuts is what you use to force iOS to turn your hotspot back on, right when you get into the vehicle.

Another problem may be, that your Tesla is connected to your home wifi, if that is the case it will not drop that connection until you put it in drive (if you turn off "Remain Connected in Drive" for that connection. It should then try to connect to anther wifi if you have the hotspot connection set to "Remain connected in Drive".

makes sense, and I think I have remain connect to my work and home wifi. I made a short cut to turn on hotspot when bluetooth connects to the Tesla so that should work

My guess is turn this off for both work and home. It will drop the connection when you put it in D, and with your hotspot with remain connected in Drive turned on, it will connect to the hotspot.

But note there will be that delay between the two connections that I was talking about. Unless you forget your work and home wifi all together, and manually add and remove it when needed.

EVs are cool, but for me too expensive. Also, I don’t need to have the worry of where to charge on a long trip and if the charging stations work or not.
I think hybrids are currently where it’s at until battery technology improves as well as the grid and stations. I keep reading about solid state batteries.
In 2023 I bought a Honda Accord EX-L Hybrid and get an average of 54 MPG. Love it. Range is over 600 miles on a tank. Has that off the line “oomph” due to the battery.

Oh, believe me, I've considered it. I have Eero and I could put one of the nodes in the garage but it gets very hot in there so I'm concerned. It is a detached garage. I have another wireless node near the window in the back of the home facing the garage but it's not strong enough to get good signal out there. Maybe I'll try just for the heck of it.

I do have MyQ, which works wonderfully and I bet it would work even better if I can get a wireless node out there. The only thing I'm not happy with on the MyQ is that the watch app never seems to be in sync with the phone app. So when I'm out of a walk and come home to my garage I can't open it with my watch. Major bummer because that would be so helpful.

And this all comes back to the drawbacks of being in this townhouse. I know the next place I buy will be a single family with an attached garage. :)

A little pricey, but an option:

Eero Outdoor 7

I have had an orbi in an outdoor shed that gets above its operating temperature for several years without any issue.

So my company car is due to be replaced in a few months. Currently it is a Tesla dual motor 3 series. Current options being considered is the 2025 dual motor Y, not that interested in the 3 series as I live in the uk, and don’t fancy the stalkless new 3 series. Other option is the BMW i5. I had a test drive in the i5 the other day, the i5 is definitely more premium than the Y, and the ride is smoother and more refined. However the i5 did not have adaptive cruise control like the Tesla has as standard, I would need to spec the full Tech pack for that. The Tesla has the advantage of the Tesla network, and the new Y that I have not had a test drive in yet, has better build quality than my current 3 series. It is also lighter and airier cockpit than the i5. Also it felt like I was driving a tank when driving the i5, had to kick it to sport mode to get the same responsiveness of the Tesla. Anyone recently has to decide between the two ? I think the range is likely to be better on the Tesla.

Associate has an i5 m60. It’s the price of a Plaid. (Another associate has the i7, but that’s another story) The i5 is what you would expect from BMW. It’s an electrified version of their ICE equivalent. To me that’s a double edged sword in that that’s what some people want and some people don’t.

I would take a plaid over it. Tesla doesn’t have the German cache as BMW but I like their electric vehicles, while offering a less premium experience than the i5 packs in more technology and the build quality, according to reviews, is excellent.

Yes, attached garages are the best. But sometimes life choices lead one to other configurations. We live in a historic home and are fortunate have a garage at all. It like yours is detached and 50 feet from the nearest home wall. We considered trenching and burying some Cat6 coax from the home to the garage but that was quickly nixed when we found out the cost of hiring it out, or the trenching labor of DIY (I consider myself beyond the age of digging without aftereffects, and trenching 50 feet in our soil could easily be a 1-2 sixpack job, maybe more). So in our home we have 8 eeroPro mesh routers…the now old WiFi5. One of these is in the room closest to the garage and mounted on top of cabinetry on the outside wall. Another eeroPro is in the garage mounted to the wall closest to the home.

The signal is reliable in the garage, though weakened a bit. Some specifics: we subscribe to Internet service that give us 300mbps synchronously, i.e., 300mbps uploads and the same for downloads. In most locations in the home that translates to about 120mbps at WiFi devices. In the garage, we get about 30mbps near the eeroPro in the bay where we have our EVSE. That diminishes a bit to about 20mbps on the other side of the garage. That number is obviously a small fraction of our paid for speeds, but 3-4 times the necessary bandwidth to watch a Netflix 4K video (4-5mbps) without stuttering so definitely sufficient for vehicle OTA updates.

All of that said, it’s working. I do keep watching discounts for the various newer eero routers, and the WiFi 6e versions are leading me to go that direction at some point. The WiFi 7 versions are just stupid expensive; for that money I’d just hardwire everything and be done with it. Cost remains a stumbling block almost regardless of which version because I think I’d need so many devices. Our home with its plaster and lath walls and large wall thickness is a WiFi killer pretty much mandating a router in every room for any kind of reliable service. I’d hate to drill holes through historic walls and floors for cabling, but that may have to happen. And home networking remains an area of mystic confusion to me in the best case.

Ah, thank you. Didn't know they had an outdoor version. I'll keep that in mind. Yea, Eero 7 is a bit pricey right now and I don't know that I have any 7 version devices just yet.

After poking around yesterday, I found a few threads where people claimed to be in even hotter environments and have a node in the garage so I'm going to try that. I figure since my Eero 6s are a few years old so if one died I wouldn't be super broken up about it.
