A year ago this month, we spent $42K on a 2024 Honda CR-V (which now has 14,500 miles on it).

We spent that money because the POS crap we had needed about $5000 in repairs and we were not going to put that kind of money into that crappy car (a 2017 Buick Encore). We got $8K for that thing and were GLAD to see it go.
A year ago it was 2023 🤷‍♂️ but I hear you. I’m no fan of Tesla, but I’d have had a Model Y any day over an old skool basic ICE SUV. Similar purchase price, super cheap to run. Loads of space. Great tech. It’s not for nothing the worlds most car.

NYC area. It was 56 degrees F (13 C) this morning, and the high today is 81 degrees F (27 C). My Temperature is set to 69 degrees F (20 C). The only thing I have to change is the vent flow to my son in the back seat (2 years old in a forward-facing car seat). When it is hot, I point it at him, when his cold, I move it away from him. This is only because his feet are close to the air vent.

Why doesn't your auto climate control not adjust the fan speed enough to make it comfortable for you?

I don’t always use it because I find it inconsistent at keeping condensation off the windows. Different in our EV as it’s more modern.

Yes, a year ago was 2023. It may surprise you to know that model years don't always line-up with calendar years. For example, it is now 2024 and you can buy 2025 model year cars.

Congratulations! It's not what EVERYBODY wants.

Sure. But they were not offering their car for free, which is what it would take for me to get one.

I said "Going Rates" (for cars), not "Going Interest Rates".

A brand new TMY Performance is $45k. You said you just spent $42k on a CR-V a year ago. So, you can't say you wouldn't pay with the "Going Rates" as you just did. So, are you are saying you wouldn't spend that kind of money on an EV?

I thought I was clear with "Going Rates", since my post was talking about buying an EV:

"If someone wanted to GIVE ME a brand new EV - I'd consider accepting it. PAY for one? At going rates? No chance, whatsoever."

But yes, that's what I'm saying. I wouldn't buy an EV at the current prices being charged for EVs. The most I would currently pay for an EV is MAYBE $5000, and even then, I'd have to think hard about it.

First, at least here in the US, cars prices are not described as "Rates", the term "rate" is always reserved for interest. I would expect to hear you say "not with these PRICES."

But clearly the EV prices are not that far off of ICE (at least with Teslas).

Saying you would only pay $5k for an EV, just means that you are biased against EVs. So, not sure why you are jumping into an EV based thread. Not saying you shouldn't, but just seems odd.

Have you really never heard "going rate" outside of interest rates? Really? This may help:

going rate (plural going rates)
  1. (idiomatic) The current standard or usual price, rate, or salary for something.
He did a terrible job, and then charged more than twice the going rate for it!

At any rate (regular rate, not going rate) - I am sorry my use of the English Language doesn't meet with your approval.

"Saying you would only pay $5k for an EV, just means that you are biased against EVs."

Yes!! Yes I am!

"So, not sure why you are jumping into an EV based thread."

It didn't occur to me that OP was only interested in group think when he asked the question, "What you fine folks think?".

We are all entitled to our opinions. EV’s are great. They aren’t noisy, don’t pump out fumes or need servicing as often. Generally they are cheaper to run.

I’d encourage you to try some before deciding against them if you haven’t already. Personally like most (all?) EV drivers I’ll never go back to an ICE vehicle. I’ve moved on.

I don't CARE about any of that stuff. See, that's the thing. What is important to one person may be entirely and completely irrelevant to someone else. Amazing, eh?

Personally, I will DIE before I ever own an EV. I will die owning a 2007 Jeep Wrangler. Hell, I may even die IN a 2007 Jeep Wrangler. Ya just never know!

I didn’t assume anything. That’s why I said if you haven’t already.

I’m sorry you feel so strongly against EV’s. It’s a shame some people can’t get their head around the fact we can’t keep burning oil to get from a to b like we have and expect the planet to not suffer.

Yet you choose to drive a Honda CRV 🤣🤷‍♂️ Just shows we all like something different.

Look everyone is entitled to an opinion. You got to realise those that you come jumping into a thread with an unexplained irrational dislike to EV cars, and use an argument that was debunked in a single response. And even now you aren’t contributing anything or providing any explanation or elaborate why you react the way you do. I find that a bit odd.

Why do you assume that?

Maybe:
  • They simply don't care
  • They care, but are not willing to suffer a personal cost to address the issue
  • They realize the the actions of any one individual are extraordinarily unlikely to affect a large and complex outcome.
  • The realize that an unpleasant outcome is beyond their lifetime, and therefore they have no practical stake in the outcome?
The typical response to those bullet points is "that's selfish!!" And I will say "Yes it is!!" For the most part, humans ARE selfish and do what is in their own best interest. Just like other animals. You'll never see the family of lions willingly offering up their dinner too the group of hungry hyenas standing nearby.

I'm sorry - what argument did I use that was "debunked" ???

I merely said that I don't want an EV. I'm not sure I even gave a reason why, did I? I'll have to go back and look.

UPDATE: I did go back and look. As far as I can tell, I didn't give an reason for not wanting an EV.

I’d counter that humans are a little more evolved than lions.

I try not to be selfish. But each to their own.

Why not state your reasons then?
Nobody asked :)

But it seems like you're asking - so I will give you a list - even though it's highly probable you'll simply dismiss it for one reason or other. This list of reasons why I won't buy an EV is in no particular order:
  • My current car has about 120K miles on it and is perfectly functional for my purposes. It is in good repair and will last for many years, with minimal anticipated maintenance and repair costs.
  • Not that I really care about the "environmental issues" at play - but I would argue that in the overall scheme of things, it is better for me to continue driving it, rather than selling it to someone else to drive AND incurring the environmental cost of the production of a new EV for me to drive.
  • It has also been paid off for years and I don't want to go into debt just to buy a car.
  • I don't need a new car and I'm EXTRAORDINARILY UNLIKELY to need a new car before I die.
  • At roughly 5,000 miles/year, I don't drive enough miles to make the "savings on gas" to be an important factor in decision-making.
  • Given how much I drive, there is NO WAY I can EVER justify the cost of depreciation on a new car. This is doubly so, given how long I would drive any new car that I would buy.
  • I could not replace my current vehicle with an EV alternative at any price even remotely close to what I would be willing to pay. The closest thing to it would probably be a Rivian, which starts at what, $70K? And then I have the cost of replacing the bumpers with steel bumpers, adding a lift kit, better tires, a winch, etc. etc. etc. While one might be able to get the cheapest EV known to man for $30K or whatever, it would not be an equivalent replacement for my Jeep.
  • Even if ELECTRICITY WERE FREE, I got FREE TIRES FOR LIFE and the EV had ZERO MAINTENANCE COSTS AT ALL, the break-even point (compared with gas and maintenance on my Jeep) on the cheapest new EV on the market exceeds my current life expectancy - by far.
  • Any savings in "maintenance costs" on an EV is nominal in my view, and just doesn't provide enough savings to be an important factor in decision-making. Even if it were somehow $1000/year (which is WAY more than I actually pay for maintenance on my car), it's just not enough to move the needle
  • I do my own service on my vehicle. I would not feel comfortable doing service (such as brakes) on an EV, leading to costs that I would otherwise not have.
  • I can do a LOT of repairs on my current vehicle for what a monthly payment on a new vehicle would be.
  • I don't want to have to remember to plug-in or un-plug my car when I get home. I have a hard enough time remembering to plug in my phone, which is why it is low on battery most of the time.
  • If I did want to plug in my car at home, I'd have to run an extension cord from my front porch, through the yard, over the fence and out to the public street - and then undo that every time I wanted to unplug it and go somewhere. Seems like a pain in the ass.
  • I used to live in Alaska - where it is so cold that you had to plug your car in when leaving it for a long period of time, otherwise, it would be frozen and not start when you returned. On more than one occasion, I forgot to plug it in and returned to a frozen car. Even worse, I've forgot to UNPLUG and damaged car and/or the "headbolt heater unit" that it was plugged into. I can just imagine the unpleasantness of doing that with an EV.
  • They typically do not come with a spare tire. I will not buy ANY car that doesn't come with a spare tire. I didn't buy the Buick TourX - a vehicle I was EXTREMELY HOT FOR - for this specific reason. I went there, cash in hand, ready to buy. No spare tire? No sale.
  • They typically come with "fancy technology" that I have no interest in and have found SO DISTRACTING that I felt unsafe driving such cars.
  • I've had two bad experience with EVs. These experiences included things like the distracting technology, having to find a place to plug it in and charge it, waiting around for it to charge up, etc. Overall, I just find them to be completely unpleasant to me.
So there - you can start "debunking" my concerns and personal values and tell me how irrational it all is. Have at it.

In the meantime - consider that, at no time - have I tried to convince anyone else that THEY should not drive an EV, or that THEY are somehow "wrong" for choosing to do so. I also fully admit that I am a usual case and that my arguments do not apply to everyone. However, I don't claim that they do, either.

Some of your arguments are very valid. Im not going to go through them all as you have clearly made up your mind.
I’m also not keen on car loans. Never had one in fact on any of the cars I’ve owned. I’ve always bought second hand.

One I will tell you that is great for EV owners though. You mention forgetting to plug in your ICE car so it heats up for you. On my (and many other) EV’s you just tell it what time your leaving and it will heat or cool your car ready for when you leave. So I never have to defrost the car in winter. I love it!

Can we change the name of the thread to ‘entertaining individuals that have no interest in ever buying an EV but like telling EV owners about it’?
lol. Funny thing is I have zero interest in ever buying a PC or android phone. But I never go on threads about them saying they are not for me. Just doesn’t seem a worthwhile exercise.

I can’t say I do either, I don’t know enough about Android phones to comment, although a lot of my friends now have them in recent years. Preordered a 16 Pro Max so i’ll likely have the micky taken out of me lol. But no, it’s a bit random doing products down when someone has no experience of using them or ever owning them, especially cars.

If the topic had been "EV fans only...." or if the OP hadn't asked "What do you think" or had said, "I only want to hear from people who are planning to buy an EV" - then I wouldn't have bothered.

I guess I made the mistake of thinking "what do you think?" was inviting a broad range of opinions to be offered. Oh well :)

It is open to everyone, but you haven't exactly been having a conversation. You were being a bit cryptic, so it was hard to understand. We are open to people not wanting EVs, they are NOT for everyone. But if you want to have a conversation about it, it didn't seem that way from your posts...
