Such as? Looking for some ideas as am very tempted to move away from Apple.
I develop for both iOS and Android so I have my share of phones in both platforms. If you want a similar experience to the iPhone then you need to go to the Galaxy line but they’re expensive.

Otherwise I do love One Plus phones and Pixel phones. You can find some really good phones from Chinese companies like Huawei but I don’t trust China so I haven’t bought one in a while.

Otherwise if you want to stay with apple their older models dropped in price and are a lot better than the XR.

Cool, thanks.

Presumably the latest galaxy? Or are there only incremental changes between the most recent ones?

I did look at the OnePlus but, as with the xr, it just looks massive which is so offputting.

The x range is the only option if I stay with iPhone as am on the 6 now so don’t really want to commit many hundreds of pounds to go to the 8 which is exactly the same other than being a tad faster.

Most specs on the newest galaxy phones are incremental changes except for the Enhanced 4x4 MIMO which boosts your signal and in some areas it gives you access to higher speeds. If you don’t care about it then you won’t miss much going to an older model.

Yes go with the XS, if you keep it for 2-3 years. The amoled screen is awesome and the metal body looks first class. The price difference seems to be large but if you divided by 3 years time, it isn’t. Smart phones are personal, its almost like our best friend. So might as well take the better one, the XS.

Galaxy 8 be a good option then? Remember I’m comparing to the iPhone 6 and not the x series.

My day-one iPhone SE is knackered now, so I’m personally going to give up (you broke me, Tim!) and buy an XR as ungainly as it is. Then upgrade to the mythical SE replacement if they ever release it. (XI mini?)

You probably won’t see an ‘iPhone SE mini’, and if there is, it wouldn’t be anything what it once was. Although, if you’re not interested in the XR, you can still find the SE discounted brand new, just not direct from Apple.

Is a 820p vs 1080 p really that noticeable on such a small device?

What we should be asking is if 326ppi vs 401ppi is noticeable.

Honestly besides a very niche set of users, including us on MR who chat about it and really understand the technical details, I’d say 99% of users wouldn’t understand it.

Yep good advice.

I definitely think the screen resolution thing is overblown. Sure, given my options, I imagine most everyone would take a higher resolution display, but it doesn't come free (performance and battery hits).

I tried the XS, could not deal with the headaches the OLED panel gave me, so I'm excited about getting back to an Apple LCD screen, in an iPhone X design no less.

More than anything else, I'm really looking forward to the increased battery life. That has always been my biggest issue with my phone, dying too early. Just hoping the phone isn't too big for my tastes.

If you think about it though the XR is the most anticipated iPhone this year and has got the most interest over the past few months. If they had have released it first, it would have deterred people from waiting for the more expensive models. Apple have structured the releases to maximise profits I would say.

I don't think Apple deliberately delayed iPhone X or XR.

Not many consumers are willing to pay 50% more for the Max compared to the XR.

When iPhone X was delayed to November 2017, Apple lost 2 months of sales. Apple sells 4-5 million units of iPhone X per month. It wouldn't make sense to delay anything.

I have to say - I've been using an X that I love, and am not planning to upgrade this year, but I'm thinking about considering the XR when it launches.

I absolutely love the stainless steel and OLED display on the X/XS/Max, but I've also always wanted a colourful iPhone. I still regret not going for the 5c when it was around as I loved the look and feel of that iPhone.

Couple things playing into my thoughts on potentially moving from the X to the XR:

-bigger screen & more real estate- the larger screen on the Max in person was awesome (mainly how information dense it was with increased screen real estate). Although the XR has a lower PPI than the Max, it'll have the same pixel resolution and UI so effectively will show the same UI on screen, though in a smaller package, and Apple's LCD displays have always been excellent in terms of accuracy and colour.

-Price - including sales tax (for me in Canada) the XR 128GB is $750 less than the XS Max 256GB. This is a significant factor for me.

-Would love to make use of the Smart HDR in the new camera (I know losing the telephoto lens would be a trade off and for me would take some getting used to)

-Colour! I've wanted a coloured iPhone for a long time.

Overall I'd basically be giving up the SS build and OLED display which I love. But in all honesty it'll be nearly November by the time the XR launches and I'm sure in less than a year I'd be looking at upgrading again.

I'm in the same situation with an X and am having the same thoughts about the XR!

Honestly the thought of getting something different than usual (like the top model) and having some fun with the colour really excites me. During the keynote I really wasn't expecting to see all the camera updates and Smart HDR come to the XR as well.

I’m kinda surprised they are launching the XR after the XS and XS Max.

I'm not surprised. Apple did this on purpose because the XR will likely outsell the Xs and Xs Max cause it's base price is $250 cheaper than the cheapest Xs base model.

People will know the XR isn't "old tech" like the iPhone 5C. People know XR will have the same A12 and same main back camera as the more expensive models. Most people won't care if it's missing the "blurry background" of the second camera in portrait mode. And Apple has put some software trick to enable this portrait mode on the XR.

So Apple didn't want to cannibalize the more profitable Xs and Xs Max sales.

Apple did the reverse last year, releasing the 8/plus model first but that was due to supply limits of the OLED display of the X.

I've had a 6s since they came out, wanted a "Plus" size but didn't want the overall size, and was very interested with the rumors of what became the X last year, only to become very disinterested when the price was announced. So the announcement of the XR this year has my interest again heightened.

I'll be fine with the LCD screen (no different than what I'm used to), and the price is in the ballpark of what I'm willing to pay. But the thing that often gets overlooked is the 128GB storage option for $799 (U.S.). That is the sweet spot for storage for me and doesn't add a premium as upgrading from 64GB to 256GB does. The 64GB XS is too little for me, and the 256GB XS is $1149. With my usage, I simply cannot justify that extra $350. The XS is a great phone, but I'm usually on my MBP or 10.5" IPP.

And, as has been said, the XR is not old tech. It may lack some bells and whistles that the XS and XS Max have, but it has what I want. Unless something changes, I'll be pre-ordering on October 19.

If that were true, Apple would simply raise the price of XR to $849.

It doesn't make sense for Apple to pull the timing lever when the XR is under priced.

Very true and in hindsight it’s hurting them this year over the next two months as those on the upgrade program are not yet at the one year point to upgrade. The manufacturing delays were a hell of a cock up really in that respect.

Apple did raise the price. The cheapest model was $699 last year. Now it’s $749

The display is the most expensive part of the iPhone. And the OLED is more expensive than the lcd.

The X was delayed due to supply last year. Or else it would have been released earlier.

The XR doesn’t have a supply issue. It’s cause they wanted people to buy the more expensive Xs/max.

Everyone's talking about the lame resolution of the XR, but on the Apple site they tout this as 'being the most advanced LCD ever'. Claiming it to be 'edge to edge', and a huge engineering challenge.
So what's all this about? Maybe it's not just about pixels (I haven't a clue here folks :D )
