Thinking of getting an Orient Mako in blue or black. Anybody else have an Orient watch or know about them?

The review seems good.

I own a couple of Orients and they're great watches. Nice quality for the price. I've got a black Mako myself and it's a really good daily beater - sporty and stylish.

I also own a Bambino and that is also a cracker of a watch. Albeit with a pretty noisy rotor.

Definitely go for the Mako. At that price point it's an absolute steal.

Orients are nice watches as they are the same company as Seiko but if you are considering the Mako also look at the Seiko SKX007. In my opinion it's a nicer watch and has a huge following worldwide. If you ever fancied trying out the world of modding, it also provides a great platform.

You can't go wrong with Orient or Seiko though, so it'll be down to whatever you like the look of best :)

+1 on the SKX007 as I have the 009, which is the same watch but with a Pepsi dial. It has a much bigger wrist presence compared to the Mako, which is something to bear in mind. A bit more expensive too.

This is the typical response from people who are new to watches.

People with high-end watches (higher than Rolex) appreciate Rolexes for being simple durable beater watches.

I wish one day I could reach a point where I can get a yachtmaster or BLNR as my beater.

Ben just casually snapping photos of the iwatch with his 40k PP :D

40k?

I think much more than that.
A new perpetual calendar from patek should cost 100k not 40.

How do watch bloggers have that kind of money for a watch? Write it off as a business expense?

He could have other sources of income.
This is a high end watch website.
You can't have people who can only afford casios reviewing 20-500k watches.

true but they probably also get review units and the possibility to buy them at cost.

This is true. Watch bloggers do get test/loaner pieces direct from the manufacturer to sample for their reviews. As far as buying those review units, I have no clue.

But it's quite possible that Clymer of Hodinkee owns that Patek outright. He could have been in the right place at the right time, got a good price on it such that he knows the value will increase and had enough saved up to buy it (and maybe he flipped watches in his collection to fund it).

I've met guys who flip watches constantly. They don't buy new, and are always looking for good used market deals to they point where they are essentially 'leasing' the watch for free to little cost. The hardcore guys will actually make a little money off each flip / transition between watches.

Yeah that's possible. You could actually profit from buying some Pateks although usually not adjusted for inflation.

I did very well on the last Patek I had, although it was a bit of an uphill battle to convince folks it truly was a Patek(mine was a private label for Tiffany, but had all the distinguishing features associated with Pateks made for Tiffany).

Wow that must have been a limited edition.

I've seen Tiffany Pateks at Tiffany's... Pretty cool.
Why did you sell yours?

At one time(around the turn of the century) Tiffany stocked a lot of Tiffany branded watches. Some were made by Patek, some by Tiffany's own factory in Switzerland, some by Agassiz, and plenty of others by other Swiss makers whose names have faded into history but were probably on par with Patek for quality.

The Pateks tend to have a couple of "hallmarks". One of them is the use of a separate cock(or potance, depending on the terminology you prefer) for the lower balance jewel. Another is the design of the keyless works-mine carried a patent number of Swiss patent assigned to Patek for a keyless works design that matched the one on the movement.

As for why I sold it-I don't collect Swiss watches, and the money I made from it let me buy something for my collection that was much more interesting to me and fit in better with my collection.

What do you collect if you don't mind me asking?
