@tbayrgs MMS might be free in the US but the quality in my experience is awful, both on T-Mobile and AT&T. They compress images far too much.

That reason alone is why my friend switched to the iPhone. His wife was sending him videos of their son and the quality was getting smashed. With iMessage that doesn't happen.

I’d rather switch my messaging app than my phone. iMessage is great but I’d never let a messaging service dictate what phone I buy.

I guess it's easier to buy a new phone than convince your (now ex) wife to a different app just because of incompatibilities with MMS across systems. Especially when the offending items are memories of your kid.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. If one person won’t download an app that takes seconds, no way I’d go out and buy a phone to satisfy them.

A difference in video quality? Strange. I wonder if something has changed in the past year or so. The videos he received from hers were much better quality once he switched to the iPhone. Blame AT&T :)
No he doesn’t. I take my videos and pics on my iPhone and I have to send them to him via what’s app because he uses a note 8. I want him to switch to the iPhone.

I'm not disagreeing with you on the ease of getting another app. It was something he chose to do. But what I think the problem really is with how a standard like MMS isn't really "standard" across platforms sometimes.

Ah. Yeah, she was sending them via Messages on the iPhone to whatever message app he was using on his S8) i think at the time...so either Samsung messages, or whatever the other one is that is insanely popular. It wasn't google, but another 3rd party app... Textra. That's what it was.

I've been sending my wife videos from my Note 9 via Samsung's built-in link sharing. You can send up to 2GB per day. It texts her a link. She clicks on it, downloads the file and it's not compressed. It avoids the fiasco of the MMS being compressed by the network.

Oh, I don’t disagree but the overwhelming majority of general consumer didn’t/don’t notice or care. And when the Apple Messages came along, that problem was solved for a huge portion of smartphone users. The subsequent years of use have only reinforced iPhone users loyalty to Apple Messages.

Note 9 may be a good phone if you like Andoid, bloatware and copycat products
As well as not caring about an ecosystem

Apple will beat Samsung in September
*Android is good
*Bloatware is minimum now days
*Copycat? Who is Samsung copying? They kept the headphone jack and didn’t go to the notch.

If you are a huge iOS fanatic that doesn’t mean you have to hate android and look down on it. At the end of the day the note 9 is the most technology packed device ever made. Take it or leave it.

My wife has a 7 plus and I am using the P20 Pro. WhatsApp is a solution to sharing video and pics. Works great. It is what most the world uses as well. Many cannot afford iphones in developing countries. My wife is Brazilian and many of her friends back Brazil do not have iPhones due to the incredible cost for them. WhatsApp is what everyone uses.

MMS is very limited at the carrier level like 300kb. Imessage is limited too but somewhere around 220mb. Anyway, there are good solutions out there if someone is stuck with the imessage dilemma. But it does require being a bit open minded...

Absolutely 100% correct.

In 1997 Steve Jobs said this to his audience after they booed Bill Gates:
"…we have to let go of a few things here. We have to let go of this notion that for Apple to win, Microsoft has to lose. We have to embrace a notion that for Apple to win, Apple has to do a really good job."

Substitute Android for Microsoft and the same thing applies 21 years later.

This unthinking fanaticism do iOS supporters no favours.

The world is big enough for differences to be celebrated without partisanship.

I find it funny, and interesting to say the least, that some of these notoriously recognizable Apple praisers somehow find themselves in this forum and lurk silently until they see their opportunity to bash Android. Waiting in the shadows until this thread is made so they can say "Nope! Apple is superior!" and then check out. It's amusing.

Can't we just accept that both have their ups and downs and what works for you may not work for others?

Don’t know anyone that would pay to go to prison. Consumers pay top dollar to use apples ecosystem.

And FaceTime is great, especially when everyone has an iPhone.

I think consumers pay top dollar for Apple products period. FaceTime is just one of the features.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Apple products, but would love to try another phone. Unfortunately my family uses iPhones and they are mostly located in other states. So if I want to see them face to face I am stuck using Apple for now, or traveling a great distance to see them in person. All because of an eco system.

I disagree , the ecosystem is just as important as the product, it’s why I keep buying Apple products.

FaceTime is a feature Apple developed
You could use FaceTime on a Mac, iPad or iPod Touch, you don’t need an iPhone.

No one is forcing you to stay with the iPhone against your will...like in prison.

Over the year I had a business contact on android, so I used Skype and signal to communicate with them, FaceTime is a better technology. I never want to use signal or Skype again, it was frustrating, he has since switched to an iPhone.

So I I understand why your family refuses to use anything else.

Absolutely. I'm deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem but android has a lot of great phones. The note 9 is an absolute beast and if I could work out how to use two phones I'd get one.

Any old man/woman here in Europe knows how to install WhatsApp on their Phones and use it to do message/video/voice calls.

I really don't think Americans are lesser intelligent/capable beings than European citizens, so you could just tell them to install WhatsApp and make videocalls from your Android phone to contact them.

As an American, I think you're underestimating the pretentiousness of Americans.

It would be great if more people here entered into these conversations understanding that most of Apple’s base use their stuff and are loyal to it because *they like it*. All this nonsense about brainwashing and status symbols yada yada.

Have been on the fence for about a week.

Want to see what the bigger X offers.

That being said, I am thinking of adding an Android line to my plan to play with when new android devices come out to feed my need. I haven’t been this tempted in a couple years but this Note looks fantastic.

I think you guys are missing my point. I am not saying that I am forced to use Apple, and I am not saying that my family could not or would not use another App to communicate with me. I am just saying it would be nice if they didn't have to.

It would be great if Apple and Android devices were able to communicate natively without having to set up third party Apps. All the Apple lovers could stay in the eco system, but still communicate easily with people outside the eco system, and vise versa.
