Mirai is a very rare sight, former co-worker had one and loved it, refueling was like 5 min and from what he told me there was no "queuing up" due to the rarity.
I've only seen a handful in like 10 years in SoCal except for the coworkers one
Just Googled how expensive they are to fill up. I think I’ll stick with an EV!

What happens to the range if you are towing the max weight? Guessing it will be significantly less.

I heard on the radio that a base trim Cybertruck is $40K.

Is that even possible ?

Cybertruck looks better in person but still has some awkward design elements that make it impractical IMO.

Now that Lucid Gravity on the other hand looks real nice. Imagine that huge cockpit display with the next generation Apple Carplay stuff...

My 3 year old daughter saw one on the road yesterday here in Auatin and she called it ugly.
"It ugly daddy. Daddy can not give ugly truck. "

Not that I disagree with her and never planned to get one but man was she adment about it and had to tell me all about it when she got home.

It was when they announced it years ago.

Now the cheapest model is 20k more than orginally promised and the rest are 30k more. Oh and the range specs for all of them are lower than promised.

I would not be surprised if they get rightfully sued for it.

That's a reasonable price for that class of vehicles. Large US pickups range from about $36K to over $100K so $60K is close to the middle of that. I'm amazed that there are so many options and trim levels of large pickups which can produce such a range but I image the profit margins on trucks is really great.

Who knows if lucid is going to be around?the gravity looks nice, but the cyber truck makes a statement. If I were in the market for an electric hauler I would get the cyber truck.

I am SOOOOO ready to get an EV.
And while I looked at others, it is very hard to beat a Tesla.
Just the "gimmicks" alone are a attractive (and I am not a gimmick guy).
It is so UN-like a car.

I am not going in blind, Engineering Explained has great critical videos on his experience with EV's.
He does a good job of a neutral review of the basic, and is critical of somethings, but so far not enough salt to discount a Tesla.

In past I was considering a Leaf and a Volt (and other plug-in). Ironically Prius Plugin is not on lots in Texas, dealer does not say why.
And I do not go to country like I used to, so almost all in a (very big) city.

What you fine folks think?
I've owned and driven a lot of nice cars, BMW 5 series, 3 series, i3, Tesla Model S, 3; I worked for a car company. Also regular cars, I grew up with a Saturn and Hondas.

I can't recommend EVs enough, and Teslas are still the best when it comes to range, despite the recent controversies. There are some gotchas however, and generally the fit and finish of a Tesla is at Honda level (or worse?) but not near German luxury cars like BMW or Mercedes or Porsche.

So, it depends whats important to you, the best EV value is Tesla hands down. If you want something upscale, a BMW i4, i5, or Volvo / Polestar, Mercedes, or Porsche might be preferred, but you will pay more and the range will be worse. Also you don't get NACS connector until 2025, so another point for Tesla, Superchargers are the best.

Lucid is a standout as the best range and better luxury than Tesla, but I haven't tried it personally so I don't know how it compares to German cars and I don't like the exterior styling personally. They're expensive though, but maybe better than a German option right now.

The Japanese brands are really behind at this point, VW and Chevy are meh (Don't buy a front wheel drive EV, its bad engineering, the torque steer is awful), and I've never tried the Chinese brands.

If it were my money, I'd get the new Highland Model 3 (or the Y), or wait for the new BMW 3 Series neue klasse

Edit: did not realize this post was from 2021 lol

Next car I’d buy would be Japanese and electric , I’ve had Mercedes in the past , overpriced overrated unreliable and just living on the badge

Lexus / Honda 4 me in the future thx
Japanese and electric.... maybe 5 years from now you can get that, but they are so behind, I doubt they will be competitive.

Edit: did not realize this post was from 2021 lol, did not mean to flame / revive, I thought it was recent post

Another thing that surprised me was the cost of such vehicles, having always pegged them as utilitarian I'd have expected them to cost around 25-40k, seeing the national sale price average hover around 65k was puzzling to say the least.
In the past, most trucks were utilitarian vehicles that cost less or about the same as an average car. In recent decades many trucks have become personal transportation vehicles with tons of fancy features and fancy prices to go along with them. I suspect that it is getting hard to find a basic utilitarian truck anymore; just as it is hard or impossible to find a truck that isn’t much bigger and heavier than what we used to think of trucks being.

Pickup trucks are a lot less common in the UK for domestic owners. They seem to be used primarily by farmers and people who work in construction and road building. Not sure a Tesla Cybertruck fits these categories so well as the strange aesthetics are its selling point, and it will be massively over priced compared to a Toyota Hilux or Nissan Navarra. I’m sure i’ll see the odd one driving around for novelty.

I’d be interested to see how it fares on the pedestrian safety tests here. The front end looks sharp and unforgiving.

I think the Cybertruck looks ridiculous. But what it can do is pretty impressive. I mean that video on the drag strip against a Porsche whilst towing the same car was pretty impressive. Yet highly irresponsible as well as an official video as nobody should tow and speed like that.

In the UK pickup trucks used to be more popular due to special tax rules. When it can haul 1tonne it was classed as a commercial vehicle and thus benefit in kind tax was limited. That caused the rise of pickup trucks here as well. With Nissan the first that drove like a normal car (Toyota and Mitsubishi were horrible and agricultural by comparison), and then later joined by Volkswagen and Mercedes. I took advantage as well, and it was handy towing a powerboat :)

But the tax advantages are currently still just about with a nice EV.

I stopped chasing the tax benefit and value my own comfort more nowadays. 😎 So are just driven by what I want and like.

And no the cyber truck is not what I want.

I sold my Ram 1500 and traded in my Audi A4 for my TMY. I already had my TM3. So, we are a Tesla household. I am not a huge fan of the look of the cyber truck, but everything in that package solves the needs for me. Pickup truck, check, towing ability, check, access to Supercharging network, check, Service Center access near me (4 within 30 miles), check, Tesla UI double check. If I were in the market for a pickup truck, I would pick the cyber truck over there Rivian RT1 (only because of current charging network and service center access). The Rivian RT1 isn't far behind, and it does look better (except for the headlights).

Yes, the range would drop like 50%, just as my TMY does when I tow my 6x12 trailer. But with supercharging and the batteries being optimized on arrival, charging is really a 20-minute stop. The only issue right now is, not all supercharging locations have pull through chargers (or they may be occupied by vehicles who aren't towing), so trailer removal to charge would be a regular activity.

This is an interesting take on the Cybertruck, it seems overall positive though. Good production value in the video...

I don't know where you get your EA charges, but mine is an absolute nightmare.

Since almost all EV manufacturers have parterned up with EA for free charges, there are no available working chargers and always a huge line.

I have given up with Electrify America.

Even though I have free charging on my Ford account, I have not used it because the lines are horrendous in So Calif.

I charge at EVGo and Shell ReCharge.

EVGo has the fastest 350kWh chargers and no line - always available when I pull up.

Glad to pay instead of waiting for a free charge...

I'm in NY/NJ and ours is paid, not free. There are definitely more electric cars in SoCal than here and the main one I go to has 10 stations. So the longest I ever had to wait was 20 min. The ones here range from 150-350kWH. The EVGo & Chargepoints are slow AF and max 2-3 stations, one is always broken. And Shell doesn't have charging stations around here unfortunately. Guess it's about where you live!

The only reason it takes long for me is because of the limitations of the Bolt. It doesn't charge as fast as other electric cars.
