I mean, granted if you own the M1 iPad Pro, then your set for at least 10 years since that's how long its going to take before iPadOS does something. Look at the bright side. The M1 iPad Pro is the ultimate future proof. What more can they do next year? 32 GB of RAM/4TB storage and 64GB/8TB storage. LOL.

Unlike the Mac line-up, Apple is not going to do anything going forward. I say keep your M1 iPad Pro's and enjoy them for the next 10+ years.

See y'all in 2031!

you know apple will find a reason to make you want to upgrade. They'll lock a software feature behind their new chip and you're going to want it.

And that's what I wanted for today. I don't mind that. I mentioned in another thread. I don't buy products with promise of software updates, but it would have been nice to have seen at least 1 feature that is exclusive. For Ex. proper monitor support.

What’s weird is a lot of people came to the same realization they should have had with apple products for years now. Apple’s been playing this game with their phones for years. There’s really no super compelling reason to upgrade every year or every two years, but… people do so anyway.

From iPhone 11 to 12 meant creating hdr video. I take lots of my kids and the difference is compelling. Also 5g is significant although I’m sure it’s niche.

Others couldn’t give a crap less of course.

When it comes to new iPad being able to view and edit hdr content properly can be compelling. Or not if you don’t care.

This is why I had a hard time deciding to return. I liked that feature but not the form factor. But I really want a smaller iPad and oled and the beat goes on. Or even better an xdr MacBook later in year.

Bizarre discussion, in a way. The 2021 12.9 is all about the screen, not some future software. It’s the screen! And it is phenomenal. Worth the upgrade just for that — not to mention the speed!

I’m “cancelling” my order that I was prepared to place today if they had taken more advantage of the M1 with today’s announcements. I’m happy with my 2018 iPP, and the M1 iPad still doesn’t offer enough compelling reasons for me to upgrade yet. If I could do all the current iPad things, plus situationally plug in and compile code, that would be amazing. I can still do that via VNC though.

When people don’t understand profit margins..going M1 for their ipad pro is far better option than building another SoC
Nobody should buy a product in future believing that next software update will bring what you want
Next time buy after you see what you want. Apple didn’t promise anything
At least ipados15 is starting good with swift making apps and now limiting the Ram to 12gb instead of 5/app

Many of us are still waiting to get our M1 iPad Pros later this month or next month. Who is planning to cancel their order now that we've seen iPadOS 15? I am debating. I ordered the iPad Pro 12.9 M1 but I still have my 2018 which works great. The extra ram was something I was really looking forward to having but I was hoping to get real external monitor support for iPadOS 15. Unfortunately that's not happening.

Anyone still on the fence? Have you cancelled already? If IPadOS is locked at 5GB RAM, what is the point of having 8GB or even 16GB RAM?
Because it likely won't always be that way. Apple wouldn't have engineered it into the machine if they didn't have long-term plans for enhancements on those particular units.

Anyone who buys an iPad this expensive is the same person who will buy the latest shiny iPad in a couple of years.

I had accidentally broke the screen of my iPad Pro (purchased Oct 2020), when a ceiling lamp suddenly fell onto it. The repair costs are 541€ for the refurbished, so pretty insane. I can find it new for 730€, while the M1 is around 866€

Which one would you purchase if you were me?

The iPad has been held back by the OS for years, all IPP versions with MK have had the form factor and horse power to be a true laptop alternative/killer and I think Apple have recognised that will probably only eat into MacBook sales (as opposed to Windows laptops) so have kept the iPadOS handbrake on.

True, but……..

since it is not today that Apple gives use software for the new iPad pro, why not just wait until Apple gives us the software than purchase a beefier iPad if you still have the 2018 and 2020 model? Saves a lot of money. It’s going to be approximately another year before the New iPadOS 16 come out and that means for another year you can hold off and see what happens then.

I was waiting until WWDC to decide whether or not to replace my 2018 iPad Pro. I figured they had to do something to utilise the power of the M1. From what I saw they didn't do anything. The iPad Pros are already overpowered. They showed me zero reason to upgrade.

I've cancelled my intention to order one, if that counts. Given the absolutely insane markup Apple charges here in Sweden, and given how pathetic iPad OS is, I'm going to stick with my 10.5" Pro.

Since Apple steadfastly refuses to unlock the potential of the machine and allow me to use it for actual work, I mostly only use it to surf the web in bed and watch Netflix while I work out anyway. There are any number of Android tablets with beautiful OLED screens that could do either of those things just as well as the iPad Pro for a fraction of the price.

Apple is working you.

If they went full potato on MacOS features for iOS15 THEN released new MacBook Pros in a few months the sales would tank.

Macbook's cost more. Period.

Next year you'll get the MacOS updates for iOS. Mark it down.

Other than being much faster, having double the RAM (model depending), having the XDR screen (12.9), having a 4/4 big/LITTLE architecture, 5G on the Cellular versions…

Yup - no features above a 2018 or 2020. None at all…
The problem is the RAM has no effect on day to day usage for 99% of iPad users. Your safari tabs will reload a little less often than 6GB/4GB models.

People were hoping for a bigger upgrade to the OS. Still no proper external display support. Still no Apple pro apps on iPad.

I'm running the beta and everything is much nicer with the multitasking improvements, but I was hoping for something that would make me want to upgrade from my 2020 to the M1, but there just isn't anything more that I can do with my iPad as a software developer that I couldn't do last week. That is what people were hoping for. Apple still wants to sell everyone an iPad and a Mac, even though their iPad's now cost more than a Mac.

This is my opinion only
the M1 is like putting corvette engine in Ford escort, if you really don't use it in full potential

OMG!!! They released the details for iPadOS 15!!! CANCEL!!! CANCEL!!! CANCEL!!! CANCEL!!!

Why?

It doesn't make much sense to me to cancel because of what was released yesterday. People knew it was coming. People knew it would be a mixed bag of good and bad. People that are "CANCEL!!! CANCEL!!! CANCEL!!!" should have never ordered in the first place, right? For me, I wish I had waited a little bit longer rather than have pulled the trigger sooner! (I also wish I had bought the smaller 11", but...)

Every phone / computer / tablet manufacturer does this.. Samsung, Microsoft, LG, ect.. It's not just Apple.. They are in the business of making money and in order to stay in business, they have to keep making it.
