Ah ok, the wishful thinking department doesn’t stop me from enjoying my iPads as they are.
Not so much wishful thinking as many of those of us who were on the fence about, say, the air vs the pro, were looking for a reason to justify the extra pricing for the M1 etc and didnt get it.

I didn't quite get full alternative browser engines I'd hoped for but Apple did add support for Safari extensions and it looks like there are improvements in the Files app.
Are you still waiting for public beta to jump on iPadOS 15? And I’m curious what Safari extensions are you hoping to come to iPadOS?

On Firefox and Chrome, I use a couple of extensions for cashback and stuff. I believe there's a Safari version as well. Haven't really tried since I rarely use the MacBook.

But yes, I'm still waiting for public beta.

I’m “cancelling” my order that I was prepared to place today if they had taken more advantage of the M1 with today’s announcements. I’m happy with my 2018 iPP, and the M1 iPad still doesn’t offer enough compelling reasons for me to upgrade yet. If I could do all the current iPad things, plus situationally plug in and compile code, that would be amazing. I can still do that via VNC though.
Solid reasons with a reasoned voice. Thanks!

Any place but here or there....
I’m returning my 2nd M1 11”. Speakers are not good, and the usual heat (even worse on this M1 - it’s heating up as I type this ?) and Procreate hiccups for me. So back to the Air.

The speed means zilch when I’m having the same issues or worse.

I’m not sure I follow your reasoning. The hardware on iPad Pro has already been nice vs the air model and now a bit better even. Same as one iPhone. Pro at Apple means “slightly better specs” not different functionality.

"Pro" is a marketing term. A low end Kindle is a "pro" device if you use it - in your work, for example. But you are right, "Pro" at Apple is just the term for the top of the food chain.

They released a machine that’s basically a MacBook Air in a different form factor, with a significant price premium over other iPads, the thing a lot of us were waiting for was to see if iPadOS 15 took enough advantage of that hardware to make the price premium worth it. I think it depends on what you were looking for, if you’re upgrading from an older iPad Pro, just wanted a performance boost, and didn’t mind the price the pro is fine. If you were, like me, looking to buy a new iPad and were looking for reason to bump your spend up to get the pro over, say, the iPad Air I did end up picking up, they didn’t really announce enough. For the 11“ pro over the air you basically have to *really* want 120hz, for the 12.9” you have to really want the screen overall. For me it wasn’t worth it.

It’s this forum if you didn’t know draining battery and making iPads and iPhones hot.

Well, that’s 100% your fault. Apple at no point did any hype like that. Others may have speculated but if you brought into that speculation then more fool you for doing so.

I brought the 12.9 Pro based on exactly what I knew at the time. If Apple enhanced its power thru iPadOS updates later then that was a bonus.

Why do you feel the need to blame Apple for your failure to make a sensible decision?
Go back and watch Timmy's Mission Impossible video where he literally lifts the M1 chip from an M1 MacBook and inserts it into an iPad Pro...yes, shame on me for reading ANYTHING into that. I made a sensible decision - I returned it...

The fact of the matter is that a lot of people agree yeah, they definitely did hype it. Kind of an objective fact once you look at the presentation. Hype is hype.

Again, Apple promised nothing. You brought into hype. Your problem.

Big whoop on “replacing the M1”. Still means nothing because the iPad isn’t a MacBook.

Apple is responsible for the hype that was built up. They started it with that during the iPad Pro launch...

You can make the argument that ads are hype and cheap parlor tricks to generate it are par for the course, but those tactics are beneath a brand like Apple IMHO. Especially considering so much of their brand identity is being shaped by features that require trust, such as Privacy and Health.

No they didn’t. They said nothing. Least of all any mention of merging the project lines.

I know require you, under the rules of debate here at MacRumors, to substantiate your claim with hard evidence.

Show me ANYTHING Apple said with regards the iPad that promised anything before WWDC that showed any sort of expansion of the capabilities.

The argument here goes in circles like a spinning top.

Apple said little directly and hinted at a lot of things. Hence why the hype machine got ramped up so much. Tim doing his Mission Impossible skit was only one part of that. Disclosing RAM for the first time (and not retroactively disclosing it for other iPads on sale) was another. I think everyone thought that merging macOS and iPadOS was a less realistic idea, but people expected "Pro Apps" or something "Pro" to align with the heavy signaling Apple did regarding the M1 chip. Currently, Apple has offered nothing for these devices. They've offered so little that the M1 iPad is now considered a rather weak update like the 2020 iPad Pro

It ends with this tagline... This is on Apple's YouTube feed...

M1 Chip. The Power of Mac. Stolen for the iPad Pro.

They also added Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 support which so far isn't actually capable of being fully utilized on iPadOS...

But sure... It was only idiots who somehow drew a Mac connection here...

So, you agreed, they said nothing. The hype machine took what Apple didn’t say and you all put 2 + 2 together and got 17.

In fact, Apple did state in April there were absolutely no plans to merge the platforms. The hype machine seized upon that and decided Apple were trying to deceive everyone.

Everyone who wanted to believe the hype machine was left dissatisfied and now want to blame Apple.

Really? Not utilizing it? What is the speed of the internal storage? If it’s is around 1200 MBs then you will not see any faster transfer speeds from the ssd to an external storage drive…

You do realize there are other uses for thunderbolt than external drives, right?

What were you expecting Apple to have done?

1) not update the iPad Pro

2) use a slower processor in the updated iPad Pro?

3) advertise the iPad Pro with a disclaimer that there are currently no new features that make use of such horsepower?

Or:

1) simply wait until wwdc announcement before deciding whether to buy an iPad Pro or not?

I really don’t see how Apple is being dishonest here.

We’re going back and forth over whether red is blue or not (it’s red). Apple spends a lot of money on their presentation, and they‘re very deliberate about what they do. They sent a message when they created that scene where they took an M1 chip out of a Mac and put it in an iPad and then chose to put together a presentation with how excited developers were about the M1.

They sent a message that many people picked up on. They did some very intentional stuff to suggest this was more than just a regular processor update.

Red is red and hype is hype.
