So because someone can’t afford an xs/max, the prices are stupid?
The prices are stupid whether you can afford them or not. But the XS is stupid because it offers no tangible benefit over the XR. Yes the display has more pixels, but those pixels show less points (albeit more sharply).

XS = 375 x 812 points @3x
XR = 414 x 896 points @2x
Max = 414 x 896 points @3x

I would bet many people believe they will see more content on the Max then on any other iPhone, when in fact they see exactly the same as on the XR just bigger and $350 more expensive. To me those XS phones above $1000 are like the Mac Pro, yes technically they belong into the lineup, but I wouldn’t even consider buying one. The XR compares against the 8+ and wins hands down.

I don't plan to preorder it, not interested in new hardware from Apple this year except AW. But im bias, I need the watch for testing purposes for applications I develop.. anyway.. I want to see the XR screen and how it looks in real life. Then maybe I'll pick one of them up used later.

Genuinely curious as to why? I mean, on the larger displays we get from Apple (iPads, Macs, etc) the PPI is even lower.

You can hold/place those further away but the phones are held closer, hence you see the pixels (or lack thereof) especially on larger screens. Part of the reason i opted for the plus models, despite the added bulk, was because of this.

The general public wont notice but if you're used to 401 PPI or more, you will notice the downgrade...especially on text heavy sites

should be good, pretty much an XS Max at a better reduced price in terms relativity. Considering it can do portrait mode bokeh with a single lens... i'm sure they know what they are doing.

Not entirely sure yet, waiting for reviews. But probably yes, I'll be getting one. I really just wish it were iPhone Xs in terms of size. But I am having trouble justifying an extra $250 to make my phone a bit smaller.

I’m wondering if the single large XR size is intentional to drive upgrades to XS.

Considered it but it is too big. X/XS is the ideal size so I am a tad frustrated about the size of the xr as I was looking forward to an upgrade from my 6 at a lower price.

As a result, I am still deciding between the x and xs.

I think the single large “budget” size was intentional to drive profitable upgrades.

No! It’s intentional that they use the same 326ppi Retina resolution (@2x) as every iPhone 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 to display the same number of points exactly 414x896 as the XS Max shows in Super Retina resolution (@3x), the result of these two decisions are the physical dimensions of the iPhone XR display.

This way the XR has both backward compatibility with old apps as well as forward compatibility with new apps specifically designed to take advantage of the XS Max screen, especially those who use a split screen layout in landscape mode.

Ordering one for sure - black 128gb. For me, it's not the cost that swayed me towards the XR. I'm actually a fan of Apple's LCDs, I prefer my iPhone 7 screen to my wife's X. So the same screen with higher res (same PPI) on a 6.1" screen size is intriguing, I'm hopeful it'll bring the perfect balance for me of a large screen with one-handed usability. The projected battery life on the XR is very promising and 128GB storage is also the sweet spot for my usage which isn't even an option on the XS. Also, I never really liked using 3D touch on my 7, I'm interested in how haptic touch is implemented on the XR. I'm actually pretty excited about it getting one.

Depending on the sprint monthly payment I might "upgrade" 8+ to XR. I really like colorful things... and I think it may actually be a lower price per month than I'm currently paying.

They kind of remind me of the 5c’s (in theory, not in appearance), lower price point but no doubt they will be popular among people who don’t want to shell out a grand. I decided on the Max because I was eligible for an upgrade from my 8+ and I’ve wanted a phone like the X but in + size since last year.

I don’t get that, 326 ppi will look exactly as sharp on a 6.1” screen as on a 4.7”?

There's more glass to look at compared to the 4.7".

So it will be more apparent, especially if you're coming from any of the plus models.

This was mentioned during the hands on previews.

I'm planning on XR. Coming from a regular 6, it will be a massive upgrade. Cost is a factor, as is battery life. I do wish the bezels were thinner, but I recognize the reason. I will probably get it in black to minimize the effect. Can't wait!

Still torn between XR and XS. Waiting for XR reviews to come out and to check the size in the store. Definitely decided against used X due to the camera upgrade on this year‘s models.

As for the color, it will be white, black or blue.

There’s a lot more glass to look at on an 8 compared to a 4/4S, but I wouldn’t say the 8’s screen looks worse than the 4’s..?

The XR is going to sell very well. Apple knows it, which is exactly why they slated it to have its own highlighted launch in October. The key to the XR is consumers will see the new form factor and face ID in a multitude of colors. I think it’s priced adequately, but not necessarily competitively as maybe it could be, but I don’t believe its necessarily exorbitant in costs either. I generally don’t have any complaints about this new phone, even though I am preferable to the OLED experience in the 6.5 form factor.

My wife's iPhone 6S Plus is due for replacement. She likes the screen size, but is kind of tired of the physical phone body size, so the XR seems like a good fit for her. She also wants a red body this time around, which the OLED models don't offer.

Got an XS this past Friday, and experienced two days of headaches. Not metaphorical headaches, but actual nail in your head headaches due to that OLED panel.

So, I’m throwing in with the XR. Bummed about losing a gig of ram and the dual camera setup, but am excited about the great battery life.

Only thing that worries me about the XR is the size/footprint of the device. I’m not a big fan of phablet phones, and the XS hit the sweet spot for me in that it was only slightly larger than my 7. Not sure if a 6.1” device is going to be too big. I guess I’ll know in a month.

I'm having trouble making sense of this comment. Why would a larger screen ("more glass") look any different from a smaller screen, with the same pixel density? I'm probably missing something. ELI5 please

In other words: I understand why an 8+ might look sharper than the XR (due to the higher pixel density on the 8+). But I don't understand why the 8 would look any different compared to the XR (same ppi).
