Still happy with my 10,5" Pro. The 2020 let alone 2021 models wouldn't provide me (and most people) any considerable benefit, rather than making my wallet lighter. 16GB RAM on a tablet is both silly and overkill, even if iOS15 had brought some more features.

Yup, iPads/iPhones/Macs last for AGES. Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade (power for specific uses, new display tech) there’s a little reason to it (like FOMO).

Well if you need a tablet then any ipad will work as they all do the same thing.

Pairing with a MACOS computer - do you need to be mobile? Macbook Air. If not the Mac Mini.

And as far as waiting for the MBP 14", do you need now or can you wait?

Think about what you need to achieve, then pick your tool.
If I have to wait, I shall wait!

If budget were no issue at all, I'd probably get both 11" and 12.9" iPads Pro. And a Mac mini. And a MacBook - quite possibly the 14" MacBook Pro - if it arrives before my patience runs out. And an iPad mini when an updated one arrives! But my needs are not the subject of this thread! :) And, with finite budget, I am finding it difficult to commit to an iPad Air.

I find it sticks in the throat to pay almost as much for last year's model as this year's. Even if I end up overpaying!

Apple can make miniscule changes to the ipad and Apple fans will still purchase it. Change only the CPU, they buy it, change only the memory, yep they will buy it, change the power button, yep they will buy it. Apple relies on their fans not being sensible when it comes to buying their products.

At least they changed the CPU this time unlike in 2020.

Same thought I had, but what about the refurbished for 541€? This would be 325€ less than the M1...
In that case, I would go with the refurbished one. Is that an Apple refurb, which carries the same one-year warranty as a new one?

Other than being much faster, having double the RAM (model depending), having the XDR screen (12.9), having a 4/4 big/LITTLE architecture, 5G on the Cellular versions…

Yup - no features above a 2018 or 2020. None at all…

Thank you for delivering this wonderful “What have the Romans ever done for us” moment. Reminded me immediately of the life of Brian.

Wonder how many people voting have even ordered/received a new M1 iPad…
Had an M1 11 16gb/1tb/5g - returned Tuesday for an Air 4 256gb/LTE - if Apple doesn't think of the M1 any more seriously than they do an Air (or even plain iPad) why should I treat it as more than an accessory item? I know, I'll get flamed, but I did fall for the hype of "they must have something more in store" like the little boy who tore through a pile of horse manure, exclaiming "there has to be a pony in here somewhere" only to find out it was just more manure...

Well, that’s 100% your fault. Apple at no point did any hype like that. Others may have speculated but if you brought into that speculation then more fool you for doing so.

I brought the 12.9 Pro based on exactly what I knew at the time. If Apple enhanced its power thru iPadOS updates later then that was a bonus.

Why do you feel the need to blame Apple for your failure to make a sensible decision?

It seems the extra RAM is still under lock and key, so even if you bought it, it is not yours. Better to cancel it.
Were did you ever get that idea? It most certainly can use that memory. Just no single App can use more 5gb. I know I can get three memory hungry apps running that use a lot of memory and still keep running, so I believe the device can use the memory. Just not all for one app. I have apps that will close when making complex images so I know it is frustrating, but overall I can get a lot done.

Tbf, Apple create hype surrounding the M1 iPP... from Tim Cook thief-like video to introduce the M1 coming to the iPad. And the marketing plastered right on the first page of the iPad Pro including the M1 chip, if you don't think there wasn't any hype surrounding the iPad Pro at the time.. then perhaps, you just chose to ignore it.

Everybody wants to talk about oh the M1 chip was in the iPad first and they put it in the Mac. NO, the message Apple wanted to send was taking the chip out of the Mac and putting it in an iPad.

They literally had developers all "hyped" and talking about how excited they were for the M1 chip. So we are somehow crazy for expecting the M1 iPad to be able to do much more than the other iPad Pros?

Now we have "mind-blowing performance" on our $1,000+ Candy Crush interfaces!

I had waited until WWDC to decide, given the lack of use in iPadOS 15 from the M1 decided to grab an iPad air instead, not sure if that counts

Essentially the same decision. Some purchased before because they thought there would be a shortage.

Nothing dramatically new to the iPad world really. All Pro models before were rather powerful. The M1 is a rebranded iPad chip anyway, with some added functionality and performance, I doubt anyone has forgotten that since it launched less than a year ago.

Buy the M1 iPad Pro if you're coming from anything before 2018. If you have the 2018/2020 model I would wait until iPadOS gets a real upgrade. iPadOS 15 sucked all the fun out of the M1 iPads. It’s almost like a good news/bad news kind of thing.

What’s so bad in iOS 15 compared to the iOS 14 experience, other than the fact that is normal folks avoid beta stuff?

Probably just iPadOS 15 not being MacOS. :p

Mind, I do think Apple putting M1 + 8-16GB RAM does still point to future software improvements. Probably not to the extent people hope and may not be implemented as fast as some may want it but there will be changes.

I didn't quite get full alternative browser engines I'd hoped for but Apple did add support for Safari extensions and it looks like there are improvements in the Files app.
