The reality is what’s the oldest cars you see on the road regularly today? 15 years I would say.
That’s how long it will take.

We have old cars on the road in the US... We are a car nation.

Yesterday I saw an early 90's Honda Accord. 2 years ago, I sold my 1985 Mercedes Benz 380SE. Last year I sold my 2003 e46 BMW 325i and I traded in my 2008 B7 A4 2.0T towards my TMY.

My motorcycle is a 2009 Honda VTX 1300R.

Well there are always older cars from the 60’s etc. but they aren’t seen that often. I’m talking about lots of cars of that age.

And every nation is a car nation.

I would say it is at least daily that I see a car from the 90's. It isn't even slightly odd. We don't have almost 300 million registered vehicles by only having vehicles <= 15 years old (not counting farm, or other unregistered vehicles).

From my experience, I would not say every nation is a car nation... Owning a car is a fundamental part of an American's life since we don't have a large enough mass transit system. If you live outside of NYC/DC/Chicago or a few other cities, you have to have a car to function.

Boy, I haven't owned a car for years and while enthusiastic about EVs, I can only imagine what a noob would think about the anti-EV misinformation on the thread about Apple canceling their Apple Car project. It's hilarious and sad at the same time.
yea, there was quite a bit of FUD in that thread and the media is contributing quite a bit too these days ...

EVs are perfectly fine today for at least half of the people, at a minimum those who drive less than 200 miles per day and have the ability to charge, either at home or at work.
The charging infrastructure has ways to go, esp for those who don't have a garage/carport/driveway. it'll get there ...

I’m seeing a lot of people across the internet and even on threads here discussing the Apple car that has been pulled, suggesting the EV market is slowly starting to die. It is obviously propaganda, but is being repeated a lot. In terms of the health of the market in the UK, I found this video interesting:

Nice to see the topic discussed with a market data analysis thrown in for good measure.

I keep my cars and trucks until they no longer function. The last new vehicle I purchased was a 2012 Corolla from a used-car dealer. Its was under the Toyota warranty. Still driving a 2001 Silverado truck. It has some rust in the lower body panels and fenders, but that's about it. My wife drives a 2010 RAV4 V6, and she refuses to upgrade to a newer model :). The newest vehicle we have is a 2013 Tundra truck we inherited from our oldest son how passed last year, so we plan to keep it until it does not run any longer.

Tesla is leading the EV market in Europe, but China is leading the sale of EV's. Al least in 2023 and now:

The average fleet age of cars in the United States is over 12 years old and getting older.

It is going to take a lot longer than 12 years for most of the market to be EVs. I would say I regularly see cars pushing 20 years old. I can spot a 90’s ere car pretty easily but by the 2000 it not as easy to see at a glance.

Yes, and my father has a ‘32 Ford pickup, but they are pretty rare. What you get after about 15–20 years is the long tail of a few survivors that last longer than most of their generation. When is the last time you saw a PT Cruiser? They are visually distinctive and about 20-25 years ago, they were common as hell, but it’s been a couple of years since I saw one.

I saw one in 2024.

If you want to bring up vehicles of the era from that automaker, I 100% guarantee you have seen several Jeep Wranglers from the 2000's, even if you didn't realize it (since there are only subtle changes). The TJ designation. They are ALL over the road still. Also, Town & Country (Minivans). One of my employees has a Voyager.

If you look at Honda (Accord), Toyota (Camry, corolla), Nissan (maxima), Ford (F150, taurus), Ram (Dodge at the time), and Chevy (pickups), vehicles that actually sold LARGE numbers, a TON of them are still on the road across the US as daily driver/work horses.

Porsche 911. Shape hasn’t really changed in my lifetime!

Yeah, I have NO idea about 911's. The fact that there are different numbers means nothing to me. They all look the same, and I would love to have one, but if a line of them were parked I would only be able to say, "that's old, that's new, I think."

Easier to tell from the size of wheels or the interior. Avoid any with a tapedeck!

I've had the fully electric Renault ZOE since April 2018, so for almost 6 years now.

It's my first car. Couldn't be happier with it, really! It has been especially pleasant to drive for the first 3 years, when the electricity cost was half of what it's now. I'm really surprised that EVs get so much negative press.

Very keen to upgrade to Tesla Model 3 Long Range, but these at 3 years old and low mileage are £30k used, so quite expensive. ZOE was cheap to buy, as we benefited from the full government grant and it's battery leased.

Well one thing to remember about the PT Cruiser is they were Chryslers and a POS and had a lot of things that caused it to break.
That being said I see quit a few 2000's Honda Accords and I see a fair number of 2010-2012 Honda Crosstours along with a fair number of B15 Sentra that went out of production in 2006. I can spot those cars as I drove a B15 Sentra so its design stands out to me. I miss my 2004 Spec V and then I know what the 2010 honda Accord look like. As for the Crosstour I drove a 2013 model for 7 years and know the minor difference between a 2012 vs 2013 model. All those cars I listed are over 12 years old now still on the road and a surprising number of thing look really good.

Looks to be in nice condition. The negative press is hardly surprising. It’s a sad reflection of the world we live in.
Negative stories generate more engagement than positive ones. That’s all the person putting the story out wants is engagement.
Why let facts get in the way of a good story?
Then there is the fact that many petroleum companies heavily sponsor anti EV articles.

Looks good, but you have to come to market with a working product. You don't have a Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X to fall back on like Tesla has with the Cybertruck...

I would still take a Cybertruck in a heartbeat... As is...

I’ve learned it’s best to just avoid and not listen to the EV experts, ie those who have never driven an EV. They know everything and it’s all bad.

Your car looks in good nick and you’ve clearly had a good experience with it. I was browsing Tesla Model 3’s earlier on Autotrader and there are a few 3-4 year old long range models for £22k-£25k with less than 30k miles. Depends on your budget but they are apparently a reliable secondhand buy according to WhatCar.

My only experience with Tesla has been second hand purchased directly from Tesla. My '19 LR Model 3 and '21 Model Y LR both have been very reliable. Both had <30k miles on them.

I think we’d have to add a bit more money to be buying secondhand from Tesla, that is if that’s even an option in the UK. There’s hundreds on Autotrader though and from dealers at decent prices. Most are likely ex company cars etc. I could afford one now but don’t have the need yet to be honest, I was just browsing as I often look at secondhand cars. I’m not ruling out one more ICE car before going electric though. My normal commute is only 28 miles so I don’t do a lot unless I drive the occasional long distance with work.

I only buy used cars, never once bought new. Buying used from Tesla here in the US gives us an extra year (or 10k miles) of the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty. They also turned on Acceleration Boost and FSD.

I always buy used (Certified Pre-Owned) to take advantage of the extended warranty that is offered.

Here in Europe they strip free charging (if the car has had it), enable enhanced autopilot (but with FSD hardware), remainder of original warranty (which was 4 years) plus 1 year extra; and during that year also pan-european roadside assistance and recovery, and a 30 day premium connect trial.

But what irks me is that you can't see and try the cars, especially considering the bad experiences I've had with all Tesla's so far where Tesla themselves don't seem to realise they are broken. You can exchange within 14 days, but you don't know whether you have a good one until you get it and paid in full. And when rejecting is there another? Nope, don't like the model at all....
