We’re going back and forth over whether red is blue or not (it’s red). Apple spends a lot of money on their presentation, and they‘re very deliberate about what they do. They sent a message when they created that scene where they took an M1 chip out of a Mac and put it in an iPad and then chose to put together a presentation with how excited developers were about the M1.

They sent a message that many people picked up on. They did some very intentional stuff to suggest this was more than just a regular processor update.

Red is red and hype is hype.
iPad pro M1 is so new I am sure it won’t be long before apps are developed for it…

What were you expecting Apple to have done?

1) not update the iPad Pro

2) use a slower processor in the updated iPad Pro?

3) advertise the iPad Pro with a disclaimer that there are currently no new features that make use of such horsepower?

Or:

1) simply wait until wwdc announcement before deciding whether to buy an iPad Pro or not?

I really don’t see how Apple is being dishonest here.
I am not interested in rehashing the same arguments in circles until we both pass out.

My point was simply to agree with the earlier poster that the hype originated from Apple not the other way around. Disagreeing over why we are where we are is what it is. We are here now. But pretending Apple made no claims and everyone is gobsmacked that anyone thought they would do anything to utilize the M1 is just gas lighting people.

I don’t think Apple did anything dishonest with the M1 release either. Hype is part of the game with Apple…along with every other Mfg of product. Who would want a product release without a little hype? It would be boring, dry, flat! Who wants that. They hyped the 2020 iPad Pro last year and what did we actually get over the 2018 IPP then? More ram, lidar, wifi 6 support, a “tiny bit“ faster processor, more base storage. A nice spec bump……and an iPad capable of running pro app’s too I’d say. Many may not have been happy with Apple in 2020, but no one was claiming “foul” (lying, over-hyping, etc..).

What’s different about the 2021 IPP release? In a nutshell they gave the IPP enough of a spec bump to really lay the ground for the IPP being a solid platform for the future and for more fully taking advantage of it’s “pro” moniker!! Significant bumps in RAM and storage options, thunderbolt connector, front camera updates. Let’s see, what else?…oh yeah, something called the “M1” which is probably on par with what an updated A14X would have been anyway….along with a great display update for the 12.9 with mini LED:

Now, was the hype machine at Apple in overdrive? I guess you could say that…but aren’t they always?

So, what did we get in the end? The best iPad ever! All in all a fantastic spec update if nothing else…especially for the 12.9 model. And…an iPad that is poised to handle anything Apple decides to unleash at it (ie pro apps, dual monitor display updates, etc…). Now…why didn’t I buy it?? In a nutshell: I’m an 11 inch guy (no not that way;)….and the 11 inch still has that same old (yet fantastic) display it’s had for years. I’ve got the 2018 11 inch IPP and I think I can safely “limp” along for another year to see we get a display update on the 11. Then…I’m all in!

Go back and watch Timmy's Mission Impossible video where he literally lifts the M1 chip from an M1 MacBook and inserts it into an iPad Pro...yes, shame on me for reading ANYTHING into that. I made a sensible decision - I returned it...

Yup the take away was exactly that the same chip is now in yet another device without any other changes.

The fact of the matter is that a lot of people agree yeah, they definitely did hype it. Kind of an objective fact once you look at the presentation. Hype is hype.

It’s just marketing the few hardware changes that did happen. If that’s hype then so be it.

The argument here goes in circles like a spinning top.

Apple said little directly and hinted at a lot of things. Hence why the hype machine got ramped up so much. Tim doing his Mission Impossible skit was only one part of that. Disclosing RAM for the first time (and not retroactively disclosing it for other iPads on sale) was another. I think everyone thought that merging macOS and iPadOS was a less realistic idea, but people expected "Pro Apps" or something "Pro" to align with the heavy signaling Apple did regarding the M1 chip. Currently, Apple has offered nothing for these devices. They've offered so little that the M1 iPad is now considered a rather weak update like the 2020 iPad Pro

It ends with this tagline... This is on Apple's YouTube feed...

They also added Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 support which so far isn't actually capable of being fully utilized on iPadOS...

But sure... It was only idiots who somehow drew a Mac connection here...

I think your last sentence while rough is the lesson learned.

My iPad Pro 12.9 finally arrived. I haven’t opened it yet. I am sitting here debating on whether to keep it or not. I am leaning on taking it back unopened so I don’t tempt myself. Lol

My 2018 12.9 is still running great.

Finally was able to get rid of my 11" M1 iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard the day before the return period ended and place an order for a 16GB/512GB MacBook Air (with education discount/back-to-school AirPods deal and cheaper AppleCare+) yesterday.

Couldn’t stand going back to TID, especially on a iPad power button, no promotion, downgrade.
To each their own, I actually prefer TID, seriously hoping the iPhone 13 has the power button reader, it’s one of the reasons I’ve held onto my 8 for so long

Well, I just returned my iPad Pro 12.9 M1 today at the Apple Store. Going to stick with my 2018 iPad Pro for now. Funny enough, when I went to the Apple Store and told them I wanted to return it, the employee said, "Let me guess, iPad OS 15 didn't meet your expectations?"

He said he didn't blame me. He also talked about the 5GB RAM limitation so he was familiar with all the stuff we have been talking about on this thread. Since I never opened mine, I got to see the screens first hand in the store. The new screen really does look amazing. Perhaps I might pick it up again later in the year when there are more discounts. I saw Amazon already dropped it $100 so there is that.

I think most iPad Pro users learned long ago to not pin their hopes on any specific OS release. It never turns out well.

For the most part this will be true of any maker of any mature market device. Expecting OS releases 10+ years later to be seni-earth shattering is living in a fool’s paradise. While The M1 architectural change provides some differentiation, it isn’t M1 vs A is like analog versus digital.

IMHO the question/poll is a serious oddity. Those ordering an IPad who’d then cancel because of WWDC is likely a fractional speck of those who placed an order.

Sounds like an inside man on the Apple tip. Clearly many PROS did not get what they were looking for when Apple’s hype train crashed into WWDC. And that’s what return policies are for.

Professionals tend to buy devices they can use as tools. Not devices that some rumor kids believe might turn into a tool one day.

In other news, this is still the exact same across all Apple devices labelled Pro. Pro means slightly nicer specs, that’s it.

Yeah, as an owner of the original iPad Pro, and a 2020, I can safely say I HATE Face ID. I can’t unlock my iPad in its writing stand, or off to the side. I haven’t been able to unlock with it during Covid, wearing a mask. I still can’t unlock in a dark room. I’d say 60% if the time, I’m waiting for Face ID to fail, then typing my code in.

If your whole reason for buying the 2021 iPad was based on iOS 15, you probably shouldn’t be purchasing it to begin with.

This is a fair point, but I don't think the big disappointment going around with iPad OS after such a huge update to the hardware is unwarranted.

Im keeping My Ipad pro m1 12.9 “ its been 4 years since my last upgrade so the time was right and I have to say I love the new screen and it didnt take long to get use to the larger size and weight.

I was a bit disappointed that the IOS 15 update announcement did not bring more pro features but its fine the Ipad does its job for what I need it to do

You are falling for the marketing. They put a new iPad chip in the iPad that they also put in the Mac earlier. If you leave the idea to use the chip on other computers to the side, it’s just a spec bump on iPad, as per usual.

m1 and usb4 , people put too many things together that should have never went together.

will it get pro apps ? probably.
will it become full mac os ? highly doubt it.

Exactly. It was the first time the iPad was given the same processor as a MacBook Pro. I don't blame anyone that expected some type of paradigm shift in the next iPad OS.

I personally do not care one way or the other, although I was surprised the M1 didn't lead to something new for iPad.
