My watch, Seiko Kinetic…

View attachment 742561

My dad's great-uncle's watch from 1882 that has finally been passed to me…Elgin Nat'l. Watch, 15-jewel. Attached now to a chain that's clipped to my belt loop and resides in the small pocket they make in your jeans (apparently that's what it's for).

I'm late to the party noticing this. It would appear that in addition to our love for PowerPc Macs, we also share a love for interesting watches.
Only yesterday I pulled out my Seiko Kinetic which I haven't worn for a least 14 years. A short time before that I had the charge capacitor changed, but it only kept a charge for about 18 months, so was put into hibernation. Photo follows:

My watchmaker confirmed he had spares in stock but said he didn't recommend having it done - unless I insisted - as it wouldn't be cost effective. So I took his advise and handed over another of my mechanical watches (a military Heuer Bund) for him to clean & re-lube.
I'd be interested to know how long you've had the Kinetic, and what servicing it's required. (I notice there's an interesting YouTube video on diy capacitor change for these Seikos).

That Elgin pocket watch of yours is a real beauty! Like some of our beloved Powerbooks - a definite keeper.
Here's one of my favourite pocket watches:

I am not, nor have I ever been a watch person in the sense of a collector.

However, over the years there have been several watch designs that have spoken to me. My Seiko, being one of those. If there is a watch out there that speaks to me and I can afford it I will get it.

I'd be interested to know how long you've had the Kinetic, and what servicing it's required.
When my wife and I were searching for wedding rings in 1997 the jeweler I had an account with had a sale on Seiko Kinetics which were popular at the time.

I chose this watch. Cost me $150 on sale. It's never been serviced, but it functions just fine. I pulled it out a few years ago (which is when I got the picture) but have been unable to wear it. When I got it I was working for United Parcel Service, weighed 110lbs and could toss my body weight from the ground to a package belt at chest height 1.5 feet away. I had to have links removed and the watch was still a little loose.

Now, of course, I'm 160+ lbs, have worked an office job for 18 years and struggle with the weight of 10 gallon water bottles. So trying to wear the watch meant some of the links bent and the pin holding the latch broke.

I just need to get it into a jeweler to fix it.

My dad showed me the watch in 1985 when I was 15. Told me that it would be passed to me one day. That day turned out to be Thanksgiving 2017.

I like it a lot, but far more interesting to me is the fact that it was used as a working time-piece by my dad's great uncle on the railroad. This man and his father were the first immigrants in our family to come over from Sweden.

The watch was passed to my grandfather, then to my dad and now to me. When my son is old enough it will be passed to him. It's engraved with the original owner's name and I intend to engrave it with the name of each subsequent owner when I can afford to do that.

The fact that it's well over a hundred years old and still works and keeps excellent time is a bonus!

PS. Your watches are VERY nice!

Okay guys after visiting several jewlery shops, an Omega boutique and ordering different aftermarket straps to look at i caved and got the original leather strap for my Seamaster 300. All other straps just did not do it justice, also i fell in love with the folding clasp it features.

I’ve got a white ceramic Apple watch in battery preserve mode right now. That’s a fairly dumb watch and looks ace.

Thanks for the kind words and your recommendation of Hirsch, however in the end i fell in love with the original strap although it guts me to pay this amount of money for the omega brand premium. On the other hand this watch will be a heritage object to my kids one day so why bother about some bucks plus or minus now.

Will post pics once it arrives, ETA is in 3 weeks!

I look forward to that.

When my Omega was serviced last year, (the crown had become broken), - and returned to me with a fresh two year guarantee, I was also offered a strap. Unfortunately, at the time, the cost of the servicing was more than enough; I decided to wait until funds were more ample before ordering an Omega strap to go with the fully serviced watch.
