Somewhat surprisingly, to my mind, this depends on the actual watch, rather than the actual brand.

Some watches are loud timepieces, massive monstrosities, (and this 'look', rather regrettably, seems to be currently fashionable and considered desirable). These are watches which scream bling bling from the moment they grace your wrist. Others are more subdued, classic, elegant understated timepieces that nobody will recognise for what they are unless they are examined closely. It probably goes without saying that my strong preference is for the latter.

I totally agree with that sentiment. I hate the trend towards huge watches and have nothing over 42mm myself and only really like 36mm and 38mm to be honest. A grail watch for me would be something simple and tasteful like a JLC Master Control Ultra Thin or a Patek 5970. Timeless beautiful designs.

Agree completely.

Mine is an Omega Deville, a steel-backed watch, with a cream face, Dauphine hands, Arabic numerals on the 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 (rather than the more usual numerals where the four 'quadrants' (i.e. 3, 6, 9, 12) are, sweep seconds and a date function. It has an understated, subdued, classic appearance and is 33mm, a neat and elegant watch. As I dislike metal bands and love leather, I wear sun understated leather strap with it.

I had kept an eye on it for almost three years before I bought it, - as I couldn't justify buying it on a teacher's salary - and finally bought it a year after I started working abroad. I have to say that I get great pleasure from wearing it daily.

It's a Longines HydroConquest diving watch (automatic, 300m).

I have to applaud your eyesight. Thank you for enlightening me on this, much appreciated.

On a separate (but related) matter, I myself don't have an iPhone, and I have never used one. Indeed, I have never used a camera phone, and haven't the first idea of how to use one, though I can see some advantages to the things.

However, I am struck by the poor quality of many of the images uploaded here, when the picture in question has been taken by a camera phone (usually an iPhone). Quite often, they are poorly shot, with the main subject matter out of focus, and unclear.

Is this because iPhones don't take good pictures, or is it that people do not know how to compose, or focus them? Or is it that the whole process seems to have become so easy that people think it will turn out perfectly fine without any problems....

You are welcome. It is a very nice diver's watch. Longines watches are sophisticated and elegant. I remember my first Longines, it was so thin I could not beleive my eyes. Now it rests in the drawer.

I don't have the answer to your question, but my guess is that the most probable explanation is: "...the whole process seems to have become so easy that people think it will turn out perfectly fine without any problems..."

P.S.: I liked the pen as well. Being a colletor myself. Maybe we should open a thread for pens.

One of their better watches. Really like the look of it. Steinhart is often overlooked when it comes to quality for the price.

Yeah although this model (OVM) has recently received a facelift. It has a grey faded dial, the depth info has been updated to 300m and 'Ocean One' has been added under the Steinhart branding on the face. Personally I am so pleased I bought this one when I did because I think it knocks the socks off the new edition. I also think the secondhand price of this one has gone up too as a result because the reception of the new watch has been rather mixed. I love the look of it and the quality has really impressed me. :)

LOVE the look of these watches, but I'm always confused about how to view the brand. They arent knock-offs because they are well made, but essentially homages to Rolex and other brands. (also, less expensive with ETA movements)...

"Steinhart watches are manufactured in Switzerland and the final finish and the last quality control is done in Germany. Parts are sourced in Switzerland and in Asia. The watches do use authentic Unitas (un-assembled, modified ETA movement) and ETA movements and newly some Asian Claro 888 movements in their Ocean Divers."

Steinhart watches are considered to be a good value for money among collectors. They are well made and very reliable. Last but not least they are really made in Switzerland with (mainly) Swiss movement.

Yeah they are simply homage watches although there are designs by Steinhart too. The OVM is a homage of the Rolex 5517 Milsub issued to Royal Navy Officers in the early 1970's. The real surviving watches fetch anything up to £110k at auction so it's nice to have a homage to such a prestigious watch. Love it and yes it's very well made and excellent value for money with a hacking ETA Automatic movement. :)

Not sure what people will make of this. Haven't been wearing a watch for the last 12 months, opting for a Withings Pulse activity tracker that told the time at the press of a button and needed charging at least once a week. This steps things up a notch!

How do you like it? I was interested in this, but it's not available yet in the US
