Could be as simple as sending IMEI use data back to Samsung servers? I don't there's a precise way to know if it's a main device because everybody's use case is different, but I can see where they would know if you were using the phone consistently.
I did a little digging and it seems that there is an app you are required to download from Samsung to activate the device. Though from what I read, the s8 was the last model that they offered the program for.

There definitely is an app, it's the second part of the 'agreement'. User gets a discounted device (used to be free but no longer) and Samsung gets to pull usage data on what apps are used, location data, screen time, etc.. (by using the device insights app), etc.. I guess my point is the term 'main device' is subjective.. if they had a tech blogger as part of the insights program their main device probably only gets 30% of their overall device usage.. so I think as long as it is powered on and used on some regular basis you'll be fine. At least that's what i am banking on since they also fail to mention what happens if you breach the terms of the agreement.. I have read folks that had the S8 and folks that had the Note 8 program, I am not sure if it was done for the S9.

So I had a chance to look at the device in person at best buy and while I found it smooth despite having a load of apps in memory I was underwhelmed and found myself thinking "why should I get this"?

Yeah it was nice looking. Very slippery and bloated down, I counted 3 camera apps already on the thing. Microsoft wares.

How many different accounts would I need to take full advantage of the device?

My s7 edge I updated recently and it sucks, I get messages saying enhanced messaging features have been enable, every reboot. Samsung dm service checks device status at least once a day when I catch it. Lookout I finally force stopped after the recent update because the icon wouldn't clear my notification and the app was running in the background.

Then the system started to complain lookout was using battery. The system complains about everything almost.

Do I need an account or a log in to use the useless forced bloatware I don't want to use?

So yeah this pretty much turned me off of Samsung devices.

And this leaves me with a big question what to do next.

I’d check out oneplus. Camera and screen are behind Samsung, but most everything else is great!

Hmm, mine came with only the stock camera app.

I just use my G-Mail and Samsung accounts.

Sounds like you just need to tweak your notifications honestly. You can easily turn things like apps using battery notifications off.

Why not just disable, or (if the option is there) uninstall bloat apps?

I forgot about the pro debloat app for samsung devices. I even forgot what it was called, I think it was 2 bucks or something in the app store. It might give my s7e some extra life and spare me some bloat rage lol

As was mentioned above, I received my Note 9 yesterday and I only had one camera app, and zero bloat. The only non-stock app that it came with was an xfinity mobile app (used to monitor the account). Nothing else. I'd say that's pretty decent.

Musta been people randomly adding stuff to the device.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the device it looks solid but I think I'm a bit spoiled with stock(ish) android and root, even though my pixel kinda irks me at times too

Oh, I most certainly did this in my few trips to Best Buy and Target haha. Hey, you have to get a feel for how the phone will work for you. I had to connect to the Target wifi because they didn't even do it.

I just returned my Note 9. Awesome device, but too hard to leave iMessage and the integration between my iPhone X, iPad Pro, Apple Watch and AirPods. Once you try leaving those, you realize how well they all work.

Airpods actually work great on Android but I understand the struggle. Ecosystem can be difficult to change.

Any idea how to skip tracks? All I get is play/pause no matter how many times I tap them.

I believe the gesture setting is stored in the Airpods themselves. Pair to Apple MBP or other device, adjust setting, pair to Android and you should be good to go. There is also an app in the playstore called airbattery I believe to show you battery life.

This is what I'm currently debating. I'm real close to picking up a note 9. It's an awesome device. But I've got so much Apple stuff and it all works together pretty seamlessly it might be tough for me to make the switch.

I was the same way. AppleTV, Macbook Pro, 2x HomePods. I've honestly not noticed too much of a difference. I picked up one Google Mini to send directions to my phone, and just try out the rest. I'm pretty happy, even though the keyboard on the note takes some getting used to.

I'll pair them with my iPhone and try that. Thanks for the suggestion!

Don’t bother. Trust me. Just wait for the new iPhone X plus too.

I think all opinions on the Note 9 will change once the new iPhone X plus comes out and gives the Note real phablet competition

I prefer the Gboard over the stock Samsung keyboard. If you turn key outlines on with Gboard, it very closely resembles the iOS keyboard.

Can’t see it personally. It probably won’t suport the pencil (and even if it did, Apple won’t make a smaller one to fit inside an iPhone), won’t have expandable storage or any of the bells & whistles people like with their Note. It’s a bigger iPhone, that’s all.

I'll eat my S-Pen if Apple actually gives the XS+ any features that brings it close to Note terriotory when it comes to productivity. Can't see it happening. Expecting just a bigger X with landscape functionality and maybe split-screen apps. That's it.

And don't think for a second they were waiting on features that weren't ready yet. They were waiting to capitalize on a market of X owners who would want a bigger version the following year.

I'd grab one in an instant - small stylus iPhone X Plus. I'm done with Samsung though always curious what there doing, what S10+ and maybe Note 10.

Maybe apple had something on the drawing board but needed more time to solve it to be ready this year.

I had Note 8, don't care for that huge Apple Pencil, and Microsoft keeps trying but they fall short.

I think an Apple stylus is a possibility.

Been out of town, but received my Note 9 on the 24th, the day before I left town. Love it to death. Long battery life, great screen, it kills my iPhone X in every way possible.
