I've got a 8 plus and my intention is to get a new X in September launch, because I find the 8 plus too big and heavy, so even though the note 9 is a very complete phone i just think it's too big, looking forward to the new X!

The 8 plus weighs 7.13 ounces, the X weighs 6.14 ounces. That is a one ounce difference. You can tell the difference? One ounce is too much to lift? Really?

The X is:

Height: 5.65 inches

Width: 2.79 inches

The 8 plus is:

Height: 6.24 inches

Width: 3.07 inches

That is a difference of .59 inches tall and .28 inches wide. Basically you put a case on the X and it is as big as the 8 plus... and weighs more.

I am not tempted.

But I'm waiting for the cash to get Google Pixel 2 XLs though, so that's why.

As far as iMessage…well everyone's different. In my case, I rarely send pictures and even when I do SMS is good enough. 90% of the people I deal with do not have iMessage and SMS is the standard. Thus there is no making anyone install anything because I don't have to.

So, for you, not having iMessage is an impediment, where for me it's simply not relevant.

What, you don’t like the notch on the Pixel 3 XLs

I've always been very impressed by the Note series. Anyone who says that they aren't really good devices is just kidding themselves. I mainly stick with iPhones out of familiarity to tell the truth, but if I was going to switch to Android, it would probably be for a Note.

Very few people in America use WhatsApp. It’s used in countries that tend to charge more for data from what I’ve seen.
It’s quite big in Europe but not for that reason as most contracts these days come with unlimited texting anyway. It’s just a messaging platform that has become hugely popular here due to word of mouth I’d say.

Note 9 may be a good phone if you like Andoid, bloatware and copycat products
As well as not caring about an ecosystem

Apple will beat Samsung in September

Yes but I have too many Apple products so it will just end up in a drawer like all the other Samsung phones I’ve tried over the last 3 years. It’s a great phone though. I’ll be getting the X plus. Hopefully it comes with pencil support and 512GB of storage as per the rumours.

I use it because it’s free to send media to non iPhones. If I use iMessage to send videos or pictures it’s 55p a message.

The Note 9 is a great looking device, and the one thing that really intrigues me is the S Pen. It has so much potential and it really does create so much more diversity using that tool on a larger display like the Note in terms of notetaking, editing, writing, etc. I am curious to see if Apple does offer Apple Pencil support for the 6.5 iPhone X this year, which if they do, is strictly intended to compete against the Note in that segment.

Wait until the new iPhones come out (especially the plus edition) and you see how bad the new A12 chip smokes the Note 9.
That sounded like a fanboy comment all day long. And what if it were better, would that automatically make the Note 9 performance (that's being praised by everyone) poor?

That’s the same reason I use it too. Nearly everyone I know uses an iPhone but a couple are on Android and group messaging gets expensive over SMS when pictures and video start getting shared. The last time I looked I had sent about 300 pictures via group chats! I do use Facebook messenger too from time to time but WhatsApp is much better IMO.

It cracks me up that these phones get tested on YouTube showing them opening apps and if one opens one 0.6 seconds faster than another, it’s ‘smoked it’ lol. In real world use nobody cares over how fast, fast is. The Note 9 looks an awesome piece of tech and even though I prefer iOS I can appreciate companies like Samsung pushing innovation to make all phones competitive.

Same here. I’ve got unlimited texts and more than enough data but for some reason MMS messages are still not included in your monthly allowance and get charged for so WhatsApp and Messenger are still essential apps.

Don’t really find this to be true.

The ecosystem is the best part of the iPhone.

Im sure prison life can be very accommodating.

I feel with time apps will make it posdible for other platforms to interact with the eco system. Until then if you want to try any other product other than Apple, you are excluded.

Ill give you an example. Sometimes I interview people over video. I use Apple products such as a MacBook, iPad, or iPhone to do the interviews. If the other person uses Apple we are fine. But if the other party does not (which many do not) we have to find a third party app we can both use and are signed up with to to do the interview. Lot of unnecessary steps. If Skype or Google could interact with Facetime or vice versa, it would be so much easier.

Don’t know anyone that would pay to go to prison. Consumers pay top dollar to use apples ecosystem.

And FaceTime is great, especially when everyone has an iPhone.

The note is a great phone but I dont see any point upgrading to the 9 from my 8. I do get a free annual upgrade in october so the option is there if i want it. Holding out for the pixel and iphone plus before i make my decision atleast.

After the latest round of T-Mobile security breaches, and the lack of signal here in Seattle (literally 3 miles from their HQ in Factoria) I figured it was time to try something new. Xfinity Mobile runs on Verizon and will switch to their hotspots automatically when in range. I had to get a new phone as my T-Mobile X won't work with their service. I really didn't want to wait until the end of September, soI ordered a Note 9 (ocean blue 128) just a few moments ago. 300.00 back for switching, and I will end up paying 12/month per gig (going to try this before switching to the unlimited tier). @Cryates mentioned in another thread Google Messages can be used as a (somewhat) workaround for the lack of iMessage. So why not give it a go?

Now I just have to move all of my documents from iCloud to Google Drive, since there is no files app on Android.

BTW: Does anyone know how to change the sidebar icons? Google Drive just shows up as a generic folder, whereas if you're using dropbox, it's a proper icon.

Just to quickly clarify for those who did not see my original post. Android Messages (Google's app) now supports messages on the web, which will work via Safari on Mac, and will allow for desktop notifications.

And this is exactly why it never gained a foothold here in the States. Unlimited texting (including MMS) has been ubiquitous for what feels like forever now. IIRC, WhatsApp wasn’t always free, was it? Considering most people here bitch and moan about spending even $1 on any app, they weren’t going to move to a third party platform, not matter how little it cost, when we already had free messaging to everyone, regardless of platform.

Apple Messages just further reinforced this behavior by adding so much additional functionality in the market with the highest iPhone market share. There is zero motivation to try to adopt anything else.

I love Apple Messages but also my regular contacts nearly all use iPhones. I’d love it if a third party solution (with encryption) was more widely adopted here, and especially one not owned by Facebook. :)

Family members with iPhones all downloaded WhatsApp when my husband and I switched to Note 8 and we have all been more than satisfied using it as it is feature-rich. Haven’t tried Signal or Google Messages because Whatsapp works so well for us. We use Textra for texting with other iMessage users as it doesn’t require anything on their end and it works well although it is not as feature-rich. Honestly, leaving iMessage was the reason I stayed with iPhone for so long and then found it to be not much of an issue at all when we made the jump. The versatility of Android vs. iOS more than makes up for losing iMessage for me. Two of our family members are in fact planning on switching to Samsung phones when their iPhones are paid off bc they like our phones better than theirs. Not to say that iPhones aren’t good phones with great support and not saying I would never switch back but Samsung/Android would have to really screw things up and Apple would have to offer some really compelling new hardware and iOS features. Right now I think Samsung and other Android offerings are just killing it when it comes to hardware and software features.

I would love to upgrade to Note 9 (upgrades look awesome) but I still owe a lot on my ATT Note 8 which works perfectly for me and I don’t want to spend $1k to upgrade. So I guess I will have to live vicariously through others.:)
