OMG!!! They released the details for iPadOS 15!!! CANCEL!!! CANCEL!!! CANCEL!!! CANCEL!!!

Why?

It doesn't make much sense to me to cancel because of what was released yesterday. People knew it was coming. People knew it would be a mixed bag of good and bad. People that are "CANCEL!!! CANCEL!!! CANCEL!!!" should have never ordered in the first place, right? For me, I wish I had waited a little bit longer rather than have pulled the trigger sooner! (I also wish I had bought the smaller 11", but...)
Why doesn't it make sense to cancel? A lot of people ordered, hoping Apple would announce more than they did. They didn't get what they hoped for or needed, so why keep the order? I personally waited until after the keynote yesterday to see if anything announced would make it worth ordering a 16 GB version. There wasn't, so I ordered an 8 GB / 256 GB 12.9 that will be here tomorrow.

Every phone / computer / tablet manufacturer does this.. Samsung, Microsoft, LG, ect.. It's not just Apple.. They are in the business of making money and in order to stay in business, they have to keep making it.
Exactly. Of course, I still end up ordering one every other year because my battery starts to degrade. Aside from modest camera improvements (nice, but not essential) and a faster processor (which isn't really needed for me for how I use my phone) I could go 4 or 5 years if the batteries held up.

The only retort I have is when I made the mistake of tool shopping with the wife.

I needed a larger set of sockets, and her idea was to just buy the socket I needed, and not spend the 'big money' for the whole set. 'Because I never know what I'll need in the future'. So buy a new iPad, or not. If you need one, get something that will fit the future, not something that will make do. At least that makes sense to me.

If there are two different memory levels for the new iPad, why get the smaller unless it comes down to cost. Releasing the larger memory, to me, seems a way to future proof the purchase. *shrug*

I had accidentally broke the screen of my iPad Pro (purchased Oct 2020), when a ceiling lamp suddenly fell onto it. The repair costs are 541€ for the refurbished, so pretty insane. I can find it new for 730€, while the M1 is around 866€

Which one would you purchase if you were me?
In your case, I would go with the 2021. Repurchasing the 2020 will be like a double investment for the same hardware. For an additional 133€, you have a significant upgrade.

The problem is the RAM has no effect on day to day usage for 99% of iPad users. Your safari tabs will reload a little less often than 6GB/4GB models.

I have the 2021 1TB (been wanting the storage since 2018). None of my 93 Safari tabs have reloaded plus the spreadsheet I had left open a week ago in Excel is still there.

Apps and tabs I was actively using used to reload whenever I switched between apps on the 2017 iPad Pro (A10X/4GB RAM) so I'm quite happy that doesn't appear to be an issue now. Heck, sometimes I've even had the inactive app in split view reload/crash.

Love mine, definitely not returning it. Two big reasons I bought it was some weird ghost touch issue on my old 2018, and double the RAM. I get very few app refreshes nowadays. And if Apple decides to overhaul iPadOS in the future, well, I guess that’ll be exciting, but I’m not holding my breath.

I did think about it, but in the end it's also $600 more to go from an 8/256 to a 16/1TB. I agree that more memory is likely future proof, but since it looks like it will be a while before anything can take advantage of it, I'll save the difference knowing I can always trade in and supplement with the savings if needed.

And thinking about 'future proof', them releasing one model with more ram is perhaps a little odd, but I'm sure it would be needed with the larger storage space, so 'future proof' isn't probably a good reason, more 'quicker' because of the added space.

It does provide a benefit now for multitasking though. Personally, I don't even use particularly RAM heavy apps (apart from Safari) but I do appreciate how it's been able to keep multiple apps and tabs in memory.

With that said, 8GB is still a very good upgrade over the 4GB RAM on most 2015-2018 iPad Pro models. If one doesn't need the storage, then doesn't make much sense to spend $$$ extra just for 16GB RAM.

Of course, if Apple just added swap support to iPadOS, then 8GB vs 16GB won't matter much. There won't be any reloads similar to Mac/Linux/Windows.

You don't need 8GB RAM just to support 1-2TB storage. Maybe if they had an 8TB iPad, sure (SSDs with DRAM usually use 1GB RAM : 1TB NAND).

ordered 16gb 1 tb version. Can't imagine what apple could do to make this a better iPad Pro for the next 5 or more years. So this will be what I have for a long time and in that time, I am betting that Apple opens up the abilities of this model.

I can imagine loads of things that can happen, I am expecting them to do something fun next that will get me to replace my 2021 model.

Don’t give Apple ideas for a $10k 8tb iPad…

Meh, they can sell it. Doesn't mean I have to buy it.

As long as a configuration is available that meets my usage and budget, I don't really care what they do on the high end.

Now if Apple increases the price of the 1-2TB model even more, then I'd probably stop buying iPad Pros or maybe just wait until they're available for a hefty discount via Apple certified refurb store.

I mean, granted if you own the M1 iPad Pro, then your set for at least 10 years since that's how long its going to take before iPadOS does something. Look at the bright side. The M1 iPad Pro is the ultimate future proof. What more can they do next year? 32 GB of RAM/4TB storage and 64GB/8TB storage. LOL.

Unlike the Mac line-up, Apple is not going to do anything going forward. I say keep your M1 iPad Pro's and enjoy them for the next 10+ years.

See y'all in 2031!
Apple can make miniscule changes to the ipad and Apple fans will still purchase it. Change only the CPU, they buy it, change only the memory, yep they will buy it, change the power button, yep they will buy it. Apple relies on their fans not being sensible when it comes to buying their products.

I had ordered an IPP on the basis that, if they announced the one feature I really wanted (using external monitor as a real second screen), or other features many wished for, there would be lots of new orders going in. Delivery was already 23rd June and I didn't want to have to wait any longer than necessary.

Now cancelled and plans back in melting pot.

Should I get a cheaper iPad and a Mac Mini? Or a MacBook Air? Or wait for a MacBook Pro 14"? Or ...???

Well if you need a tablet then any ipad will work as they all do the same thing.

Pairing with a MACOS computer - do you need to be mobile? MacBook Air. If not the Mac Mini.

And as far as waiting for the MBP 14", do you need it now or can you wait?

Think about what you need to achieve, then pick your tools. Don't do what I do and procrastinate forever, getting caught in the waiting game for the next thing.
