Took 2 tries, but I am satisfied

Really bad stuck pixels on the first one, uneven back light, one dead pixel...a week later and I got my replacement computer with perfect display.

Coming from a 22" screen on a Mac Mini. It is dwarfed by the 24" iMac.

Runs great! Very satisfied now.

Very happy - got a refurb unit from Apple and it is soooooooo quiet compared to my old 2Ghz G5 iMac. Also the screen is fantastic compared to the 17" on the old iMac.

Only issue I have had is with the superdrive but I've mentioned that elsewhere and don't want to drone on about it!

All in all I'm very happy with my refurb 2Ghz iMac, 320 GB HD for £615 !! And delivery within 3 days of ordering (ordered 11pm Saturday night and it arrived Tuesday afternoon - very impressed)

A bargain really!!

Just got my new iMac 24" the other day, ran pixel check appears to have no dead pixels or backlight/gradient issues, I've fallen in love with it, I'm ashamed to admit my last computer was a 800Mhz eMac =[

The S/N is: YM8210F10KM

I don't know how to decipher the week or if that's useful at all.

called apple care about my screen today - i *should* be able to return my computer to the apple store even though it's past 2 weeks, because it's the same issue as the first one... i hope he's right... i really really really want one with a good screen... it's been strange for me to be totally hating on apple this past month because of this.

apparently he told me that people are often "finical" about their screens and take them back even if there is one dead pixel - which, if you ask me, is not EVEN something someone who just spent all that money on a computer should feel bad about doing... he also told me that apple *very recently* changed displays on the 24" iMac... just thought i'd throw that out there...

While I sympathize with your emotions on that issue, Apple, like many computer makers have very specific dead pixel policies. You can read about Apple's here. So again, buyer beware on this issue. As much as you are paying for your Mac, Apple is not guaranteeing you a perfect LCD pixel-wise.

he also told me that apple *very recently* changed displays on the 24" iMac... just thought i'd throw that out there...

Unless he considers August, 2007 as being "very recently" he's wrong because we've already confirmed numerous times in these forums that Apple is still using the same LG-Philips LM240WU2-SLB1 in the early-2008 revision iMacs. :p

I wish you the best of luck in getting a good replacement but do keep in mind that you could just as easily get one worse, especially considering how satisfied you seemed to be initially with your current one.

When I sent mine in last year for a very hard to detect smudge on the panel (it was so hard to detect I didn't notice it until 3 months went by) I was initially pissed because the panel I got back had a comparatively terrible gradient. Fortunately (I guess), that one had a bad backlight and needed replacing. The second replacement which I'm using now is a keeper. :D

i think the apple support agent was referring to what seems to very recent production panels - same LG Phillips, but without issues, as he suggested i ask for a recent production model from within the last few weeks (20-23 i guess). his suggestions correlates with with with others have been saying on these threads that their recently produced iMacs are flawless. i hope its true, because as accepting as i was initially with this replacement over the first one i had, i just can't seem to get over the color shift and bleed-out.

interestingly, he also said that apple has recently flat-out stopped using TN panels on the iMacs... would be nice to have confirmation... i wonder if anyone who has purchased a 20" iMac that was produced in the last few weeks has an 8-bit H-IPS screen like the 24" models? the apple site lists 20" iMacs as having 160º viewing angels, while 24" iMacs have 178º viewing angels - not sure if that has anything to do with the type of display or if those angels are based on screen size only...

any thoughts?

i just read on the other thread that you have no gradient... what about screen bleedout when the room is dark and the screen is all black? i'm assuming you also have a flawless post-20-week production model with a good screen.

Haven't checked this specifically (apart from testing a few solid color backgrounds), but didn't notice anything bad with the screen up to now...it's just gorgeous (and very bright indeed)!

Very satisfied with my 3ghz 24" Imac I got last Thursday. No stuck or dead pixels and no backlight bleed or colour issues with the screen and the machine just flys ! I love it.

After switching to mac from PC last year with my 17" MBP SR I have now moved my entire family and staff over to MAC and I couldn't be happier.

my 2nd week 10 production (M8810).

clockwise:

1. pale yellow screen (raw camera).
2. pale yellow screen contrast enhanced (auto) to show more clearly the subtle uneven color distribution (cold blue cast) on the left side of the screen.
3. black screen (auto), just incase you couldn't already see the display bleed out from the raw camera shot.
4. black screen (raw camera).

(just incase you're curious, the purple lights on top are the Wii Sensor Bar)

Yup. You have every right to complain. That is the worst backlight bleed I have ever seen.

I am very happy with my new iMac. This is the first Mac I have ever owned. I bought the 24" 3.06GHz. I was able to network it into our home network and copy files from my old PC to the new iMac.

It is taking me a little getting use to the key boardl

It is taking me a little getting use to the keyboard. The feel is simply not the same, but I am sure I will get use to it.

I bought a Bluetooth wireless mouse and love it.

I figured out how to sync Entourage with my iPhone.

My screen is good. I do not see any dead pixels.

I'd buy an iMac for my wife if they were not so expensive, so we will save and plan for the future.

Next purchase will be Final Cut and an external (fast) hard drive.

The reason I point out the week number and plant is for that reason......so people can ask for that plant and week as 2 units thousands apart are good.

i will defiantly be asking for VM820 when i goto the apple store next week, but i'm afraid they're going to give me the stink eye for asking...

will they really search in the back for a VM820 for me? or maybe they can quickly cross reference the SN with their inventory instead of have to search thru hundreds of boxes?

i was going to try change my schedule all around to be able to go back this week, but after i called them yesterday i found out that the "14 day return period" is from the very first purchase date only, and the 14 days doesn't start over again on exchanges. at first it freaked me out, but apparently they'll still exchange it for me since it's an ongoing problem, and i can go next week when i'm less busy. still sucks to have to rent a car to go all the way to Laval to return a product that shouldn't have these problems.

Wonderful

I just got my first iMac about a week ago.
It's taken me a while to get used to the big 24" screen. I had to adjust the mouse settings because just to move the cursor from one side of the screen to the other was causing me to scroll off the table.

So far it's wonderful.

Would have bought the 24" if I had known about the crappy 20" screen. I was at Best Buy yesterday looking at how good 24" is compared to the 20" sitting next to is. The 20" looks yellowish from the side and the 24" looks perfect.

looks can be deceiving, especially in well lit stores (like Best Buy or The Apple Store)

Very happy with my 2 week old 2008 refurbished 24", 2.8 iMac. Mac is still all new to me being my first ever Mac computer. But I am really liking it; so far so good!

very happy, never returning to pc market. (not pc bashing, just will never never never go back.)
Fault 1:
not a mac pro since I can't afford a mac pro,
fault 2:
it is not a imac 24

Noteworthy: when hooking my handycam to imovie, the imac was getting real hot (6 hour job) while encoding the video to a more usable format. Got a little nervous and put a fan next to it and went to bed. Today it still runs like a champ.
