See if this helps...

This first map is from Tesla's website showing only the Tesla Superchargers that allow non-Telsa charging at the moment:

And this maps shows all Tesla Superchargers:

So my thought was... if all those Superchargers are opened to all EVs... that will surely help the charging situation. It can't hurt, right?

:)
yup, certainly true

It would help non Tesla drivers for sure. But not Tesla drivers.
Right now their software can direct you to a charging point (in a Tesla) where there is more availability. As soon as they allow non Tesla’s onto the network, they lose the ability to know who is going to which charger (yes they can still see which are in use, but not quite the same.
Sales of Tesla are directly linked to this technology and the supercharger network.
Here in the UK there are a limited number open to non Tesla’s. Unless the government forces the issue, I doubt that will ever change.

But there are plenty of others to choose from. And as we have said many times, the majority of people charge their vehicles at home. So it’s not that much of an issue.

Even now with many open to choose from on my routes, I've never used a Tesla supercharger. Why? They are pricier to use and locations for my journeys are akward. Ioinity gives me stable speeds, and only costs 35c per unit. Fastned is my next favourite. But also, as has been explained many a time, the fast majority of the journeys are to/from home.

Sure a few years ago Tesla had the upper hand, but at least here in Europe those times are well and truly gone.

In the US, it's not even close. There are L2 chargers all over the place, but when it comes to L3+, Tesla is still king. We also have different charging plugs (CCS1 vs NACS). For now, to use Tesla's L3 chargers with a vehicle with a CCS port, you can only use Supercharges with the "magic dock" which, for others, have the NACS and the CCS plugs built in. We have a couple in Long Island NY.

I've never heard of anyone with a Lucid Air having range anxiety. 🤷🏽‍♂️

It's because you've never heard from all 3 Lucid Air owners... lol

They have charging issues, there are lots of videos of Lucid owners who like everything about the car except charging.

And lettuce (and tomato) not forget the delightful CHAdeMO L3 stations. Still exist, even in the US.

US Tesla buyer question:

What are your thoughts on the new 2024 M3 Highland Tesla ?

Would you buy an older '23 M3 with the full tax credit before 2023 ends or get the '24 M3 with half credit applied at time of purchase (POS)?

Telsa M3 Highland is now showing on the US site for orders:

Still no performance version though.

No. But since I was initially discouraging @4sallypat from waiting, I think it is only fair that I come in and post when the highland was available. I did not believe they would have made the switch so quickly. But then again, once they lost the federal tax credit on the 3's, there was no reason to wait to retool anymore. They have to keep riding the wave of sales...

The new body style being available will drive current owners who were on the fence about trading up to a newer model to make the change. That with the sale of the trade ins should help keep sales going for a while.

I imagine the trade-ins will be sold to a lot of first time EV buyers (I bought both my Tesla's off lease).

Interesting. Thanks!

What are Tesla's plans to allow non-Teslas to use their Supercharger network?

You're right... there are much fewer non-Tesla Superchargers right now!

Tesla is supposed to open up SC access to Ford EVs next month (February) to Early Access members (I am a member).

Then the plan is roll out opening SC access to the remaining Ford EV owners in April 2024.

We are waiting to see if Ford will send us CCS1 owners a NACS adapter or not.

Probably will have to buy the adapter.

At least I have about $500 in Ford Pass points to get it for free.

Yes we are waiting for our local Tesla location to offer the M3 Highland for a test drive.

Wife wants one if the promised changes are made (sound levels inside, road noise, suspension & interior changes).

She was not a fan of the original M3.

I always think of the BMW M3 when I read M3.

As a former BMW owner, I do too, but when was the last time a BM3 really hit the news? I'm a member of a BMW forum, most of the long-term members have moved on from BMWs. They all hate the look of the newer BMWs (Blow fish mouth).

The look is growing on me, but I hated it at first too...

I agree with the following:
BM3 = BWM M3
TM3 = Tesla M3

The BM3 has a much smaller group of customers... I think there have been >1M TM3's sold since 2017 vs. something like 300k BM3 since 1988...

A colleague has one. But it’s an older one. He doesn’t consider my BMW i3s a BMW. From my perspective it’s the best one they ever made!

Oh it’s huge now. The BMW M3 Estate especially is getting a lot of love. I’m thinking of one as well as its nice and low for my dog to get into 😇🤣

Outside of those in the BMW world, no one even knows about there being (or soon to be) an BM3 Touring... I would say majority of car owners in the world do not know what a BM3 is...

Find me someone who doesn't know about a TM3...

🤣

The BMW M3 is iconic in Europe and just about every major car reviewer has tested the M3 Touring over the past 12 months. I’ve seen a few on the roads here in the UK. The M3 has been hugely successful in motorsports like Touring Cars and DTM since the 80’s.

It’s quite possible the performance end of BMW and perhaps Audi are just not as exported or sold in the US therefore they are unknown. I know from an Audi perspective the ‘S’ was available in the US but not the RS for some reason.

You are a "car guy" though. The average person who isn't, may have heard of an BM3, but probably doesn't even think about it. I'm a car guy too, so I'm all over car stuff. But in the end, BM3 production numbers are small compared to TM3 in the few years that TM3 have existed. There are way more people, even in Europe that know what a TM3 is vs being able to tell the difference between a regular 3 series vs an BM3.

We do get RS' here, just not all of the different RS' and not every year's RS.

I guess it’s one of those global differences. I would hazard a guess that people here call many electric cars a Tesla just like they would call a vacuum cleaner a Hoover. But not that many would know the TM3 vs Y vs S vs X by model name. It sells well here, but then again so does Toyota.
