That's because we all hate iTunes!!!!

(in my case, that is true - I will do about anything to avoid having to use it)

100%. Couldn't be a less convenient and backwards way to do things, and there's too many other no-brainer ways to get content on the iPad without it becoming a slave to another device and piece of software. It's a computer, not an iPod from 2002.

I originally ordered the 512gb, as the iPad Pro is going to be my computer replacement. Then I got impatient and re-thought whether I really needed it. There was a 2 week wait on the 512, and plenty of 256's in Retail stores. I thought I have about 60gb of Music (which will not grow due to Apple Music), I have about 15GB of photos, using iCloud Photo Library. The rest is on iCloud. I stream video, not store it like my music. I think 512 would have been overkill for me, especially for $300 AUD extra.

If I fill up the 256 and have to start compromising on content, then I'll sell the 256 and make the switch.

I'm still debating between the 256GB and the 512GB, since i like to download my favourite TV shows to my iPad like the complete series of Game of Thrones, however they don't take up nearly as much as 512GB, but i suppose if i got the 512GB it would enable me to download more in the future and with IOS 11 coming and my intention to buy the Affinity Photo's app it could be better to have the storage and not need it.

Personally, I don't need anymore than 32GB on a tablet but went with 128 on my phones. I could never fill 512 on a tablet but appreciate others might want that option.

I had a similar situation. I actually can survive on a 16 GB iPhone if it was still available. And I barely Consume 32 GB of my current iPhone. But I also understand as software updates, Live photos/4K video, other media quickly consumes storage. Although, I would rather have additional memory, than not enough.

I'm going to have to pick one up - do you know if it lets you transfer into the Files app in iOS 11 - or are you limited to the Photos app?

I can work around it, but it would be great if I could control where they ended up.
I don't plan to update to iOS 11 until it goes gold, but I had the same question so I asked people who tried exactly that; unfortunately Files.app as of now only interacts with iCloud and various supported 3rd party services, both the SD and camera adaptors connection to a card or a USB thumb drive still only goes to Photos.app, and Files.app simply doesn't react at all. It is unclear if Apple will change/improve this since it is still in beta, but even enough that I can make do.

I actually even have an WD Passport Wireless Pro which communicates with iOS via ad hoc WiFi, it would be tremendously useful if Files.app can interact with it.

I went with 512GB it is a machine I’ll be using for work and don’t want to worry about managing storage space. I do a ton of podcast editing and work with raw audio files that get rather big and don’t want to worry about space.

I went with 512 because my 256 had yellow screen stains at the bottom 3 times... when I went to exchange the 3rd and 4th time all they had left was 512.

Not only that, but I believe higher memory is actually correlated with faster speeds (albeit margin increases... but if you ain’t first you’re last)

I'm afraid Apple wants to announce 1 TB storage like the last year for iPP 12.9 first generation with 256 GB, I don't want to sell my 512 GB in order to get 1 TB instead, It is not good to announce more storage sizes after the events.

I noticed that Files can claims to be able to use my installed "FileBrowser" app to access SMB shares, but isn't completely working at the moment. So it implies that as long as an app is written in a particular way, Files can access its functionality in a kind of plug-in way. Perhaps WD could write an app in this manner to accede your drive.

I went with the 512gb 10.5 and very happy.

I needed all the space to store my 4k drone videos and edit them, also holds all 235gb of my music and I can put tons of high quality movies on there.

Yes this still remains hopeful, venders with sufficient software capability can probably afford to optimize their apps for iOS11. But the question still remains if the limitations are inherit to the approach that Files.app specifically chose, which IIRC from the WWDC segment where Craig talked about the handshake and permission of individual file access is only invoked on a transfer basis. I am no software dev so I don't know exactly what that implies, but in practice this sounds like a full blown Finder-like file browser will not be possible, especially when an external storage device is present. I think Apple's bottom line is if giving full access to certain segment of the FS, even when sandbagged, would still be too easy for jailbreaking or privacy compromising then they simply won't do it.

I don’t think Apple will offer 1TB iPad until they release the next generation of iPad Pro. At that moment, iPad will have more storage space than an entry level MacBook.

It was last year after the event.

Yeah kinda feeling that but i think 1 and 2 TB iPad Pros will be announced in the future specially if Apple wants to add 4K Movies/TV Shows on iTunes and TV App.

Have you compared sync speeds between USB 2 and Wifi ac 866 Mbps? I have and Wifi sucks in that dept as well.
You will never get above 40 MBps wifi sync speed to transfer your data from PC to your iPad. Wifi limitations.
Not everyone has unmetered 100 Mbps bandwidth.

Filling up my 128 GB iPad pro 12.9" gen 1 was such a pain. There have been so many instances where I couldn't transfer stuff and had to cancel midway because of the pathetic USB and Wifi sync speeds.

Power to those who are adamant to not see my point. As the storage size grows, transfer protocols like USB 3 do matter. My point was made and I am simply getting a 256 GB model. I'm out!
Stop being so dramatic. I'll walk you through some math here.

USB 2 has a theoretical speed of 60 MBps. I'll play it safe and cut that in half for real world speeds.

30 MBps = 1.8 GB per minute = 108 GB per hour (no, I'm not dividing by 1.024 because Apple counts 512 GB as 512 billion bytes)

Because I don't know exactly how much storage iOS takes up, I'll give you the full 512 GB.

512 GB ÷ 108 GB/hour = 4.74 hours.

So assuming someone actually wanted to completely fill a 512 GB iPad by transferring files over USB 2, it would take them no more than 5 hours over USB 2, which could be started before you go to sleep at night and would be done by the time you woke up.

Nicely done!

@d5aqoëp - I'm off to sell my 1TB MacBook and get a 128GB one .... I won't be able to get all my stuff on the 128GB one, but at least my backups to USB 2 external disk will take less time :)

I did, although I admit I really only did it because that's the one that was going to arrive on release day, and the 256 was gonna be several weeks out. I didn't even have my 128 full, although I am excited about being able to just load this one up without a worry.

The real question (for me at least) is will we ever see anything close to 30 MBps in the real world???
